Viola Caston Floyd did as much for the study of family as anyone, more in my opinion because she published her work for others to use. An offer to anyone who owns or has access to the Viola's Jarper, Caston, and/or Floyd-Ervin Familyt Histories, if you get it to me, I will scan it to CD ROM and return your book to you. There's a bookseller in Lancaster that specializes in books of local historical and genealogical significance. It's Lindsay's Books, owned by Lindsay Pettus. (The brother of our own Louise Pettus -- an incredible treasure for folks researching around Lancaster <g>.) I'm afraid I've misplaced the address and phone number, but maybe Louise could provide it? Are you still on the list, Louise? I don't know if he carries this particular book, but he's had quite a selection in the past. This is again in the thread of Massey exchanges. #1: Eleonore Crespo was sharp enough to pick up an error in an earlier post. I put 28 August 1865 as the marriage date of Andrew and Hannah Jane (Horton) Johnson rather than their daughter Caroline Johnson to William A Biggart. #2: On May 26, 1838 Ezekiah Massey mortgaged to John Vanlandingham 150 acres on both sides of the north prong of Crooked Creek, bounded on the north by lands of the estate of Miss McCardell and William Johnson, on the west by lands of William Johnson, on the south by the south prong of Crooked Creek, on the east by lands of Andrew McIlwaine and the estate of Nancy McCardell. Witnesses: John Isom and Jo. T. Copeland. Proved by John Isom July 21, 1838 before L. Fleming. (Deeds N, 263) This would have been Ezekiah (or Hezekiah) Massey. This land would have been near where Henry Vanlandingham Massey and Mary (Johnson) Massey later resided. Crooked Creek was a branch of Camp Creek. H V Massey was probably the son of Ezekiah. Why was he given the middle name "Vanlandingham"? As I said, I am not kin. But I have made miscellaneous notes on families who lived in the "Lower" Camp Creek and Dry Creek areas where some of my ancestors lived. On 1850 census, he was #192b, Massey, E 60 M. --- ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

First, let me apologize to those of you who will see this message more than once. I am cross-posting to several SC lists. We have just finished updating my webpage and would invite y'all to stop by 'n check it out. This is amother in the thread of Massey exchanges. In response to several e-mails I have received, the Masseys are not my kin, and I regret I have no more to share. Way back when I began looking for my Johnson ancestors, I went through the court and land records of Lancaster County, South Carolina and wrote down lots of odds and ends I thought might tie in. The Horton-Johnson connections, of which there are several, led me to jot down the record I posted on John and Sarah Massey. Michael Horton, made a will dated 1855, with codicil 1860, and proved 186?. His parents were William and Elizabeth Horton. He married Susannah Massey, daughter of John and Sarah Massey, of Chesterfield District. Their daughter Ann (Hannah) Jane Horton [1823--1911] was married 28 August 1865 to Andrew Johnson [Ca 1818--1898] who was named executor of Horton's will. Several of this family were buried at West Side Cemetery, Lancaster, SC. Mainly from census records, but also from some better sources, I find names of 11 children. Those about whom I know anything at all are: Placetta Caroline Johnson [Ca 1840/41] m: William Alexander Biggart [Ca 1828] (his 2nd wife); Michael H Johnson [July 1853] m: Doria Brasington [Nov 1863--191x]; Mary Jane [30 Nov 1861--4 Nov 1935] m: 4 Jan 1883 William Thurlow Gregory [20 May 1853--11 Nov 1939]. Because several people have asked, my Johnson ancestors were on Camp Creek near the Catawba River. My William Johnson was probably a brother to James F Johnson (married Nancy Marlow) and to John M Johnson (married Mary Marlow). These last two married sisters, daughter of William Marlow Senior. I was informed that John M Johnson's daughter married Henry V Massey. I find now that I copied from somewhere "VanLandingham" as Henry's middle name. Sue Brooks Will you please repeat the directions for locating the old SC District Records? You posted that information in the 1850 Census message about the Massey family. RE: Sue Brooks's request for any ID of 1850 census Masseys, etc. Just in case someone does have an answer, here are some clues and a question. There was an Ezekiah (or Hezekiah) Massey a few miles southwest of Lancaster in the Camp Creek area. In 1826, Samuel Hammond petitioned for the distribution of the estate of Sherod Sims, Senior. The land was purchased by Hugh McCrory and was bounded by lands of William Johnston, Richard Buckaloo, James Parks, Daniel Hargroves, Hezekiah Massey, James King, and others. In 1838, E. Massey sold to John Vanlandingham 150 acres on Crooked Creek bounded by lands of William Johnson on the north and west. On 13 Sept 1852, Ezekiah (and Margaret) Massey sold to John D. McCardell 150 acres on Crooked Creek. William Johnson's brother, John M. Johnson, was the husband of Mary (Marlow) and had children Jane and Andrew. John M. Johnson apparently lived on Camp Creek in Lancaster Co, SC until the early 1840s. Jane (44) was in Henry V Massey's household in 1850, and Andrew was a neighbor. On 15 July 1845, Mary Johnson, widow, deeded her real and personal estate to Henry V. Massey, for "natural love and affection", including 200 acres on Camp Creek bounded by lands of Robert Douglas on the north, George Perry on the east, J. Carter on the south and southwest (formerly Andrew McIlwain's), and Hunter's land on the northwest. In return, H. V. Massey promised to provide food, clothing, and shelter for Mary Johnson and to assume responsibility for her debts, including those arising from the execution of her late husband's will. Witnesses were Andrew Johnson and John J. Sims. In 1850, the census entry after the houehold of H. V. Massey, 35, Wagon Maker, where Jane Johnston (44) was residing, was that of A. W. Johnston, 43 (Male) and J. 23 (Female). That would be Andrew. So: What was the connection between Mary (Marlow) Johnson and Henry V Massey? In George Miller's will (He was born 1777, Lancaster d. 1851 Lancaster, SC and married to Katherine Terrell b. 1789 died 1877 Lancaster, SC) he mentions daughter Mary MASSEY (according to birth date she would have been about 24 in 1850) among his children. Because he had property on both sides of Lynches River his daughter could have married into Lancaster or Chesterfield MASSEY family. I would like to identify her spouse. The following are all the MASSEY names I can locate on the 1850 Lancaster and Chesterfield Census not just the ones who could be Mary Miller Massey. Hopefully other MASSEY researchers have input/comments on some of these.
