hello everyone: i just wanted to say how sweet and conforting it is to have this digest available to me. i have written in a few times myself, needing help or offering to help. i recentally hooked up to roots web digest and it is awful. there is so much bickering and e-mails that come through to you at are hateful if you ask the wrong question. the subject matter in some areas isn't fit to talk about in a mixed croud. so i just wanted to say thank you for being such a sweet group of people and for keeping this digest clean and to the point of genealogy. take care and im glad i have this little space to come to..maggie coughlan
My GGrandfather was Abraham BRUBAKER/BREWBAKER and he lived in Benton Twp., Pike Co. Ohio as late as 1860. I could not find him in the 1870 census. He owned 200 acres of land and I was wondering the best way to get the record of his land purchase. Norma
--------------------------------------------------------------------- [ F O R W A R D E D M E S S A G E ] --------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS IS FOR NOTIFICATION TO ALL ROOTSWEB MAILING LISTS From: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com Subject: RootsWeb now blocking attachments and HTML --------------------------------------- Hi, folks -- Well, it took almost two months longer than expected, but we're right now installing a SmartList hack that blocks file attachments (including VCARDS), HTML messages and enriched text postings. Sorry about the delay: things have been crazy around here. This note is to let you know how it works. When a member sends something to a mailing list written in HTML, or with a non-plain-text attached file, the list server will send the member's message back to them, with a note at the very bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. A COPY OF THIS REJECTION MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO OWNERS AS WELL! That's because the member may write back to you to complain or to ask for help, and it can be pretty confusing if they write a reply to a message that you never saw. So when you as the listowner suddenly start getting messages from YOURLIST-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com, quoting some ungodly HTML mess that you never saw before, don't be alarmed. :-) It just means the list server is rejecting a MIME message that was sent to your list, and that you may get a response from the poster. Attachments and HTML will be blocked from every list alike. Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative

Does anyone have the 1990 census for Scioto County that is willing to do a look-up for me. I am looking for a John PENN and his wife Lula. John lived in Scioto County earlier in the 1890's. He went to TN in 1898/99 where he married Lula HOLT. I cannot locate him in TN in the 1900 census and need to know if he returned to OH. If anyone can check this for me I would be most appreciative. I do now have access to this census where I live. I meant 1900 Census

New to the list. sent a query but didn't see it on the list. Will try again. Dodds, Bryson and Cratty families left Butler Co PA and moved to Scioto Co, Ohio in early 1800's. Buried in Mt. Joy and ?Harmony? cemeteries there. Presbyterian Ulster Scot families. I am searching for anyone researching these families. I am descended from Alexander Bryson who moved to Ohio and his son and daughter-in-law Margaret Dodds. I am not related to the Cratty's but this familiy was in the same church and migrated with my families and there may be some intermarriages. Please let me know if there is anyone working on these familiy lines. I would like to share info. Pattee

Queries, sources and family reports welcome! > (No GEDCOMS or ATTACHMENTS to email please!) Hello Deanna, Yes, I would dearly love to find my branch of Montgomerys in Portsmouth, OHio. I am looking for info on the WILLIAM H. H. MONTGOMERY who was born 1856, where? ma.MARY EMMA ROSS. He died at age 47, cause of death unknown. Occupation: Bricklayer, worked in the local brickyard. They had 6 children, one of them, Kathleen Montgomery ma. Chancy Ray Suffron, who owned a barber shop in Portsmouth. They, Kate and Chancy and one child,2 1/2 yrs. died within hours of each other and are buried all in one grave in Greenlawn Cemetery. My father, Roger, the only survivor was only 7 yrs. old and had to be raised by aunt and uncle living in the Cincinnati area. WILLIAM AND EMMA MONTGOMERY had other children, Elva and Elza, twins, Lillian Mae, Anna (dec.as a child), Harry(dec. at age 18). According to the 1900 census, Ohio, City of Portsmouth (Wayne Township)states William was born in ohio. Then a very shot obituary in the local paper states resedence was 465 East 6th St. Stated hw was well known in the city and was a brick layer by trade. Born Mar.13, 1856 and for past 15 yrs had been a resident of the city. Funeral took place at he Christian Church conducted by Rev. G.P. Taubman, pastor. I am trying to find related descendents and exchange information. I would like to find out where William was born and who were his parents. I am anxious to trace my Montgomery line back to Europe, if possible. There are still two original Montgomery's of this line still living besides myself, one in Wheelersburg and one in Fremont, CA. They are quite elderly but have given me some information but they do not have the answers to my questions mentioned here. Montgomery's are related to the Ross's also of Portsmouth. I have been told by a Ross cousin in Portsmouth that somehow the Montgomery family have a connection to the Sly family. Any help would be appreciated. Do you happen to know Betsy in the genealogical section of the Portsmouth Library. I have met her and she is most helpful. The last time we were there was 2 yrs ago but when you are traveling time is limited. I needed more time to find local people, who may have some clue or remember their grandparents stories. Many thanks again. If I have any information that may help someone else on these lines, I would be most willing to help them out with what I have. I can continue my branch on this line to the present. Happy hunting! Connie Backers, No. Calif.
I was wondering which Montgomery line you are looking for. I know some Montgomery families. There are several Montgomery families living in the community that I live in. Whoever is looking for them, if you would like, I will do a little research for you. I go to the health department quite a bit and the library. I also look up marriages. Let me know if you are interested. Deanna Jones

