    2. RALEIGH, NC - Oakley LeGrande Herring, 82, of Raleigh died Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Rex Hospital. He was born on December 27, 1927 in Conway, SC, and was the son of the late William P. and Maggie Herring. Oak attended Conway Public Schools, and the University of South Carolina from 1955-1959. While at USC he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a Merchant Marine, and also in the Korean War serving in the US Air Force. For more than 40 years he worked for the Central Oil Asphalt Co. Oak was fondly known as 'Mr. Oakwood'. He had a great love and passion for the preservation of the Historic Oakwood neighborhood of Raleigh. He served for two years as President of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood, and later served for two years with the North Carolina Victorian Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jodie Herring and five siblings. Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Donna Colman Harper Herring of Raleigh; his four children, Milena Herring, Stephen Herring, Lisa Cantrell, and Holly Dunkin; two stepchildren, Laura Colman Harper and Joseph Stanway Harper; a sister, May Cutler; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 6-8 p.m. at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd. Raleigh. A memorial service to celebrate Oak's life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Raleigh Moravian Church. A private burial will be held at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Raleigh Moravian Church, 1816 Ridge Rd. Raleigh, NC 27607, or to the charity of one's choice.
