You mentioned the Failes and I am looking for a connection to my Sarah Arabella Baker who married a James E. Faile in approximately 1906, probably in Lancaster County, SC. I have not been able to determine which Faile family James E is from or whether or not they ever had any children. Do you happen to have any connection to or information on James E. Faile? (DOB approximately 1882), wife went by Sallie, per 1910 Waxhaw Township census, had his mother-in-law Caroline Baker, her son Benjamin F Baker and his son (my grandfather) Nathaniel E Baker living with them. That's pretty much what most of them along that line did----way back when I was first starting in this gen. search, I wondered why they moved so much....lol.... I've since found out they stayed & conditions changed. ----- Original Message ----- From: Louise Pettus To: SCLANCAS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2005 10:23 AM Subject: Re: [SCLANCAS] Re: Lancaster?? Historically, the final line delineating NC-SC boundaries north of the Old North Corner was not settled until 1813. That line was the eastern boundary of the Catawba Indian Land and, without going into massive detail, will say that generally from 1763 until 1813, the line was the Camden to Salisbury Road. But, the road kept shifting with a major shift coming in 1780 when Lord Cornwallis' troops tore it up. Some people living in the area shifted their allegiance from North to South Carolina, and vice versa, depending upon when the tax agent of one state or the other appeared. Court records were confused. One year a person might appear before the NC magistrate and the next year before the SC magistrate--if there was a magistrate at all--and north of 12 Mile Creek there was no court and no militia--no government at all until 1819 which was six years after the 1813 survey which drew a straight line on the map rather than trying to follow a shifting road.
