Hugh E. Smith, Sr., 85, of Orangeburg and formerly of Beaufort, SC died Friday, November 19, 2010 at Magnolia Place in Longwood Plantation, Orangeburg. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 22, 2010 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Orangeburg with the Rev. J. Michael Smith and Rev. Susan Ulmer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Orangeburg. Dr. Smith was born in Mullins, SC, a son of the late Howard B. Smith and Ruth Bethea Smith. He graduated from Mullins High School and attended the Citadel, University of Mississippi, Duke University and the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his internship and residency at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. Prior to practicing medicine Dr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945, on the U.S.S. LST 286. He saw action at the D-Day invasion in southern France and Okinawa, Japan. His rank was a Pharmacist's Mate 1st Class. Dr. Smith began his career in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1954 and retired in 1983. He was the former Chief of Staff at the Orangeburg Regional Hospital, President of the South Central Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, and a member of the South Carolina OB/GYN Association. He was a charter member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church of Orangeburg and a member of Carteret United Methodist Church of Beaufort. He was a past President of Orangeburg Rotary Club & Scout Master of Explorer Sea Scouts. He was an avid sailor and skilled furniture craftsman. He loved his medical practice and patients and he delivered over 5000 babies in 3 Counties. Surviving are his wife of 63 years Mrs. Martha Meares Smith Of the Oaks, a daughter Bonnie Raney (Dan) of Lake Lure N.C., one son, Jefferson H. Smith of West Columbia, daughter in law Kim O. Smith of Aiken, six grandchildren Shannon (Kenny) Perry, Susan (Scott) Justice , Rebecca (Tony) Williams, Misty S. Goldiner, Kimberly S. (Tom) Patterson, Christopher B. Smith and 5 great grandchildren, brother in law Sam (Laura) Meares of Fayetteville N.C. Predeceased by one brother Dr. Howard B. Smith Jr., two sons, Hugh E. Smith Jr. and Brian B. Smith .
