Hildred Clayton Harrelson, Sr., 77, died Sunday, November 21, 2010, at his home following an illness. Born January 13, 1933 in Loris, S.C., he was the eldest son of Alvia Preston Harrelson and Jennie Bell Suggs Harrelson. Mr. Hildred Harrelson graduated Valedictorian at Green Sea High School in 1950 and continued his education earning an Associates Degree from Southeastern Community College. In 1953, he married Betty Jane Springs and began his career with Firestone Tire & Rubber Company where he was employed for twenty-five years. Mr. Harrelson also worked as an independent Health & Life Insurance Agent, Real Estate Agent, and farmer. Mr. Harrelson was a dedicated Christian and an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served in many capacities including: Deacon, Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Building and Cemetery Committees. He was a Charter Member and past President of the Tabor City Lions Club and a past President of the Tabor City Chamber of Commerce. He was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. Mr. Harrelson is survived by his mother, Jennie Bell Suggs Harrelson of Loris; his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Betty Jane Springs Harrelson of Loris; son, H. Clayton "Clay" Harrelson, Jr. and wife, Pamela Workman Harrelson, of Loris; daughter, Amy Lynn Harrelson Edwards and husband, James Hubert Edwards, of Loris; three grandchildren, Hannah Catherine Edwards, Henry Clayton Harrelson and Holly Caroline Edwards; one brother, Bobby Windal Harrelson and wife, Freida Harrelson, of Gastonia, N.C.; two nephews, Victor Harrelson and wife, Ellie Harrelson. and Dean Harrelson and wife, Rhonda Harrelson; two great-nephews; and one great-niece. Mr. Harrelson was predeceased by his father, Alvia Preston Harrelson. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with committal services following at Mt. Zion Cemetery. The Rev. David Watts, Dr. Bill Bennett and the Rev. Bill Thompson will officiate services. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 23, 2010, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Hardwick Funeral Home.
