    2. Don't know how much help this is: John T. Copeland, 1819-1897, with William Jackson Stogner, (my 5th gr-gdfa), loaned Dudley Haile money on a tract of land in 1872, Lancaster. John T. Copeland also witnessed a document for William Stogner's daughter, Mary, in 1872, Lancaster. Now, William's daughter, Christina Jane Stogner, married James Granderson Rowell. After Christina died, James second married Addie Copeland. That was her married name, as she had a son, John Copeland, who died in Mecklenburg Co., NC from auto injuries in 1946. We have been trying to find the husband of Addie Copeland, John's father, to no avail. If you find more on the Copeland family, please let me know. Thanks.

Posted on: Lancaster County, SC Query Forum Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Lancaster?read=1224 Surname: COPELAND, MAHAFFY, MCCOY, WEST ------------------------- I am trying to find siblings of my grandfather, Thomas Ripley COPELAND Jr. (b. 1882- d. 1936) The 1880 Census for Buffalo Twnsp, Kershaw Co, SC indicates the following: Copeland, R.T., age 34 J.A., wife, age 35 L.L., son, age 9 E.J., son, age 7 (I know this is John E.) A.J., dau, age 5 S.M., dau, age 3 J.S., dau, age 1 (name Lizzie I think) The census taker used initials only and appears to have listed them backward from what one would expect. My gr grandfather was Thomas Ripley COPELAND and his wife ArJane BRANNON. I spoke with Harold Copeland of Bethune and he remembers my great aunts marrying WEST, MAHAFFY, and MCCOY. My grandfather and a twin sister, Arjane, were born in 1882. Arjane married Jess Horton. My grandfather later moved to Lancaster Co., so may his siblings. Any assistance greatly appreciated. Fred Hudson COPELAND, Jr.

    2. Tracey, This is what the 1850 Census has for your John Montgomery's. page 164 h/h 486 fam. 486 John Mongomery, 30M Labourer South Carolina ( the last name is missing the T) 3 L. Montgomery 30F, " " can't read or write (?) Montgomery 11F " " M Montgomery 9F " " (?) Montgomery 6F " " B. Montgomery 3M " " M.A. Montgomery 3/12M " " I think the (?) could be a fancy A, but I am not sure. page 184 h/h 872 fam 872 John A. Montgomery 40M Farmer $6,000 South Carolina M.C. Montgomery 35F " " R.D. Montgomery 11M " " E. Usery 30F " " next household 873 is a Mrs. S. Montgomery 60F South Carolina. I hope this helped. Unfortunately this census doesn't include a lot of first names, only initials and they are hard to make out. Valleri Kelley

    1. [SCLANCAS] Census lookup, please???
    2. Hello: Is there anyone out there that has the 1850 Lancaster Co. census and could lookup 2 households for me? I'm seeking information on the two John MONTGOMERYs in the county on pages 164 and 189. I'm most interested in the wives' names to help me determine if I'm on the right track. Many thanks for your time. Best regards, Tracey Baldwin

    1. Re: [SCLANCAS] NEISSEN (Baker/Bird)
    2. Bill, I'm always interested in your queries as our family lines seem to continually criss-cross. I have W. Lee Bird (1838-1864) Lancaster, SC, married to Corlita Baker (no further info on her). I have 8 "Bakers", four of which are married to "Birds" (my family line). If you find anything else on Baker that tie into my Birds, would you please pass on to me? I have no parentage on any of the eight "Bak ers" that I have and would appreciate any help. It would be interesting to know if they are all connected! Thanks........Fran

    3. We must be related Bill. There is a possibility that my 3rd great grandmother was a Hughes. Her name was Elizabeth and she said on the 1850 Perry Co., KY census that she was 68, which would make her born in 1782, and that she was born in PA. She m. Thomas Young. The only marriage record I can come up with is Thomas Young to Elizabeth Hughes on May 18, 1795 in Lincoln Co., KY. Now back then, Lincoln Co. was huge and came back from central KY across the bottom of the state and touched VA. So it could be them. Except if their ages are right on the 1850 census, they would be 13 and 14 years old. Even back then, I don't think so. But I have a lot of confidence that the census could have the wrong ages on it! I keep hoping I'll run into a Hughes researcher who will have better info than I do and know if this is my couple or not. And so, I have gone into this long explanation so I could ask......Bill, do you know my Elizabeth? Was she truly a Hughes? <G> Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: RW Hughes <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 24, 2000 11:59 AM Subject: Re: [SCLANCAS] HUNTER Family > > And while worrying about your thinking I was a crack-pot, I sent the note > to > > the list instead of directly to you! 3. My family was buried at Westville (Twitty, Gaskin, Ellis). I also have a Cauthen Family; I looked in that book and didn't find Henry or Susan Hunter. Seems like the Horton family had Wests in that family...Good Luck! 3. I show William Ruffin Bennett married to Sarah Ann Comfort Mackey, daughter of Andrew Jackson and Sara Elizabeth Douglas Mackey. She was pretty old (23) so she may very have been a widow. In the 1860 census, in William and Comfort's house is a 7 year old Allece (female) and I assumed it was from a prior marriage. The preacher's name was Reverend William Figuars Brasington, a well known baptist preacher and my grea great grandfather. 1. [SCLANCAS] Margaret NEISSEN
    2. RW Hughes
    3. I apologize in advance to any of y'all who get this more than once, but I am cross-posting to several lists at once. I am hunting for information on a NEISSEN family, probably of the Lancaster County area, in the late 1700s and/or early 1800s. I have been trying to find the maiden name of a maternal line 4xgreat grandmother. Some evidence from an old family Bible now indicates that her maiden name may have been NEISSEN. I do know that her given name was Margaret, and she was called Peggy. According to census records, she would have been born about 1797±, and died about 1882 in Flat Creek Township of Lancaster County, SC. I know nothing at all of her family. She was married at some time prior to 1825 to a man with the surname of BAKER, possibly Joseph BAKER. I don't know when he was born, but do know that he died in 1838. Any help with this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Bill Hughes [email protected]
