Samuel William Washington, Jr., 87, of Sherwood Drive died on October 23, 2010. He was born on October 26, 1922 in Conway, S.C., the son of the late Laura Maude Moore and Samuel William Washington, Sr. Sam graduated from Conway High School in 1941. He attended Campbell Junior College for one year prior to transferring to the University of South Carolina where he was in the ROTC Program and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. He graduated in 1945 with a B.A. Degree in Music and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific during World War II until his discharge in 1946. In 1950 he was recalled into the Navy and served for two years during the Korean War. He was co-founder of Hucks and Washington Furniture Company, which was established in 1946. He became the sole owner in 1968 following the death of his uncle and business partner, Curtis Hucks. Sam was very active in the business until illness caused his retirement earlier this year. Sam was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, serving several terms as a Deacon. He was also a member of the Angler Sunday School class, a class he taught for many years. He was an active Rotarian for 57 years and served as pianist for the club. He was a past President and a Paul Harris Fellow. Sam was an avid golfer and a charter member of The Conway Golf Club. He was an accomplished pianist and spent many hours playing for his own enjoyment and that of his family. In addition to golf and the piano, other interests and hobbies included reading and travel. Most importantly, his love, devotion and generosity to family, church and community were evident throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Betty Phillips Washington, formerly of Winnsboro, S.C.; two sisters, Frances Washington Weeks and Vera Washington Harrelson; and one brother, Robert L. Washington. Sam was the father of two daughters, Lucile "Lucy" Washington Coleman (Stan) and Anne Moore Washington, both of Charlotte, N.C.; the grandfather of three grandchildren, Charlotte Coleman Crossland (Brian), Meredith Coleman Sizemore (Stephen) and Stanley David Coleman, III. Other survivors include one sister, Martha Anne "Marty" Washington of Florence, S.C. and Athens, Ga.; two sister-in-laws, Ann Taylor Washington of Conway, and Anne Phillips Hamilton of Greenville, S.C.; and one brother-in-law, Herman G. "Phil" Phillips (Hannah) of Winnsboro, S.C.; a number of nieces and nephews; and close family friend, Anne Newcomb. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to family physician and longtime friend, Dr. John Wilson, Jr., and caregivers Ora Dunlap, Rebecca Bellamy, Loretta Dunlap, Georgia Randall, and Ann Miller of Mercy Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 25, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Conway. Internment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Church Parlor one hour prior to the service.
