    3. Kerry, Information regarding the United Daughters of the Confederacy can be found at their website at http://www.hqudc.org/ Essentially, this is an organization for women descended from men or women who served the Confederate States of America, either in some military or other official capacity. These are generally descendents of Confederate veterans but service also includes those who served as nurses, provided material aid, or served in some governmental capacity. Essentially, it is a lineage organization much like the DAR and requires documentation and proofs on each generation from the ancestor down to the prospective member. The United Daughters of the Confederacy was an outgrowth of the many Ladies Memorial and Aid Societies that sprang up all over the South following the War to assist not only the disabled and homeless veterans but families, and any other victims of the conflict, or others in any kind of need, and they still award many thousands of dollars in educational scholarships, preserve and maintain historic sites, libraries, and museums, perform thousands of hours of volunteer service to VA hospitals and other veterans facilities, erect historic markers, do cemetery work, etc. Many of the battlefields and other historic sites were purchased and maintained by the UDC organization after the War and have since been turned over to the various federal and state park services. Ever since their original charter was issued over a hundred years ago, the UDC was awarded the special honor of having their official insignia patent renewed each year by Congress. The insignia in question can be seen on the main page of their web page and contains an emblem of the First National Flag of the Confederacy (official governmental flag), NOT the Confederate Battle Flag that is so often used and abused by the KKK and other hate groups. Former Senator Carol Moseley-Braun decided that the UDC and their emblem were racist, radical, and personally offensive to her and to other African-Americans and mounted an ultimately successful campaign to no longer issue the patent. The patent is still issued by another governmental entity and the only significance in the whole flap was that Moseley-Braun won what she considered to be a moral victory. Although Senator Helms, and many other senators, spoke out against Moseley-Braun's stance on the UDC, Senator Helms main complaint with Moseley-Braun now has to do with the many allegations of misuse and abuse of funds and other questionable acts and clouds of scandal that arose during her term and has nothing, technically, to do with the UDC issue. She was not re-elected to Congress but now seeks an appointment as an official U.S. ambassador. Senator Helms is opposed to her appointment, as I understand it, due to the plethora of allegations regarding her ethical conduct during her term of office in the Senate, but they have, in reality, been enemies ever since the old UDC dispute. Sorry to be so long winded but not many people were aware of this issue and it takes some explaining to get the whole picture.
