Have looked high and low, for years and years, to find any trace of my great-grandfather, Levi Tillman Hise (Van Hise, Voorhise),who said on his Civil War enlistment papers that he was born in Scioto County. Could he have meant Scioto Township in Ross County? Can anyone tell me where I might find a clue to this name, which can be spelled so many different ways? My father said that the name had originally been Van Hise, but I am not certain about that. Levi's birth date was 1821. This search has lasted over twenty years and I need some encouragement and new ideas. Mary Hise King in CA

Many years ago some people went to the old Sturgeon family cemetary located on top of the hill behind the farm. It is overgrown now, but these people that visited took pictures. I suspect that they were from a historical society or genealogy organization or something like that. I would like to get copies of those pictures. If anyone knows who these people were, I'd be very grateful if you would inform them of my request. Of course, I will pay for the copies and any other information that I can get. Thank you, Bob

Which county are you ref. to w/ a court house fire? Many of the courthouses had fires, but fortunately, most didn't loose all of their records. Recently I sent to Mercer Co. Mo for a death certificate for 1906 and they sent a letter back that they had had a courthouse fire and they didn't have the records. The fire was in the 1800's ....and according to the Handy Book for Genealogists, not all records were destroyed. AND HOW DID THE DEATH CERTIFICATE GET BURNED 20 years before it was created??? You must be informed as to the dates of fires and the records destroyed. Use Everton's Handy Book for a great guide. Found in most genealogy libraries.. Good hunting! Carol
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII The person looking for her TITUS ancestors..have you checked early land records to see if HE bought land? How about the newspaper index/abstracts done by GREEN(E) I think called Pioneer Ohio Newspapers..several Vol. Have you checked the early Ohio Taxpayers (in print) and the early census? Did he belong to a church? Maybe in their records you will find the family? Have you checked Probate court to see if he had a will and or estate? How do you know he died in Scioto Co.? Hi all, I am having problems finding records on my Great garndfather Charles Lawerence Henize. It seems there was a fire that destroyed some of there records. Is there any way i can find out how he died or get a death certificate? I wrote the county and they show no record of his death. he died April 30 1887. In scioto county. Was ther a newspaper in print at that time? His other children were Margaret Henize and Samuel Henize, James kelly Henize. Margaret and Samuel have lived their entire lives in scioto county. I can't find any living relatives that remember him, since he died so young. He was born in 1849, but I am unsure in what county. Maybe Brown or Lawerence? Thanks Linda Henize
Hi! I am researching the Titus family. The farthest back I have gotten is to a Tetus Titus who married Polly Johnson. His second wife was Rhoda Taylor. Tetus Titus, I believe, was born about 1750 (? where) and died in1829 in Scioto County, Ohio. I would love to know when he moved to Scioto County and from where he came. Tetus and Polly's children are Lydia, John, Susan, Hannah, James, Stephen, Arthur, Rebecca, Sally (Sarah) and Elizabeth (Betsey). Some of these children owned land in Scioto County, Ohio northeast of Portsmouth in the early to mid 1800's. Any info on this family or any other Titus' would be appreciated.
