If I could have an ancestor from Lancaster County, SC, to Thanksgiving dinner; I would invite Benjamin Castles. I would ask him who his parents were and where did they live. I would also ask about his daughters and who they married. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate hearing from you. It's hard to decide on just one person. My first preference would be my G-G-Grandfather Angus Rose Nicholson but since he never lived in Lancaster, then I would opt for my Great-Grandfather Captain John Newton Nicholson. He and his family lived in Lancaster during the 1880's and according to one newspaper article had a hotel there. His daughter Belle married John Reed Sr in Lancaster in 1883 and they continued to live in Lancaster. James Nicholson JNich57@aol.com
I'd pick Jane Hunter Horton, wife of William Starling Horton, for Thanksgiving dinner -- and of course I'd invite William as well. According to my grandmother, when Jane was only about 20 years old her baby was taken by one of Sherman's soldiers. She marched down to the Union Army's camp and insisted on seeing Sherman himself. The general promptly found and returned her infant to her. She was apparently regarded as a bit eccentric for maintaining that he really didn't seem like such a bad person. Besides potential enjoyment of her personality, of course I'd like to get the straight story on her Hunter and other ancestors. I'm reasonably sure that her father was James R. Hunter, but I've gotten two different versions of who her mother was, and no information that would really help with her maternal line. Ah well, the thrill of the hunt -- Lynn Teague Teague_L@bellsouth.net On Nov 23, 2004, at 10:12 AM, Carol C-H wrote: > u invite?
If I had a choice of someone with whom to share Thanksgiving dinner, it would be my great great grandmother, Caroline Bell Richardson. Her husband, William Richardson, was an overseer on the famous Patterson Plantation in SC which the Yankees burned during the Civil War. This little lady taught the slaves to read and write, and none of them left the plantation until after the destruction of the same. I would love to ask her what her maiden name was, and that would complete the genealogy for a long time. When I rec'd. the funeral plans for her from Elliott Funeral Home in Augusta, GA, her maiden name was written so poorly that we still don't know if it were Fann, Farris, or whatever. Two of my sisters and I had a marker placed on her unmarked 1908 grave, and that has been one of the happiest moments of my life. If any of you know anything about descendants of this family, it would be most appreciated for me to learn about it. Thank you. Lurlyne R. Wagner
Are any of you Smalls related to Selena Small Richardson who was married to my great uncle, Wylie Richardson, during the Civil War? She had either one or two children, and her husband was killed in the civil War. I would be interested in learning any information. Lurlyne Wagner
To: Kevin Small Kevin all of us Smalls would like to know where Thomas Small and his daddy came from. The B could be Bennie, because my great granddaddy, Joel Bennie Columbus Small was Joel's son. I do believe my choice would be Joel B. Small. My first question may just be, "what does the B. stand for?" Joel lived 70 plus years in Lancaster. I am sure he could open the door to explain where and why his father and grandfather made their way to Lancaster. I also would love to know where on the Blackmon prperty Joel was buried. The span of his life from the turn of the 19th century until after the civil war would provide much insight into the early days of the county. He like so many others worked hard and lived modestly. Their mark touched so many of us in so many ways the least of which is our very existance. Kevin Small Charleston, SC __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? If I could have one of my ancestors with me for Thanksgiving dinner I would choose my great-great grandfather, Samuel Rowell. He was born around 1800 and lived in Lancaster County in the 1850's and 1860's. I do not know when he arrived in Lancaster County but lived at the Wild Cat PO area. Samuel was married to Lavinia. Their son James H. (Harvey) was my great grandfather. He was born in SC; 11 May 1826. So we know the family was there at that time. I do not know what happend to Lavinia but Samuel married again to Molsey Plyler. They lived in Lancaster County for a few years before moving to Goose Creek, Union County, North Carolina. He and Molsey had another family: Joseph, John, Nancy, George and Julis. If anyone should know of Samuel's where abouts please invite him to dinner for me so we can talk about his life. I am anxious to know more about him and his family including his parents and siblings. Thank you, Sheryl Rowell -----Original Message----- Those of us in the USA will soon be celebrating Thanksgiving. Does anyone know anything about a John Helton listed in the 1850 census? He is the head of household, and is a 33 year old male. In his household is a 14 year old female, "L". This is the girlie I'm interested in <g>. (Darned census taker -- why didn't he write the whole name???) I'm looking for a Levena Helton, and so far, this is the only female "L" in the area I've found that would be the right age. My Levena married Cader Deason in 1854. If anyone knows anything about this family, I'd be eternally grateful. Right now I don't have enough to know whether I'm even on the right track or not! As some of you noticed, a list server that houses some of the RootsWeb lists had some problems for the past week or so, resulting in no list mail from the lists using that machine. This problem has now been corrected, and things should be back to normal. In the future, if you stop receiving mail from this list, there are five steps you can take to try to find out why. 1) TRY TO SEND A QUERY TO THE LIST ABOUT AN ANCESTOR. If you receive your query back through the list, that means that the list is working ok, but that people are just not posting. If your query does NOT get posted on the list, and/or you do not receive it, 2) GO TO PASSWORD CENTRAL to see if you are subscribed to the list - http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Enter your e-address in the box on that page and check the appropriate box to see which lists you are on. You will be sent an e-mail that will tell you all the lists to which you are currently subscribed. If you are subscribed, but not receiving mail, 3) GO TO ROOTSWEB HELPDESK http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/form1.html to see if there is any information in the yellow box on the left telling about a problem with a list server If there is no information in the yellow box on the left telling about a problem, 4) POST TO ME <cch@netdoor.com> and I will try to figure out what is wrong. Use my name - CAROL - as the subject, so I will be sure to notice it. If doing all of these things doesn't tell you why you are not receiving your mail, 5) ASK THE ROOTSWEB HELPDESK about it. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/form1.html - just fill in the form and submit it - someone will get back to you by e-mail.
