    1. [SCLANCAS] Flat Creek Baptist Church
    2. Discovered my connection to the Flat Creek Baptist Church tonight. Wondering if anyone has information on George Cook's parents or children. Married to Abigail Knight. Her parents were Andrew and Gincey(sp?). Believe George's mother was Mary Fail(e). George was a newspaper man and wrote a special paper on the founding of Flat Creek Baptist on July 4, 1776. Paper gave information on how the pastor came to the area, etc. Does anyone have information on this paper?

    1. [SCLANCAS] Richard Bailey
    2. Donald Maring
    3. The late Rex F Bailey, author of Baileys of Bute, gave me his outline as of 1994. He has Richard Bailey b 1789 in Lancaster Co, SC; died 1882 Hart Co, GA. Married Theny Champion, born ca 1800, daughter of Jacob Shadrach Champion who married Ann Martin. Richard moved from Lancaster County, SC to what is now Hart Co, GA (a part which was then still part of Franklin Co, GA). Richard's parents are given as Kannady Bailey [ca 1760, VA] who married 21 Feb 1786 in Granville Co, NC Ellender Short. Harris Rice was bondsman. The marriage was performed by Bennet Searcy. They were in Lancaster County, SC when their first child, Jonathan, was born in 1787. I do not know whether the Baileys of Bute has the proof for which you are looking. He begins the family with James Bailey [ca 1735, VA] who married a Fleming. He thought her parents were William and Winnie Fleming, but I disagree. One William Fleming married Winney _____. If I read my sources correctly, then William Fleming m: Winney had a son John and daughter Elizabeth who was b 1782 and m: Ezra Weathers in 1800 w Samuel Fleming security. That's too late. This William may have been the son of William and Abigail (Smith) Fleming. Westmoreland and Richmond Counties, VA, are on that peninsula known as the "Northern Neck", between the Potomac River and the Rappahannock River. There are frequent mentions of persons named Bailey (Baley, Baily, Bayly) very early in Westmoreland and neighboring counties, but very few Fleming records in Westmoreland. I believe that the Fleming family of interest resided first in what became Richmond Co, VA. Wills of John and William Fleming, however, were made in Westmoreland Co. They may have been sons of Alexander Flaming who married Sarah Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy (also Cannady). Rappahannock Co, VA, included what became counties on both sides of the Rappahannock River, including Richmond Co (1692). It is often referred to as "Old" Rapphannock Co because it no longer exists.) North Farnaham Parish church is in Richmond Co, and the Register (edited by G. H. S. King) is a valuable genealogical resource. One record which links the surnames from 1740 is in Westmoreland Co Orders 1739--1743): In the case of Thomas Pope vs. William Fleming, for assault and battery, Stephen Bailey Junior was a witness for the plaintiff; Stephen Bailey and William Bailey witnessed for the defendant. Each witnessed was to be paid 25 pounds of tobacco. William Fleming first failed to appear and finally pleaded guilty in March 1740. A 1767 William Fleming inventory (Westmoreland Co Inv. 5, page 12), ordered 28 April 1767, says Jeremiah Middleton, James Baley, and John Baley appraised. Estate included a dozen slaves and considerable property. (Wasn't there a Jeremiah Middleton Fleming?) An early Stephen Bailey is a likely candidate for the ancestor of your Baileys. Someone once was trying to trace him back to Gloucestershire, England; but it has been years since I looked at this stuff thoroughly and I cannot say more here. >From a 1730 Richmond Co, VA court case we learn that the Flemings may have lived at one time near the Job Hammond family from whom the Lancaster Co, SC Hammonds descend. Anyway, I wanted to use this as an excuse to tell Bailey and Fleming researchers that there is a mine of data in Westmoreland and Richmond Co, VA records. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. My dad passed on stories his grandfather had told him of going off to war as a 16 year old boy. I checked with SC Archives and they had no service record for John Samuel Brasington. I was lucky enough to encounter the muster and have built on it. I later came across a great newspaper article written by a member of the company published in 1892 which briefly overviews the company. I have pieced together some data on these last 4 SC regiments raised. The standard reference materials have nothing. I owe the time and effort to my SC heritage to make sure I save one small part. 2. Greenville is on I-85 in the "upstate" of SC. You probably do go to Lancaster this way from Pensacola. Furman is a few miles on the north side of Greenville. 3. You are right, it is N Fail . . my copy is poor! I must confess to another misinterpretation too . . . the Mt. Pisgah Chuch was apparently not at Flat Creek. The copy I have is in columns: Church Name, Pastor, Post Office, Clerk Post Office and then more data on the church like number of members, etc. Furman Univ. is in Greenville SC. I have no address or phone number but my library contacted them and took care of ordering the microfilm. You want to contact the Baptist Historical Collection at their library. Sorry I was not very clear.
