Hello folks, and welcome back to RootsWeb's newly upgraded list system. If you are receiving this post it is because you are still a subscriber to this list, even though things have been pretty quiet due to a number of issues lately. The lists are back now, and I believe you will like the improvements that have been made. The most obvious improvement is a new RootsWeb login system, which you will find at the following link: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail Only one account per person is needed, and once you have created it you will be able to organize and manage all of your list subscriptions in one handy location. Like anything new there will be something of a learning curve in the beginning, but I really think you will like it for the new security and personalization features for your list subscriptions. And last but not least, please note my email address as List Owner immediately below this message and following my name. Also note the "List information" link below that, which will take you to the information page for this list, where you will find information to help you subscribe, unsubscribe, and some other things based on the current status of your new log in account. I welcome you back to the list, and look forward to working with you in the future tracking down our elusive ancestors. David E. Please DO NOT reply to this on the list I'm the Admin of this list, and I would like to ask for your help if I may. This pertains to digest subscribers ONLY, so folks subscribed in list mode please completely disregard it. The current default format on this list for digest posts is called "MIME," which means you will receive each digest as a single post usually once a day with each individual post for that day appearing as an attachment. This is the one exception to what you may have heard about no attachments on RW lists, but these are quite safe to open. To read or reply to one of the attached posts, you simply double-click it to open it, after which you can reply to it if you choose to. Generally, replying to it will require little or no editing or trimming as was needed with previous digests here. I have recently become aware that reportedly A FEW service providers do not receive this type of digests very well, although the large majority of them do. If you are not able to double-click on an attachment and read it properly, then it is possible that your service provider may be one of the very few unable to receive and deliver them correctly. If so, please drop me a line OFF LIST AT MY ADMIN ADDRESS BELOW, and I will return your subscription to what is called "plain text" format as before. Likewise, if you are able to use these digests without difficulty but simply prefer the plain text format used before, then drop me a line OFF LIST using the same address below and ask me to return your digest to "plain text" format. As another option you may want to try list mode, and receive your list posts immediately as they come in rather than wait for your digest up to 24 hours later. If you are having no difficulty reading or using the current digests this way, then there is no need to reply or let me know. I try very hard to reply to all correspondence from subscribers, but sometimes replying to everyone is simply not always feasible. David List Admin email@example.com

This Friday June 8, my wife and I will leave to attend our son's wedding. We will return home about a week later. Since we do have a normally quiet list I am not going to have someone watch my lists while I am gone, but if the opportunity presents itself I will try look in on them myself if circumstances allow it. In any event, I will read and respond to all mail in order of receipt when I return. If there are any problems I will do my best to resolve them quickly when I get back, but if you have need to contact me please use the list admin addy below and also keep in mind I may not be able to reply for a week or so beginning June 8. I will still be here "minding the store" until that time. Thank you for your cooperation. David E. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, this list has now migrated to "Mailman," the new mailing list system at RootsWeb. Most changes will be hardly noticeable to you as a subscriber and fairly subtle, but the most obvious one will be to those of you who were subscribed in BOTH list mode as well as digest mode. Mailman does not support both modes to the same subscription address, so you are now subscribed only in list mode. If you want to subscribe to digest as well, then you will have to subscribe yourself using an alternate e-mail address. Those of you in ONLY list or digest mode are still subscribed as you were under the old system. Also, there is a brand new list just started for the purpose of asking questions and learning about the new system if you are interested in joining. I am a subscriber as well, but be forwarned that as you might expect it is VERY busy right now, so keep that in mind if you subscribe. You can send the usual "subscribe" message to: <mailto:email@example.com> firstname.lastname@example.org for list mode or <mailto:email@example.com> firstname.lastname@example.org for digest mode If you have any questions about the new system, that is the best place to ask them. You can also ask me off list if you wish, and I will always respond if I can, but please understand that even though I was one of the BETA testers, I am also learning the new system myself. David E. As many of you may already know, RootsWeb is in the transition phase of changing over to a brand new e-mail system called "Mailman," but what you did not know is that this list was supposed to make the migration to the new system today. We are now due to make the change tomorrow, with all 30,000 or so RW lists due to follow in stages over the next couple of weeks. From the standpoint of a subscriber, you will see little real difference in the mail because most of the procedures you are used to will be the same or very similar. As soon as the list has migrated to the new system, they will send me some information to forward to you that will include an online tutorial for you to use in learning what you need to know about the new system. I was one of the BETA testers for it so know a little about it, but rather than flood me with questions please give the tutorial a try first. If you write to me I will always try to respond, but please understand that I have a good number of lists that I am responsible for, so if you multiply that by several subscribers each then you can see why I say that I may or may not be able to respond to everyone. As mentioned above, we are scheduled now to make the change tomorrow sometime, so you will hear from me further as soon as it happens with some information to help you use the new system more effectively. My g-grandfather moved from Baltimore to the San Francisco area in California, where my grandfather was born and even is reported to have run for Mayor at one time but lost. I cannot match any of the names or dates you mention though, but this is all indicative of the frustration I have run into in researching the Schottler surname. Much of my research has created about as many questions as it has answered. :~( I hope this helps. David List/Board Admin

