    1. [SCHORRY-L] Question on Barnhill Family
    2. Dianne Moore
    3. Hi group, I've have a question on Alexander Barnhill which I hope someone can help me answer. I am, like lots of others on this list, descended from Joseph/Josiah and Narcissa Jones Barnhill. I'm trying to clear up some questions on the Barnhill's that I have in my database, even on those to whom I'm not directly descended. The 1850 Horry County Census shows: Barnhill, Alex, 25, M, W, SC; Susanah, 28, F, SC; Wade, 12, M, SC; Alex, 8, M, SC Susann (?), 6, F, SC; ?, 1, M, SC The 1860 Horry County census shows: Barnhill, Alexander, 39, M, SC; Susan, 40, F, SC; Wade, 19, M, SC; A. W., 16, M, SC; Nancy, 13, F, SC; Dorcas, 10, F, SC; Eliza A., 6, F, SC; Parker, Sarah A., 6, F, SC. The 1880 Horry County census shows: Barnhill, Alexander, W, M, 60; Sarah, B, F, 35; Ellen J., MU, F, 11; William H., MU, M, 9; Marion, MU, M, 6; Queen V., MU, F, 4; no name, MU, F, 2 It appears that, if the Alexander in the 1880 census is the same Alex in the 1850 and 1860 census, that Susan may have died before 1869 since the oldest child of the 1880 census record was born about 1869. It also appears that Alexander may have fathered these children by a black woman who may or may not have been a former slave. It is unknown whether these were actually born under wedlock or not but they did carry the Barnhill name, showing that Alexander did acknowledge them and they did live in his household. I have not reviewed the 1870 Horry census information yet because I haven't been able to find my copy (although I know I did it and it's hiding somewhere in my basement). But, unless the Alexander who had married Susan/Susanah had died before the 1880 census, I can find no other Alexander which would or could be this Alexander. Anyway, my question is....is the conclusion I've come to correct? Does anyone have any information on this Alexander Barnhill who could assist me in determining whether he did have a second family after the one with Susan/Susanah? I would appreciate any information anyone would be willing to share about this Barnhill. Thanks in advance. I do appreciate all the help ya'll give on this list. Dianne Moore Further research needs to be done in order to verify this possibility.
