Laura Johnson Smart, age 92, died Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Conway Medical Center. Laura was born in Horry County, SC, a daughter of the late Thomas and Catherin Martin Johnson. She was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church for 54 years where she was a member of the choir. Laura was a loving mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by a son, James B. Smart; five brothers, Waterman Johnson, Mitchell Johnson, McKeiver Johnson, Pearlie Johnson and Hartford Johnson; one half-brother, Ervin Johnson; and two half-sisters, Cora Johnson and Joanna Johnson. Surviving are one son, Charles Smart and his wife, Alisha, of Little River; two daughters, Sylvia S. Chavis of Conway and Margie S. Johnston and her husband, Doug, of Sanford, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Jeannie Hampton, Melissa Johnston, John Johnston, Michael Chavis, Mark Chavis, Kim Chavis and Jennifer Benton; four great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Ellis, Courtney Chavis, Patrick Nealy and Eli Benton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Troy Metzner officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.
