    1. Chillicothe location
    2. Janice Simmons
    3. According to Allen Eckert in "The Frontiersmen", reference notes: There has always been some degree of confusion in regard to the location of the Shawnee village Chillicothe, mainly because five different Shawnee towns went by this name in Ohio. The principal town of each Shawnee sept (or clan) was named after the sept. When such a sept moved to a new location, the town it built was known by the same name. The particular Shawnee town in questioner here was the fourth of five Shawnee villages to be so designed after the Chalahgawtha sept. It was near the junction of Massie' s Creek and the Little Miami River, three miles north of the present county seat, Xenia. The other four Chillicothes were: (1) on the side of the present city of Piqua; (2) near the village of Westfall, four miles down the west bank of the Scioto River from present Circleville; (3) on the side of present Hopetown, three miles north of present Chillicothe in Ross County; and (4) on the north fork of Paint Creek ten miles northwest of present Chillicothe on the site of present Frankfort. Hope this clears up the confusion, Janice

    2. Hi Oldtown is in Green County just north of Xenia. My Question is what did the Shawnee call the area of Chillicothe and Paint Creek near the Scioto River? I know there was a large settlement there at one time. I can remember my grandmother talking about her grandfather fighting indians on lower Paint Ck. 3. I found this passage a little amusing in this book, and wanted to share it with you. Pg. 718 11. Rumer was to circulate in years to come that William Johnson had sired no less than seven hundred children and perhaps as many as a thousand. Governor Clinton felt this to be somewhat of an exaggeration and personally declared that the real figure, though quite large, was probably not much over three hundred!

    3. The lady who wanted to know about Tecumseh, have you ever read the fascinating series of books by ALAN ECKERT? He lives in Bellefontaine, Ohio. I live in Bellefontaine, Ohio and work in Zanesfield, and these books cover alot of fascinating history about Tecumseh, Simon Kenton, plus so many of the other early settlers of Ohio. I love em! There is THE FRONTIERSMAN, I have read, luv it. I just read WILDERNESS EMPIRE, alot of French and Indian history. I am starting to read THE CONQUERORS. WILDERNESS WAR GATEWAY TO EMPIRE TWILIGHT OF EMPIRE SORROW IN OUR HEART, THE LIFE OF TECUMSEH THAT DARK AND BLOODY RIVER, CRHRONICLES OF THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY These are non-fiction and historical novels. 3. All What the Shawnee knew as Chillicothe is very far removed from present day Chillicothe. It is a small village just outside of Xenia, Ohio (to the northeast as I recall) now known as "Oldtown", Ohio. I believe that places it in either Clarke or Greene county. Ed Locker

    3. Have you checked what is available at the State Library of Ohio and the Ohio Historical Society for the county? In London, there is a museum/historical society with limited hours, and an active genealogical society in Madison Co.. I can't remember about the library in London, but court house is pretty helpful. W.Jefferson Library has a genealogy section and an obit file. I think there is a Memorial library or museum over on Lilly Chapel Rd in W. JEff. Good hunting! BTW, what surname are you researching? 3. There is a very active genealogical society in Chillicothe w/ a library, there is a genealogy room in the main library (with an obit index) but not familiar w/ historical society. I doubt you will find Native Americans in the census, but you might check the DAWES rolls (on microfilm) or have you checked to see if someone might have published this information? Good hunting! Carol

    3. Hi, Does anyone know where the Historical Society is in Madison County Ohio. I would like to go there Weds to look for info on BENJAMIN N WALKER b 1820 in Ohio possibly Madison County. Originally we thought Pickaway County but that was a dead end. They suggested Madison county. Also if someone could give me an idea how to get there from east side of Columbus, I would appreciate it. Thanks Debbie Meinhart

    3. What is the best source for accurate information about the Shawnee town of Chillicothe in the later 1700 and early 1800's? Are there any local history societies or libraries? I know the Ohio Historical Society has information ,but they are so large, and it takes a long time to get a response. Does anyone know if there were any indians listed as living in Chillicothe in the early census records? I am trying to find information on the ancestors of Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet, or his brother Tecumseh. Any info appreciated. Thanks so much. Nancy Tobin Orlando, FL

    3. John, have you tried the National Archives to see if you could get a copy of your civil war soldier's pension application file? It may contain information as to where he lived after his war service and may even include such items as marriage certificates, lists of children and a list of places he lived after he got out of the service. just drop a line to National Archives, Washington D.C. they'll send you a form, fill it out and send it back. If they find the file, they'll send you a letter and give you 30 days to send the fee to them for copies. Tell them you want to know how much copies of ALL documents in the file(s) would be. One file for Military service (usually not very large but they charge $10,) and pension file (usually larger and this is where the documentation will be) they usually will send 20 pages for your $10 but they are the 20 pages they THINK you'll want. I think additional copies are 25 cents after the initial 20 for $10. There is also a soldier's grave registration located at the Recorder's office in the county in which the soldier is buried. Also the State Adjudent sp? General's office or possibly in ohio the Governor's office of Veterans Affairs? ( I don't think that is exact, but if you address it that way, I'm sure it'll get to the proper person) Good luck on your quest. Carol

    3. Can anyone help me solve the problem of what happened to any of the GROSSE children mentioned below. CHARLES GROSS born ca 1847. One family source says he was killed in the Civil War. One Charles GROSS from Ohio enlisted in 8-8-62 "B" Co..OH 101st infantry. He was wounded 9-20-63 at Chickamauga Ga., but looks like he went on to serve later .( Not sure this was him). He was found with his mother and stepfather in 1861age 14. And again on the 1870 census age 22 with his mother and stepfather no occupation listed . Was he suffering from wounds that later proved fatal? The marriage records have been searched in Ross & Pike Co. No marriage found. Does anyone have access to the Gibson Cem. records in Ross Co? He could be buried there where his parents are buried. Sophina/Sophia GROSS born ca 1852 m, James H. BUNCH 2 Jun. 1876 in Ross CO. Have no further record. Elizabeth GROSS born ca 1854 m. Edward MEDLEY 3 Jun 1871 in Ross Co. Have no further record. Any help with any of the problems listed above will be greatly appreciated. 3. Hello all. I thought that you may be interested to know that I have recently completed Phase2 of the Dawson Family History Project. This site is much more interactive that the previous site (which still stands, but will be taken down within the coming month). With the exception of the Feedback Page which is still being troublesome, one search the site. The site itself is located at http://ntfp.globalserve.net/dawson [note the ntfp rather than www]. I hope that you find it to be useful. The intent of this site is for it to be the focal point of a collaborative effort to gather and deposit information that will help others in their quests. Please take the time to have a look, and to let me know what you think. Cheers Jim Dawson Dawson Family History Project - A Guild of One Name Studies Site http://ntfp.globalserve.net/dawson
