    1. [SCLANCAS-L] Andrew Jackson BAKER
    2. R W Hughes
    3. Looking for any information concerning my 3xg/g'father and his ancestry. Andrew Jackson BAKER was born 6 Mar 1825 in Flat Creek, Lancaster County, and died 9 May 1896 in White Bluff, Lancaster County. He married Lydia Jane BAKER [13 Aug 1836 - 30 Sep 1884], of the same area. This couple had four [4] known children; William Joseph [my direct line]; Margaret Luelza; Mary; and Lula Almetta. His parents were Joseph BAKER, date of birth unknown but died in 1838, and Margaret. Her maiden name is in some question as to whether it was TALBOT or NEISSEN. She lived from @1794 - after 1880, but before 1884. I would really appreciate hearing from any/everyone with any additional information on this family. 1. [SCLANCAS-L] David Johnson
    2. Dr. Gerald N. Johnson, P.E.
    3. I'm trying to locate where my ggggp David Johnson lived before 1807. He was in Christian County KY then and through 1810, in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri by 1812. The census for Lancaster County, SC shows a David Johns(t)on in 1790 and 1800, not in 1810. Can anyone tell me where that David Johnson lived, what church he belonged to, if he left any relations? He had two daughters and five sons according to his estate papers filed in 1823. My gggp Noble Johnson was born in 1796. In the 1850 census he said in NC, in the 1860 census he'd only aged 8 years and said he was born in SC. There are other families named in each census that appear to be related to families also found in Christian County and Cape Girardeau County later. These same families seem to have been reported in Augusta or Rockbridge County VA some years earlier. Some of the related names include Baker, Shephard, Graham, Frizzle, Widener... Gerald

    3. After the fall of Charleston in 1780, Francis Marion's Brigade, one hundred fifty tattered patriots, continued the effort. None received pay, food or even ammunition from the Continental Army. The only reward they sought was freedom from tyranny, freedom for America. With these untrained pioneer backwoodsmen, Francis Marion took from the British the Pee Dee section of South Carolina, fully one-third of the State, and, while they were making frantic efforts to capture him, held it against them for nearly a year before any other American force succeeded in holding an acre of territory in the State against them for a single day. Marion's brigade's labors in the Pee Dee country saved South Carolina and Georgia for Independence and the American Union. Although Marion received a Congressional citation for wisdom and bravery he was never accorded the honor his country owed him, and when the British evacuated Charleston he was not asked to participate in the celebration because he and his men were too ragged. But that ragged brigade who followed Francis Marion on the long, hard road to American independence earned its rightful plate in history. His services from 1780 to 1783 make the most dramatic and colorful chapter in American history. After the War Between the States, history was rewritten to minimize the contribution of the South to the American Revolution. again minimizing the contribution of The Swamp Fox. Starting in 1938, William Willis Boddie of Charleston distributed a booklet called "General Francis Marion's Men, A List of Twenty-five Hund", typed. He did not take out a copyright on the booklet. In 1949, Leonardo Andrea of Columbia, retyped the list and I have a copy. Neither Mr Boddie or Mr Andrea claims it is complete, only accurate as far as it can go. If you think your ancestory may have served in this glorious group with Generla Marion and Captain George King (my great great great great grandfather), I will be happy to check and see if he were included. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. R.W., I was looking at your email. I also have Knights that lived in Lancaster. They originally came from Chesterfield County, but moved to Lancaster. My ggfather was Alexander Knight married to Elizabeth Arminta Lowery. His father was Levi Knight. They lived in the Wild Cat area if I am not mistaken. Does this line up with anything you have? 3. One of my maternal blood lines was named STRATFORD, and resided around the Camden area beginning sometime back in the mid-1700s. Our emigrant ancestor was Richard STRATFORD [b. 18 Mar 1743 in Randwick, Standish, Gloucestershire, England - d. 17 Oct 1813 in Camden, Kershaw, SC]. He was married to a Barbara COLEMAN [no dates or ancestry available yet], and they had 9 children. Their eldest daughter, Ruth STRATFORD [b. 11 Feb 1771 - d. 2 Mar 1857] married John NELSON [b. @1761 in England and orphaned in VA - d. 21 May 1826 near Camden, Kershaw, SC] and they had 10 children. I am primarily concerned with any information as to what may have happened to the STRATFORD family, as they do not show up on any censuses that I have seen after the 1790 census. If Richard [my 5xg/g'father] did not die until 1813, why didn't he show up on the censuses for 1800 & 1810? I have also checked Lancaster County, to no avail. I do not have internet, and am basically housebound due to health problems. Any help or guidance with this would be greatly appreciated. I have also checked Lancaster County, to no avail. ================= Bill, Next time I am in the FHL would you like me to check the Accelerated Index file under Stratford and see if I can find your 5xg/grandfather? Don't know if you are familiar with this file or not but it is divided by groups of years and you look up the name and it gives EVERY (in your case) Stratford from EVERY state and county for that particular year or group of years.. It is an excellent source for tracking the elusive or nomadish ancestor. It also eliminates ordering films which will not have your ancestor on them. The microfiche gives: Name County State Household Number District/Ward/Township/or says No Twp Listed Type of census (Tax, Rents, etc.) Year of Census Be glad to look for you if you have not pursued that avenue. I am trying to find any information on Richard Bailey, born 1791 in Lancaster and moved to Hartwell, Ga. sometime in the early 1800's. His father was Kanady Bailey and I need proof that they were father and son. I have tried all that I know to do at this end, I think the information is there in Lancaster. So, any help would be greatly appreciated. Pat Sebastian, Fl.
