    1. Virginia to Kentucky to Ohio and further west movement
    2. Susan, Much of this movement seems to be connected with Revolutionary war vets. Their families were given land grants to settle westwardly. Often they started out in Kentucky. The vet and spouse and each child were often given a grant. I am sure there are other reasons. I just know that two of my lines moved for this reason. Valerie

    3. In response to Rita Gayle Louk, I have noticed many of the early settlers of Ross county, have come from Virginia thru Kentucky and spent some time in Mason County, Kentucky, just as her family did. Later many continued their migration to Illinois. Does anyone know the reasons behind these similar moves by so many families? Susan

    3. I am searching for anyone who might have information on the line of Christian SONGER and Catherine HICKMAN, in particular, the names of their children. I have a Margaret "Polly" SONGER who married John NORRIS on 16 Apr. 1829 in Wytheville VA. I do not know if SONGER was her maiden name, or if she was married before, as she had 3 children when she married John Norris. Family tradition tells that she was either an ATWELL or married to an ATWELL who left her a widow, then she married Mr. Norris. I can find no documentation of any ATWELL connection. The SONGERs and the NORRISes all later moved to Lawrence Co., OH. The NORRISes went from there to Missouri, where they are now. Any tidbits of information will be welcome, and I am willing to share what I have. Thank you Lynne Norris

    3. I have several requests for help with a family tree that keeps growing branches. My first request is for help with HAZELBAKER. My maiden name is HAZELBAKER and I understand that it originates in the southern part of Ohio. Many of my relatives are located in the Portsmouth, Otway, and Brush Creek Township areas. My grandfather was Elvin Collins HAZELBAKER and my grandmother was Pearl KOCH HAZELBAKER. However, they are my really my great-grandparents but because they adopted my father Dennis Nelson HAZELBAKER in his youth they became my grandparents. His real father is Joseph Jay SHERWOOD. This was found out later in my father's life . Joseph SHERWOOD was borned and raised around Chillicothe area and his last known address is in the northern suburb of Cincinnati around Norwood or Loveland. My father has not heard from Joseph SHERWOOD since he was a child and it has become my dream to locate him or his family so that some voids can become filled. 2. Help!, I have been searching all over the Scioto Valley for my gggrandfather's death certificate/place of death. His name was Elmer Elton(sometimes switched as Elton Elmer) James. He is burried in Ross County but they have no death record on him. He was born in 1871 and died in 1927 according to his tombstone. He was pastor of Owensville United Methodist Church in 1926and 1927 placing him in Clermont County. They have no record of his death. I was told he actually was living in Wilmington and driving to the church. Clinton County has no record of his death. Can anyone help me? He served various churches throughout the Scioto Valley and not all were Methodist. He was married to Susie O'Briant in Ross Co. in 1891. Was a pastor there. His father was William M. James b: Dec 31, 1837 and died June 29, 1897. I can't find his place of death either. I could not find it in Clinton co. where his widow remained nor in Ross Co. where he is burried. Thank you for any help or suggestions. Valerie Johnson

STEELEs, but have only just joined the list yesterday. If anyone has the original post to which Beverly replied, I'd appreciate a copy. Here is my Steele line: Isaac Perry STEEL was born on September 19, 1849, in Pennsylvania (probably Chester or Delaware County). His parents were Nathan (possibly Matthew) STEEL and Margaret ERSKINE. He had one sister that I know of, Margaret STEEL, who remained in Pennsylvania. Isaac migrated to Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH, possibly with two of his uncles (John and Samuel Erskine), where he earned his living as a miller. I do not know whether his parents migrated or remained in PA. Isaac married Laura STONE (b. abt 1860, d. abt 1948), about whom I know little, either in PA or Chillicothe. They had seven children: Carl, Clarence, Florence, Mack, Edith, Wayne, and Clyde Eugene; all were born in or near Chillicothe. Isaac died on June 19, 1909, in Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH, and was buried in Grandview Cemetery. (The final "e" was added to our name sometime after Isaac's death.) I believe that Carl, Clarence and Florence STEEL(e) all married and had families, but I know nothing about them. Mack STEEL(e) never married, died in his 30s. Edith STEEL(e) never married and was the last Steele to have possession of the family's farm in Chillicothe. She died sometime after 1945. Wayne STEELE was born around 1899 and was a minister. He authored The Religion of Beauty, a book published in 1940. He died in the 1970s, I believe in Chicago, IL. Clyde Eugene STEELE was my grandfather. He was born in 1901 and graduated from West Point in 1917. He was a career officer in the army and received the bronze star (WWII). His highest rank was that of colonel, though it was attained after the war. He married Susannah Hopkins CULBERTSON. He died in 1956. Susannah Hopkins CULBERTSON was born with the name Susannah Hopkins SNYDER on November 15, 1918, in Marion Co., IN. She was adopted by Charles and June CULBERTSON on November 29 of that same year. Her birth-mother, Mabel SNYDER, was living in Indianapolis, IN, at the time of the adoption. The CULBERTSONs lived in Cincinnati, OH. Charles died before 1968. June CULBERTSON was born on June 19, 1887, and died in July of 1978. Mabel SNYDER moved to California and became a Christian Scientist. SHe died in the 1970s; I do not believe she ever married or had any other children. I have much information to share about the ancestors of the Ross County ERSKINEs. The STEEL(e)s and STONEs have me stumped and I could use any help that may be available out there. I haven't yet done much digging on the CULBERTSONs and SNYDERs, and so would love any input there as well. Peace, Lissa

    1. DAWSON Commonwealth War Grave list on-line
    2. James W. Dawson
    3. I just thought that I would let everyone know that there now exists a complete listing of all the Dawsons who fought and died in the service of the armies of the British Commonwealth during the First and Second World Wars at http://www.globalserve.net/~dawson/projects.htm . There were 1,432 Dawsons who fought and died either while in the service of their countries during the First World War and Second World Wars or who as civilians died as a result of the various conflicts. It might be of interest to those pursuing the genealogy of Dawsons from America that a number of American Dawsons are also listed here, since they enlisted in a Commonwealth army prior to the United States entering either world war. I have organized the listings intially by the cemeteries in which they are buried, but will in the next week or so list the individuals alphabetically, then by country or origin and then by rank. These records will be of interest since they often aside from listing the individuals enlistment number and regiment, they also frequently include the addresses of the next of kin. The second phase of this project will document the attestation papers, medical histories, service records, etc. of Canadian Dawsons since these are easier for me to acquire. I hope that you find this to be a useful addition to the Dawson Family History Project site.
