    3. A Mortality Schedule Example -- Mortality schedules were recorded with each US Federal Census. This is why they are available in years like 1850, 1860, etc. One of the most noticable differences between mortality schedules and death record vitals from probate court are precinct and household information. To give you a better idea how this works, I'll use the 1870 Greenup County, KY Census and Mortality Schedule to give you both a visual and online example. If an individual died between 1 Jul 1869 and 30 June 1870 before and after the 1st of the year of the census, they should appear in the Mortality Schedule for that Census year. Connect to http://www.getaway.net/dsmith/mortality/1870/greenup.htm as an example. This is the 1870 Greenup Co., KY Mortality Schedule. Scroll down to the FIELDING surname and note that this family had a bad 1869-1870 year! You can be assured that each FIELDING is part of the same household since they all are listed from Precinct 5, Household 145 For those of you who don't want to make the connection, the deceased family members include John, age 15, died Oct 1869 of inflam of bowels; Maggie, age 4, died Feb 1870 of fever; and Owen, age 43, died Dec 1869 as he was thrown from a handcar on the RR. To find the associated family in the 1870 Greenup County, KY Census, you would jump to Precinct 5 and to household 145. Do that now by going to http://www.getaway.net/dsmith/vanbibber/1870grco.html. This is the 1870 Greenup Co., KY Census online (may take a few minutes to load as it's nearly 1 MB of text). Once again for those that don't want to bother with the connections, I'll list the output below. Household 147/145 FIELDING Margaret, 42 Patrick, 20 Mary, 22 James, 11 Henry, 13 Fannie, 09 You should note that Margaret is listed as the head of household and that Patrick is her son. If you hadn't already consulted with the Mortality Schedule, you would probably be wondering things like * Who is/was Margaret's husband * Why isn't he listed as the head of household * Who (if any) where children missing in ages between 20 and 13? The Mortality Schedule would answer all these questions. Thanks, Darrell Smith P.S. I only used the Fielding example because it was a good one. I do not have additional information on this family line. <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< Darrell L. Smith dsmith@mis.net
