My GG Uncle James Emmitt a native of Pike Co. was the mfg. and distributor nationwide a sort ot linament in the late 1800's that could be used internally or rubbed on the skin. named "Emmitts Discovery". Very extravagent claimd were for it . It was a cure for almost anything from deafness, arthuritus, consumption, stroke or anything, that may have ailed a person or beast. . I am told it came about as the result of an accident in Jame's distillery when his mule kicked over a can of coal oil spilling into a barrel of his best whiskey. Redistilling would not remove the bad taste so he tried rubbing it on his arthuritis, it helped. He bottled it for sale and made so much more it kept his distillery busy for years. the Indians in the west bought lots of it, I suppose for drinking since it was not taxed. Does anybody have one of the old bottles it was sold in, or more information on same. James died in 1893 stopping the supply. I have been told some people kept a bottle of it hidden away fo many years afterward reserving it for the most urgent emergencies.. Maybe some one still has some of it waiting for such an emergency.
