George Gately Hammond, 83, of Nichols, S.C., died Friday June 11, 2010 at Marion County Medical Center. Mr. Hammond was born in Horry County, South Carolina, a son of the late Arthur James and Annie Bass Hammond. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired farmer. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Spring Branch Baptist Church. Rev. Jonathan Barbee will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Nancy A. Hammond of the home; two sons, George Dale Hammond of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Brandon Hammond of Washington, D.C.; five daughters, Phyllis A. Duncan of Rock Hill, Patsy H. Mincey of Nichols, Tonia Caulder of Fair Bluff, Angie Turlington of Fayetteville, and Laura Cashin of Charlotte; a sister, Betty Sue Fairfax of Lumberton; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
