You will want to check with the Fort Worth Archives and make sure that they have no damage. There was a tornado this evening. I'm planning a trip to the Fort Worth archives branch and since it's the first time I'll venture there, I'm dropping a note to ask for advice :) from anyone who has made that trip before, and also to offer to look specific things up for anyone who might need census or other records. I'm pondering offering to transcribe one of the lancaster county censuses but I need to read more on that first. Anyway I can't do a ton of extra research but if you've got, say, a specific page or two of a specific census you'd like a copy of, I'd be happy to copy it and mail it to you. Fort Worth is the Southwest regional archive, so there's no South Carolina county/state specific information there that I'm aware of -- I'll be receiving a packet of information in a few days -- but there ought to be a copy of each census and some military records, etc. www.nara.gov has lists of the things available at the different regional archives, for newcomers. I wonder if my boss has ever had someone ask for a day off to go to the library :P Stephanie
Hi list, I goofed by not reading the fine print closely enough in both my mother's files and in 'Descendants of John CRAIG, Esquire and John Robinson, Senior, Scotch-Irish Immigrants to Lancaster Co., South Carolina' by Eloise Craig. There apparently isn't yet documented proof that Alexander CRAIG (married a HUEY) and Margaret CRAIG (married a different HUEY) were siblings of Jesse CRAIG. This apparently is a topic of some researchers associated with the CRAIG list. Sorry. I'll be slower on the finger next time. I just wanted to correct the archive. Is there anyone on the list who is knowledgeable about colonial land grants in SC? I have a couple of specific questions I'd like to ask. Thank you. Phyllis Phyllis Rickard Adrian, MI [email protected]
Thanks Carolyn, I must add to the injunction to see the Perry Belle Hough collectionto also see the Viola Floyd collection (not on the internet, you have to go to the library in person but it is worth going for). Hi Adrienne, I haven't forgotten you. Taxes have come between us (and will again). At least two of the siblings of Jesse CRAIG (who married Margaret HAGINS) married HUEYs. Alexander CRAIG, b. 1781, m. Agnes HUEY 9 March 1804 Mechlenburg, NC Margaret CRAIG, b. 1779?, m. John HUEY, 4 March 1804, Mechlenburg, NC The marriage dates look a little suspicious. I have some info out of books I'm organizing to send you. I have no direct evidence about parents and children, but it's interesting. Laurel

If you do any research at the Lancaster Library, by all means ask to see the Hough Collection and the H.Parker-Jones Collection. Here is the Lancaster Library catalog site. They are on line: http://www.sciway.net/lib/lancasterlib.html. Louise P. sent this to me. Got to toot your horn Louise. Carolyn

Does anyone from the list actually live in Lancaster?...and does Lancaster have a genealogists group that meets in Lancaster? if so, when and where?
Thank you! for the URL! I had done a search and got lots of results, but not this. At least it's possible to purchase rolls of microfilm. Thank you! Not sure if the question has been answered since I was unsubscribed for five days..but if you go to the url below: The Lancaster County Library Address:http://members.tripod.com/~lancaster_co_library/Main_library.htm ....you will find their hours listed and other links to their e-mail address, etc. Was there on Friday, the folks are very helpful, lots of information regarding the area. Good luck, David T. Sutton Hendersonville, N.C. [email protected]
Here is a fantasyland if you think your Lancaster Co. ancestors came from Virginia. www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm This is the Library of Virginia digital program. It has land records digitized in original form which can be read on screen or downloaded. When you get to the site page down and click on land records. Then select the land records by area. A list of surnames will come up. These names are NOT the only ones there, they are just starting points. So if yours is not there go to closest name and start from there. Also if you are new to genealogy on internet be sure to check out www.rootsweb.com/~sclancas/boards.htm includes query board and places for posting of will, Bibles, etc. www.genforum.genealogy.com/ has county and surname boards --- Laura Lee Scott <[email protected]> wrote: > I am afraid you are in fantsyland, but sometimes dreams > come > true, > we could all email them to put it online :D > Check this site: > http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/mfmpubs.htm#com > > Phyllis Rickard wrote: > > > > I suppose I'm in fantasyland to hope that some portion > of this might be > > online? > > > > Phyllis > > > > At 08:42 PM 3/25/00 -0500, you wrote: > > >The SC ComIndex of the State Archives is indeed > wonderful but there > > >is one area of Lancaster County it does not work for > (at least it > > >doesn't work for anything before 1840) and that is > Indian Land, the > > >area north of Twelve Mile Creek. Laura... When are you going again? If I can get all the loose ends here at home taken care of before Fri AM, we will be going this weekend, so I hope we can find the hours before Thurs.night. My Scotts begin in 1812 (birth year of Sarah Elizabeth Scott), then go back from there. I have someone sending me a lot of SCOTT data, and will be able to search it for other lines (I don't think it will be mine).
