Dan, I truly enjoyed reading your response. Though I was born with northern roots, my ggg-grandfather, Capt. George R. Congdon from Georgetown, SC (also mayor of Georgetown 1862ish-I don't have the year at my fingertips) fought in Sherman's March, and I can appreciate the cause for the insignia. But I am not sure what this means, the fact that legislation was rejected about the renewed patent on the insignia featuring the original Confederate flag...??? And, re: your comment, <<The apparent effort by Senator Jesse Helms to continue his small UDC effort to HONOR our SOUTHERN HEROES was unfortunately spurned by apathy.>>...perhaps I should have included in my original post, the final paragraph in the A/P article: "Moseley-Braun called it a cruel reminder that blacks were once "human chattel" in America". If the "spurning" was related to Moseley-Braun's interest, I would hardly call that "apathy"??? As an objective bystander, may I comment that there appears to be more than one viewpoint on the subject??? The specific UDC insignia includes the "Stars and Bars" Official Confederate States of America Government Flag which was chosen in lieu of the Battle Flag in order to not offend any persons. The apparent effort by Senator Jesse Helms to continue this small UDC effort to HONOR our SOUTHERN HEROES was unfortunately spurned by apathy. No action to spurn the effort of individual organizations to HONOR our SOUTHERN HEROES can be legitimately characterized as "successful" until the Freedom of the RIGHT to CHOOSE "NEW SENATORS and REPRESENTATIVES" is successfully rejected and abolished! God Bless our Honorable United States Senator Jesse Helms and the LADIES of the United Daughters of the CONFEDRACY! Best regards, Great-great Grandson of Private Elias Fairfax 36th Regiment, 2nd Co. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) and Carol Moseley-Braun, Illinois democrat and nation's first black female senator, nominated for ambassador to New Zealand. The following paragraph is a quote: "In the Senate, she (Moseley-Braun) led a successful effort to reject legislation by Helms that would have granted the United Daughters of the Confederacy a renewed patent on an insignia featuring the original Confederate flag." I thought this was interesting, and wondered if anyone knew more on the subject, including the "United Daughters of the Confederacy". Would anyone care to comment?
