    2. Carol Montrose
    3. Birth & Death records are USUALLY in Probate court of the county in which the event took place 1867-1908 Death records 1908- mid 1940's at Ohio Historical Society, Columbus, Ohio Velma Ave, @ I-71 and 17th ave. Death records mid 1940's till present, State of Ohio Vital Statistics, 35 E. Chestnut, Columbus, Ohio Birth records State of Ohio (see above address) 1908- to present Marriage and divorce records in County Probate court from the beginning of the N.W. territory. EXCEPT there is a state wide index found at State of Ohio Vital STatistics, (see above address) from 1957 naturalizations can be in "any court of record" until about 1906, then Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization took over. Mostly in Ohio, I've seen Naturalizations in Chancery & Clerk of Courts records until about 1840/50 then in Probate Court. Recorder's office has soldier's grave registrations for their county. of course, w/ 88 counties, I'm sure there is an exception or two but this is the basic plan. Hope this helps. Carol

    3. Several people have asked that I post the response to my question on the list. I received the following: I was in Scioto County last year. marriage and birth records are in the same office. Death records should be listed in the Bureau of Vital Statistics not in the Courthouse. Probate and naturalization records should be in the clerks office. Donna Vaughn Riverside,CA.USA Rooter@pe.net

    1. Henry COX
    2. Chris & Elna Cox
    3. Hi, all. I'm searching for information on my g-g-g-grandfather, Henry COX, a Scioto County (and even perhaps Ross County) resident in the mid-1820s to '30s. He was born in Louisville and migrated to the Scioto Valley, but I'm unsure if he came with family (and if so, at what age) or by himself. In Ohio, he married Vicy UTT, a member of a pioneer family in the Scioto Valley. Henry, Vicy and family and Vicy's father, Henry UTT, eventually moved to western Illinois. Does anyone on the list have information on these lines or know where I can find some help? Thanks. Chris Cox coxfam5@swbell.net

    1. Freshley
    2. Hello fellow researchers, The folks I am searching for are Jacob F. Freshley(Froechle/Froeschle) and Catherine Weidmier Freshley. They came to this country in 1851, landing in New York and then traveling on to Cincinnati,OH and settled near that city, where they lived for 9 years, then moved on to Spencer Co., IN. Great-grandpa- Louis Freshley was born in Portsmouth, OH. When they came to this country they probably had about 7 or 8 children, and one of them(an infant) died just before they arrived in this country, so would have been buried in NY. (They didn't tell anyone the baby had died, so it wouldn't be buried at sea). I have been researching this family in our area in Southern Indiana and I don't think all of the children came with the parents to IN. There would have been more of them here if they had. Are there any Freshley researchers out there who have a connection. Parents: Jacob F. Freshley b. 7 Feb. 1818 -Census rec.lists Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany Catherine Weidmeir Freshley b.3 June 1817-same birth place. The names I have for children are: Frederick J. b. abt 1843 The 4th child was named George Freshley b. 21 Nov. 1845 Wittenberg, Germany, there was a total of 12 children. Caroline b. 26 April 1853 John b. abt 1855 Charles b. abt. 1857 Louis b. 22 April 1859- Portsmouth, Scioto Co., OH Those are the only children I have been able to find and as there were 12 children and 1 died in transit there should have been 5 more who could have stayed in OH. Any info would be appreciated and I will be delighted to share info from the families in this area. Thank you,Virginia Sorry this is so long

    3. If you don't find someone here to help you, try writing to the Adjudent General of the state of ohio, Rife Tower, State & High. Columbus, Ohio 43215. ask them to check their soldier's grave registration for him. Or Recorder's office in the county that you think he was buried. The card file should have some basic info i.e. b & d, place of burial, co & reg. and possibly next of kin. Good hunting! Carol

    3. Donna, write to Probate court in the county in which your people died, ask if there is a will or estate. If not a will, ask them if there are letters of administration in the estate pkt or a list of heirs. That should tell you their relationship if there is one close. Good hunting! Carol

    1. Clark
    2. Dear Carol, Thank you for your response to my query concerning the murder of John Larenzo Clark on 6 Aug 1872. We tried to find the court records for that time period. They were in a tall large stack, and not in any order. We lifted books and moved them, trying to find the one that would have records for that time period, I think this strained my back. We finally felt that we had to give up. This was a number of years ago, and there may be a better order today. I would like to go back, but I do not know when. Do you know where newspapers for that time would be? I was unable to locate any, but as I said that was sometime ago, and more is available all the time. As much as the murder interests us, we would even more like to trace his possible descendants. Dorris Lagow

    1. Email-Digest Setting
    2. Mark Meinhart
    3. Genealogy Researchers, This has been mentioned before, as I remember several months ago, and I thought I would comment about it. I'm a member of a dozen genealogy email groups throughout the US. I assume most of you are. I changed all my emails to the DIGEST mode of the groups. THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS BEEN OFFERED OUT THERE. Several reasons. 1. I get fewer emails. 2. The Digest mode list the email group you are receiving it from, OHIO, PENN, etc. 3. When I get an email sent to me it stands out instead of getting lost in 50-100 emails over a weekend. 4. I don't have to open each email, there are several and more per digest. 5. The only disadvantage is that you don't get it right away. I assume most of you read you email in the evening or early morning anyway. Check it out. Have a good weekend. ^ ^ . . 1. Clarks/Brown/Radclliff/Ratcliff
    2. I am seeking information on the families of John Clark and Nancy Brown Clark that lived in Jackson county in the 1850's and early 1860's. They moved to Jefferson County, IL in the 1860's. Their son, John Lorenzo, and family went with them, but returned to Jackson Col, and John was murdered 6 Aug 1872, supposedly by a man named Radcliff or Ratcliff. We would like to learn information concerning the parents of John Clark, and Nancy Brown, any information concerning the family of John Lorenzo, and any information on the murder. John, the husband of Nancy Brown, was a blacksmith, before buying land there. They MAY have lived in Columbiana Co., Ohio earlier.

    3. Have you tried obtaining a copy of her death certificate from Ill? It may contain information on her parents. How about her marriage license application? She should be listed in the 1850 census with her parents. I'd be glad to give you the references for the PIERCES listed in Pike Co. in the 1850 census if you are close to a location to get the film? 2. john emmitt
    3. Hi: Does anyone out there have access to the Gibson Cem. records at Alma in Ross Co. Ohio. I am looking for the burial place of Charles GROSS born in 1847. It is believed he was a Civil War Soldier who may have died young from wounds suffered in the war. He was listed at age 22 at home with parents with no occupation listed on the 1870 census. Was he too ill to work? Family members say he was killed in the Civil War. The 1870 Census proves this was not true. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated..