In reference to MONTGOMERY inquirey: sorry im so long answering this. there were several MONTGOMERY"S in the 1870 census of Scioto county. if you want a list of themk all let me know, ill be happy to send them to you. in reference to William H. MONTGOMERY i found the following. W.H.H. MONTGOMERY in township of Portsmouth on page 544 in the court records book for scioto county i found the following on a William MONTGOMERY. he is mentioned in the will of George BELOAT in 1831, it mentions that Williams wife was nancyBLOAT MONTGOMERY who at the time of the will had already passed away. he wasen't eft anything in particular, i believe he was among those listed who shared the estate in general. William is also listed in the will of Michael LACROIX in 1834. it listed there that this mr.LACROIX's children were to live with William and his wife Hannah until they were of age. this is possible that Hannah was his 2nd wife Listed in a much larger will was the following, word for word: will of Matilda MONTGOMERY dated 23april1846. will written in jan, 1846 township of Porter Ohio dev; children of my deceased brother Abraham MONTGOMERY $1 each annually until 14 years.: mother Hannah MONTGOMERY, my interest in Mills situated on Pine creek: my niece Catherine M. LACROIX, nephew William LACROIX, a sister Melissa MCKEE. with John M> BERRY and Uri NURSE. AA paper in file, not dated or identified, has the names Ellis MONTGOMERY 1, Josephine MONTGOMERY 2, Hannah MONTGOMERY 4Elizabeth MONTGOMERY 5, Homer MONTGOMERY 6, William H. MOTGOMERY 6.(total 24) (my Note it could be the amounts given to the ch (probably children) of testators dec'd bro Abraham, showing their ages from 13-8.) will; of Hannah MONTGOMERY on 12oct1849 written 3sept1849 all to Melissa MCKEE who is also exec. witness Constantine FULLER and George W. FLANDERS it also ahow where MONTGOMERY"S had papers as guardians of the LACROIX children. ill check other 2 books and get bacl. aol has shuit down on me once and want to get this sent before it happens again and i loose all this and have to do it again.:) sincerely maggie coughlan cogger 48@aol.com
Regarding Pleasant WEBB family. On 1850 Census Ohio, Fayettte coounty the following WEBB family is depicted: Father: JohnsonWEBB born about 1810 Wife: Nancy ??? born about 1810 Daughter : Permelia WEBB born 23 Dec. 1836, Southern Ohio : died 22 Dec 1919 Shelby County Ohio Could this WEBB family be connected to your Pleasant WEBB ??? jJim Purnell mijnarf@aol.com
Can anyone supply additional information about Pleasant Webb and his family. Does anyone know who his parents were? Help? Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about 1762?. In 1880 his son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland. It is believed that he died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 he was in Scioto/Ross County, Ohio area and was said to be a notorious character, said to be a Tory during the Revolutionary War. Pleasant was in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830, he did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. A writeup on Scioto County, Ohio states that in 1803 Pleasant Webb murdered a man named Squires at the Licks and the salt boilers drove him away from Licks after his crime. It appears that Pleasant went into Greenup County, Kentucky. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown (Margaret?) BLACKWELL had the following children: James WEBB, Elias WEBB, Hanley WEBB, Aden WEBB, Temperance WEBB, William WEBB, Margaret WEBB, Sarah (Sally) WEBB, and Baker WEBB. ---------------------------------------------------------- Larry D. Passing along the tip.
The Probate court will have the birth & death certificates from 1867 at least, until 1908, December I think. After that most counties set up a Health dept to among other things, register the births & Deaths and forward the copies to the State dept of Health, Dept of Vital Statistics. So if you don't find the record at one (the cheapest) try the other.. My Great Grandfather's death certificate in 1920 couldn't be found at State VS, but when I walked into the Ross Co. Dept of Health and asked for a copy, they went and got it like they knew it was there! (he must have fallen the other way across the county line because most of the other "kin" were in Pike Co.) (actually he died in Richmondale, I was just being funny...) In OHIO Birth & Death records are SUPPOSED to be public records but the "officers of the court" can make it very difficult for you to look at them yourself. At OS=VR, they will xerox the certificate after you look up and give them the page & vol number (most of the time you must make an appointment to search their records and they will give you a 3 1/2 hours appointment in about two weeks time) After they let you look at the xerox copy, you must give it back to them usually they tear it up in front of you. If you wish a copy, you must pay them, they will make another copy, certify it if you wish (and are willing to pay for it) and mail it/them to you. Franklin County Health Dept told me that you have to make an appointment with the County Commissioners (I must say thought that you can obtain the copies while you wait and they don't charge for uncertified copies if you just ask for a few at a time) ...other counties are not as difficult, but all MUST give you some type of access, even if it is like Lawrence Co. used to be and they'd let you look One afternoon a week and there was no place to lay the books you had to stand and hold the book and try to make your notes, or sit on the floor in the hallway to look. I believe that is not the case now. Sorry, I didn't intend to get off on this again.... Carol
