Have looked high and low, for years and years, to find any trace of my great-grandfather, Levi Tillman Hise (Van Hise, Voorhise),who said on his Civil War enlistment papers that he was born in Scioto County. Could he have meant Scioto Township in Ross County? Can anyone tell me where I might find a clue to this name, which can be spelled so many different ways? My father said that the name had originally been Van Hise, but I am not certain about that. Levi's birth date was 1821.
