In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 210263, Columbia, SC 29221. Mrs. Dinkins was born August 19, 1919, in Horry County, SC, and passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2010. She was a daughter of the late Rufus James Huggins and Frannie Stroud Huggins. Mrs. Dinkins was a graduate of Floyds High School and Winthrop College. She was one of 13 siblings and always felt very blessed to be a part of such a large and loving family. As the devoted wife of a career U.S. military officer, Lucille served her country admirably alongside her husband. She willingly performed the many duties of a military wife and raised their three sons in four countries and in six states. She loved to tell stories of their many adventures as a family, most of them happy memories, but many of them quite serious and challenging, such as the time they were stationed in Germany during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Her husband was the commander of a nuclear warhead battalion and therefore unavailable to his family in the height of the crisis. Lucille was called upon to stand ready to evacuate her family alone on a moment's notice """ all while suffering from a bad case of the flu. Wherever she lived all over the world, Lucille was an active member of her church and community. For the past 41 years, she had been a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church and had joyously served in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher and senior choir member. She was also a member of the Whitehall Garden Club and the Gideons Auxiliary, Irmo. Lucille enjoyed time with her family and grandchildren, visiting her siblings, spending time at the beach, and traveling. She lived a joyous life and especially enjoyed serving others. Mrs. Dinkins is survived by her husband, Col. Holly W. Dinkins; sons, Dr. H. Kenneth Dinkins, Gene L. Dinkins and David H. Dinkins; brothers, Venston Huggins, R. J. Huggins, Furman Huggins, William 'Billy' Lester Huggins and Nolan Huggins; sisters, Muriel Blanton, Gussie Lally and Virginia Lee ; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Grover, Hicks and Wade Huggins, and sister, Esther Huggins Anderson. |tagline_name class=character displayname=tagline_name name=tagline_namewww.caughmanharmanfuneralhome.comcci:tagline_name Published in The State on June 8, 2010
