    2. PAWLEYS ISLAND - James Stuart Chandler, Jr., 60, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Mr. Chandler was born in Conway on December 4, 1949, a son of the late James Stuart Chandler and Sara May McKinney Chandler. He attended Georgetown County schools and graduated from Winyah High School in 1968. Mr. Chandler graduated in 1972 from Davidson College with a B. A. in Economics and received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1973. Mr. Chandler received his Law degree from the University of South Carolina in 1977. He married Rebecca McCarthy in 1976. Mr. Chandler returned to Georgetown County where he was an environmental attorney and founder and President of the S. C. Environmental Law Project (S.C.E.L.P.). Mr. Chandler was a member of the Sierra Club and the League of Women Voters. During his career he was awarded the Sierra Club's 'William O. Douglas Award', the S. C. General Assembly's 'Environmental Awareness Award', and the S. C. Wildlife Federations' 'Conservationist of the Year Award'. Mr. Chandler was fully dedicated to his family, his passion for the protection of the environment, and his participation in a local band. Mr. Chandler was predeceased by a brother, Wayne McKinney Chandler. Surviving are: his wife Rebecca McCarthy Chandler of Pawleys Island; a daughter, Leigh Caroline Chandler of Pawleys Island; two sisters, Sara Ann Chandler Hooks (Jim) of Pawleys Island and Lucile Chandler Cook (Rodney) of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Michael McCarthy (Linda) of Kingston, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at two o'clock in Georgetown Presbyterian Church. There will be a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall following the service.     2. Cherrie Elvington Atkinson died July 24th, 2010, at the age of 89 in Myrtle Beach. She was born February 28, 1921 in Lake View, S.C. to William Watson and Lenora Elvington. Marion, S.C. was her home as a young wife and mother before she made a career in real estate in West Columbia, S.C. Her generosity to her family, clients, and friends brought her admiration, love, and success. She built Cherrie Atkinson Realty on honesty and strong work ethics. Many called her "Aunt Cherrie" or "Miss Cherrie." She is survived by her daughter, Judith Porter of Atlanta, son; Richard Atkinson of Myrtle Beach, sister; Florence Howell of Charlotte, and two grandchildren; Karen Patton in The Woodlands, Texas, and Russell Atkinson in Madison, Miss.; as well as many close nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2010 in the sanctuary of Providence Presbyterian Church located at 1112 Hummingbird Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169 with Pastor Michael T. Bragen officiating. Visitation for Mrs. Atkinson will be from noon until the time of service in the church fellowship hall.     2. Martha Mildred "Bill" Coats, age 78, of Hwy. 19, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 7, 2010. "Aunt Bill" was born in Loris, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Osbie and Martha Gerald Coats. She was a member of Kingston Baptist Church and was a former member of Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church in Loris. "Aunt Bill" loved rocking her baby dolls, reading her Bible and going to church. The family would like to thank the Doctors and staff of Loris Extended Care Center for their loving care of Martha "Bill" Coats. Surviving are one brother, Osbie E. Coats and his wife, Carolyn, of Loris; and one sister, Gladys Lilly and her husband, Claude, of Conway; two nieces, Loretta Hucks and her husband, David, and Phyllis Rhye and her husband, Randy; one nephew, David E. Coats; and a special great niece, Christy Thompson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 9, 2010 at Kingston Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Black and Rev. Rocky Gregory officiating.     2. Frances Marian Powell Hardwick peacefully passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Homer Cleveland and Sallie Hamilton Powell, Mrs. Hardwick was graduated from Conway High School and was an alumna of Winthrop College. She was employed by the South Carolina School System for over thirty years where she taught all grades from first through eighth using her love for Literature and Social Studies to leave her indelible mark on thousands of students. Frances Marian also served as a school librarian as well as an assistant principal and principal. Her interest and commitment to education resulted in her selection for membership in Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority of women educators. She was a lifelong member of Maple Baptist Church where she was active in many various capacities including Vacation Bible School, the Beautification Committee, the Social