The SC ComIndex of the State Archives is indeed wonderful but there is one area of Lancaster County it does not work for (at least it doesn't work for anything before 1840) and that is Indian Land, the area north of Twelve Mile Creek. That was the Catawba Indian Land and although there were numerous settlers there, they held leases from the Indians and did not have state grants (the Catawba Indians had the grant, dated 1763, from the British, given at the end of the French and Indian Wars in gratitude for the Catawba's loyalty and military support). The amount of land was 144,000 acres or 15 miles square, most of it in York County but, as said above, the Indian Land (still called that) of Lancaster County is not on the comindex before 1840 Treaty of Nation Ford which allowed the white settlers to get a title. Louise, Thanks for information and story about the farmers. How wonderful and a great way to recycle the bags. I DO remember pillow cases my mother had made from flour sacks. Wish I still had some of them! Sue __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com

An addendum to my recent HAGINS posting - I am trying to prove/disprove that the following Hagins people were possible siblings from Lancaster Co. All (except Margaret HAGINS who married Jesse CRAIG) were in Harris Co. GA (ca. 1840 and later) living near each other and their families seemed to be intertwined in numerous ways. Sarah 'Sally" HAGINS (b. ca 1793 in SC) married Samuel HUEY (s/o Hercules HUEY and Isabella SMITH) from Lancaster Co. Samuel and Sarah were in Harris Co. GA by 1832. Samuel died Jan 1845 in Harris Co. Their known children: James H. (b. ca.1833); Margaret (b. 1834-36); Sarah (b. ca.1835); Martha J. (b. ca.1828) and married Baswell BANKSTON (my 2g-gp); other possible children include: Elizabeth (m. FORSYTH), Margaret (m. Alexander TEEL), Margarett J. (married Michael HILLER), Mary Ann (married Benj. VARDAMEN), Mary (married Young BA WRIGHT) and Nancy (married Nero WATSON. Mary HAGINS (b. ca.1788 SC, died 1863 Harris Co) married Abel NELSON (b. ca.1786 SC, died 1870 Harris Co.) Jane HAGINS (b. ca.1800 SC died 1875 Harris Co.) married John NELSON (b. ca.1784 SC died 1829 Harris Co). Know child: William NELSON (b 1829 GA). John NELSON was guardian of James MORGAN (b. 1835) and Robert MORGAN (b. 1836). Joseph HAGINS (b. 1780-90 SC, died 1850 GA) married Nancy Ann ????. Joseph and Nancy Ann arrived in Harris Co. from SC 1834. Known children: Robert D., James, Nancy Turvey and Benjamin D. Robert D. married Ann Clay VARDAMAN. Margaret HAGINS (b. ca.1791 Lancaster Co.) married Jesse CRAIG. I appreciate any help that can be provided. Many thanks, Adrienne in California
I see that you are doing SCOTTs in Lancaster/ Kershaw counties. My husband was born and raised there. His father was Wakeford Scott and his mother was Edna Faile Scott. Both are buried a Buffalo cemetery. Earliest know ancestor is Hosea Scott who was born about 1811 died in about 1890. Hello Laurel: Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have a feeling that Margaret MAY be one of MY Hagins family but I am trying to prove it. I will post the other possible siblings as soon as I can amass the data I have. My filing system is also used as the floor in my "office" so I know what you mean. Adrienne Hi Adrienne, I have a Margaret HAGINS, b. 1791 in Lancaster Co. Daughter of James HAGINS. She married 1) Jesse(e) CRAIG b. 1791, d. 1836 2) Josiah THOMPSON . She died in 1898 in Lancaster Co. I have bits and pieces of Hagins info, but not a lot. I'll look for it. (not a good sign for my filing technique) Laurel Burns

Sue, Maybe someone out there has some old Lancaster directories that would help. I can't swear to it but I think they were selling animal feed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. My father had a country store that sold feed and I believe this was one of the brands at that time. Some of the feed companies sold their feed in print cloth bags with no advertising on the bag itself but a paper tag attached where the bag was sewn gave the name, weight, type of feed, ingredients, etc. printed on the card. Housewives insisted their husbands get the cloth bags. I can remember men reaching in their overall pockets for a scrap of this cloth and wanting to match it so their wives would have enough for a dress. thanks so much for the input. Live in Dallas and appreciate any information from that area of the country.Looking for the Brown family that lived around the McCullough, Cunningham, Harper, etc and the Kennedy around the 12 mile creek and Mill stone creek area. May have come form Augusta Co, via Rowan Co to Lancaster Co. area about 1760. Some went to Sullivan, Hawkins and Knox Co. Tenn by 1790.