The origination point so far is Hallenberg, Germany where the church records are full of us. I had a young visitor a few years ago named Anja Schoettler (WITH the E) from Hamburg, Germany who was hoping to find out something about her relatives while here in the US. Her father's name is Peter and comes from Stettin. I don't see any relation to us here, but thought maybe your tree, which includes Stettin, may be of help to her. Unfortunately, I've lost contact with her. She is/was a student at the University of Hamburg. There is now a TV personality by that name in Germany. Wonder if it's her. I wonder if you have a Peter in your records.

That is not to say that I am not still searching the possibility. The question came up when Joseph's daughter-in-law, Wilhelmina Schotter (Minnie, married to Joseph's son, Francis) left a notebook that I am in possesion of where she states that Joseph's "daughter was Vivian who married Sawyer". I can't therefore totally discount it but have never found anything to prove it. This notebook had many little "half notes" written in it and I can't help but wonder if it was an error.

I am related to the Schottler clan through my 2nd great-grandmother Anna Maria Merkel (1819-1887) who married Peter Joseph Schulteis (1821-1881). Maria's parents were John George Merkel (1772-1850) and Elizabeth Marie Gerhard (1787-). Her grandparents were George Gerhard (say 1750-) and Catharine Schottler (1751). Catherina's parents were Wilhelm Schottler (say 1720-) and Anna Elizabeth Flatin (say 1720-). I am trying to tie this family to Adam Schottler (say 1720-) who married Anna Catharine ??? (say 1848-). A son Peter Schottler (say 1773-) married Anna Catharina Virherr (say 1785-). A son Adam Schottler (1808-1887) married Sophia Ostermeier (1810-1850). A son Martin Schottler (1833-) married Antionette Bartol (1832-). I could use confirmation that I have these lines correct and might they converge in the early 1700s or before? Appreciate any insight. Donald Schulteis "The Omnibus Portal" http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~djschulteis/

Their son Alfred A. was boy 17 Sept 1881 or 82 in Oakland, CA and died 15 Nov. 1927 in Riverside, CA. I know nothing about a second child. Joseph and Josephine divorced, I assume. She and Alfred show up on the 1885, 1887, and 1889 Washington Territorial Census for Whitman Co. She married OH (Orlando) Downs on 2 Dec. 1888 in Viola, Latah Co., Idaho Territory. The marriage license very clearly states that the JP could find no reason for them not to marry. They move to CA about 1901. I have not found Alfred after the 1889 census. Did Alfred ever have any children? My conncection is through Orlando. He is a half brother to my Gr. Grandfather.