Committee, the Young Peoples Department Chairman, the College Student Communication Coordinator, and the Sallie Powell Women's Missionary Union Ladies Circle. Surviving are her husband of fifty-eight years, L. Brice Hardwick, her daughter, Julie Ann Hardwick, her son, Jeffrey Bryce Hardwick, and her sister, Geneva "Ginny" Powell Hendrick (Mrs. Robert L.), all of Conway. Mrs. Hardwick is also survived by five nieces and one nephew, Sallye Beth Brown Prince (Mrs. E. E. Prince, Jr.), Linda Powell Hendrick, Betty Hendrick Coggeshall (Mrs. William Coggeshall), Libby Hendrick Stroman (Mrs. Ralph Stroman), and Karen Hardwick Lewis (Mrs. Wendall Lewis), and Gregg M. Hardwick (Kathy). Other family members left with special memories of Mrs. Hardwick include Russell Sidney Johnson (Kristi), Matthew Gene Johnson (Beth), Bryan Charles Coggeshall (Anna), Kyle Michael Hardwick, Kory McNeal Hardwick, Master William Russell Johnson, Miss Sidney Michelle Johnson, and Master Matthew Gene Johnson, Jr. Close family friends and caregivers Steven Grissett, Eloise Hunt, Elizabeth Jordan, Catherine Davis, the late Mary Jenkins, and her exceptional 24-hour protector/companion/nursemaid, Caroline the Black Labrador, will long continue to celebrate her cherished memory. Mrs. Hardwick was preceded in death by her dear sister, Leona Powell Brown (Mrs. Sidney D. Brown) and her beloved canine companion of sixteen years, Samson.     1. [SCHORRY] David Sherwood Nye, Jr. (Jimmie)
    2. David Sherwood Nye, Jr. (Jimmie) age 83, peacefully passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 surrounded by his loving family and friends. The son of the late David Sherwood Nye, Sr. and Alice Anne Louise McMillan Nye, Jimmie was born in Mullins, SC on April 22, 1927. Jimmie graduated from Conway High School in 1943, attended the University of SC, and served in the United States Navy. "Dr. Jimmie" was longtime owner and operator of Nye's Pharmacy. In 1928, Jimmie's father, Sherwood Nye, and his uncle Bruce Nye came to Conway and opened Nye's Pharmacy A faithful lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Conway, he enjoyed the Angler Sunday School Class and Baptist Men. Jimmie was compassionate, generous, and kind in helping those in their time of need both professionally and personally, influencing all in a positive manner. Mentor to all who worked at Nye's pharmacy, he gave many young people their first job opportunity and was a friend to all Conway teenagers who frequented Nye's to "hang out." Jimmie, affectionately called "Pop" by his family, was a true Southern gentlemen, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, companion, and friend. He enjoyed boating, fishing, woodworking, gardening, and people. Passionate about Murrell's Inlet, the Waccamaw River and Smith Lake, he often reminisced fondly of enjoying house parties at Nyoka, rowing his boat from Conway to Cox's Ferry Lake, swimming with the boys at Tarzan's Cabin in Smith Lake, and roller skating all over Conway, even skating on a frozen Smith Lake one winter. His Murrells's Inlet home, Nyoka was always open for his friends and family to visit and fellowship. Dr. Jimmie will always be remembered for touching the lives of customers and friends through his generosity. Jimmie loved his coffee club and enjoyed spending time at Donzelle's and Pulley Bones. A charter member of the Conway Wellness and Fitness Center, he enjoyed exercising, socializing with his water aerobic buddies, and meeting new friends. An honorary member of the Conway High School class of 1944, he rekindled and enjoyed old friendships as they met monthly "class reunions." Jimmie was predeceased by his wife of forty-two years, Mary Joyce Hosse Nye. He is survived by his longtime companion Janet Parker Gochenour of Conway. Surviving are his loving children, daughter Ruth Anne Nye Sanford and husband Jeffrey Ray Sanford of Sumter; his son David Sherwood Nye, III, and wife Phyllis Johnson Nye of Conway; and daughter Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Nye Zirkle and husband Thomas Bruce Zirkle of Myrtle Beach. His devoted grandchildren are Elizabeth Nye Bradford, Matthew James Bradford, Anna Louise Sanford, David Sherwood Nye, IV, Richard Edward Bailey, Jr., and Camilla Johnson Nye. Surviving are sister Mary Louise Nye Holley of Aiken; brother Francis Leonard Nye of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and special cousin, Mary Katherine Nye Keith of Gastonia, NC. The family would like to extend gratitude and appreciation to all of the staff of Kingston Nursing Center and Mercy Hospice for their love, kindness, and care; and to all friends who called, visited, and prayed for our family during Jimmie's illness. Lewis and the late Hattie Todd Lewis. She was a homemaker and a member of the Waccamaw Baptist Church. Mrs. Stalvey was predeceased by her husband, Lewis J. Stalvey, Sr.; three sons, Marsdon Stalvey, L. J. Stalvey, Jr. and Dargain Stalvey; several brothers and sisters; and a granddaughter, Michelle Triplett.     