    2. There was a census for 1860, however many of the county lines changed between 1860 and 1870 post war. So you may have trouble finding relatives because the countiy lines changed - not because they moved. The 1890 census was mostly destroyed in a fire in 1921. What wasn't destroyed by the fire itself had severe water damage. There is very little of it left at all. The 1890 veteran's census was taken for statistical purposes at first, but since the original census is gone, most rely on it to locate families during that year. The 1890 census lists the veteran if they were still living, gives their mailing address city/state, and lists and present medical conditions related to military service. If the veteran is not living it often lists the widow who received the pension-if they are still living. Look in the files/microfilm for the location that the veteran enlisted - not their 1890 location. jk
