Mrs. Ellwood Louise Carter Hardwick, age 83, of the Crescent Beach section and widow of Walden T. Hardwick, Sr. passed away Friday, May 7, 2010 at her home following an illness. She was born on August 29, 1926 in Loris, a daughter of the late John R. and Lillie Hardee Carter. She was predeceased by her infant son, Walden T. Hardwick, Jr. and one brother, John Harold Carter. Mrs. Hardwick was a graduate of Loris High School and attended Columbia College. Her career began in civil service at the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Charleston, S.C. during World War II. This continued into government service as a Congressional secretary and ended with her retirement from federal service in 1993. Mrs. Hardwick is survived by one son, Steven T. Hardwick of North Myrtle Beach; three daughters, Ann Hardwick Ward of North Myrtle Beach, Nancy C. Hardwick and her husband Rob Schirmer of Surfside Beach, and Karen Hardwick Beaty and her husband Jim of Decatur, Georgia; five grandchildren: Sally W. Brown and her husband David, Suzanne W. Bayer, Stephanie W. Matthews and her husband Matt, Julie W. Leonard and her husband Ryan, and Wil Beaty; five great grandchildren, Hannah Brown and Griffin Brown, Christopher Bayer, Ella Grace Matthews and Evan Matthews; two brothers, John R. Carter, Jr. and John Kenneth Carter and his wife Chris all of Loris; and three sisters, Pauline C. Collins of Fayetteville, N.C., Hilda C. Wright of Tabor City, N.C., and Mitchelle C. Cox of Surfside Beach. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 9, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Loris. Graveside funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 10, 2010 at Southeastern Memorial Gardens with Rev. Michael Vipperman officiating.
