Once again in reply to Diane Moore: << "Issued the 12th July 1785 To Jesse Obriant for five pound one Shillsg and five pence for Militia duty 71 days in 1782 Per accot. audited Principal 5,,1,,5 Annual Interest 0,,9,,1" >> It's entirely possible that anyone serving in the American Militia or regular army also served with the Tories some time in 1780, 1781 or 1782 when they were active in the area. Changing sides seems to have been a major pastime around Little Pee Dee during the war - indeed, all over South Carolina. Even Captain Jesse Barfield, 2nd in command of the local (Little Pee Dee) Tory Militia began the war by joining the 2nd SC Regiment. He served under General William Moultrie and Francis Marion during the first British attack on Charleston in 1776. There is evidence that he probably served in a militia unit led by one of the Gregg's in 1779, then he became captain of the Loyalist Militia when it was formed in 1780 after the fall of Charleston to the Brits. Barfield died during the war. But Micajah Ganey signed two different treaties with Francis Marion. The first, in 1781, didn't seem to mean very much to either side. After the second treaty in 1782, Ganey went to Charleston, resigned his British commission, and then fought with the rebel militia. It was stated in one of the books I read on the war (name of book not remembered - there are dozens of them) that others of Ganey's men fought with him at the Battle of Watboo (sp?). So just because someone had rebel militia pay, didn't necessarily mean they were never a Tory. Ganey sold out his lands in Marion County after the war, by the way, and moved to North Carolina. There are no recorded deeds for his land sales, but other deeds refer to them. He had a tract of land near Catfish and John Smith, as mentioned in my earlier message. And he also sold a tract of 100 acres which was located between Buck Swamp and Little Pee Dee River. Interesting that each of these tracts was so near John Smith's and William Harrelson's landholdings. Please excuse cross-posting to the two lists. Jo