2. Mrs. Earline Bellamy Shaw, age 89, formerly of Longs, passed away Monday, August 2, 2010 following an illness. Mrs. Shaw was born March 8, 1921 in Conway, a daughter of the late Hiram Bellamy and the late Ruth Gore Bellamy. She worked at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base for 32 years retiring in 1980. Mrs. Shaw was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church in Columbia. She was a loving mother and wife. Mrs. Shaw was predeceased by her husband, Laing Shaw, and one son, Gilbert Laing Shaw, III. Survivors include one daughter, Gloria Shaw of Columbia, one son, Colin "Bootsie" Shaw of Columbia, and two grandchildren, Colin Murray Shaw of Charleston and Jennifer Jane Shaw of Los Angeles, California.     2. FLORENCE - William Trapier Goldfinch, age 73, died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at McLeod Health in Florence, SC. Mr. Goldfinch was born in Conway, SC on February 11, 1937. The youngest child of Jewell Vernon Pepper Goldfinch and Art-hur Kelly Goldfinch, Sr. He was predeceased by his brother Arthur Kelly Goldfinch, Jr. and his sisters, Helen Vernon G. Oliver and Elizabeth G. Stalvey Singleton. Mr. Goldfinch was a graduate of Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law. At one time he practiced law in Conway, and was a vice president and trust officer of Guaranty Bank & Trust Co. in Florence, SC, and also Southern Bank & Trust Co. in Florence. He served in the SC National Guard and US Air Force Reserves. Mr. Goldfinch was active in the Pee Dee Area Chapter of the March of Dimes for several years. He was a member of and a past treasurer of The Darlington County Historical Society and a member of and warden in the Saint David's Society. Mr. Goldfinch was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Conway, SC. He had lived in Florence, Hartsville and Darlington from 1968 until present. Survived by his sister, Jewell Claire Goldfinch Riggs of Gastonia, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. A Private graveside service was held at Lakeside Cemetery in Conway.     2. Miss Ruby Hardee, age 80, of Highway 905 South, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 1, 2010. She was born July 25, 1930 in Longs, a daughter of the late William Franklin Hardee and the late Isla Lee Hardee Matthews. She was the stepdaughter of the late Robert J. Matthews. Miss Hardee graduated from Loris High School and attended Horry - Georgetown Technical College. She was an active member of Buck Creek Baptist Church and was previously a member of North Conway Baptist Church for 44 years where she was actively involved in the choir, a Sunday school teacher, and served on various committees. Miss Hardee was the past president and member of the Conway Business and Professional Women's Club, served as past chairman and member of the Horry County Commission of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, served on the Board of the American Heart Association, a volunteer for the American Red Cross and was also involved in many other local civic and charity organizations and fund raisers. She was also a member of the National Association of Federal and Retired Employees after serving 34 years with the Selective Service System and the Social Security Administration in Conway. Miss Hardee is survived by five sisters, Willie H. Carter of Longs, Opal H. Allen of Melbourne, Fla., Ernestine H. Stone of Irmo, Fannie Rabon and her husband, Hinson, of Longs, Linda M. Campbell and her husband, Ravenell, of Florence; two brothers, Billy J. Matthews, Sr. and his wife, Vickie, and Tommy Matthews and his wife, Pat, all of Longs; a sister-in-law, Daisy Matthews of West Palm Beach, Fla.; 13 nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and nephews; and 8 great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, Conrad Matthews and one niece, Cindi Matthews. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 3, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Ward Funeral Home in Loris and at other times at the residence of the brother: Billy J. Matthews, Sr. and the nephew: Billy J. Mrs. Gore was born in Conway, SC, a daughter of the late Doc and Belle Barnhill Spivey. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church. Prior to retirement, she was employed by Aberdeen Manufacturing. Mrs. Gore was predeceased by one son, Leon Gore, Jr.; and five brothers, Larue Spivey, Lloyd Spivey, Johnny Spivey, Ashley Spivey, and Willie Spivey.     2. Mrs. Hazel Muriel Floyd Bellamy, age 85, died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Loris Extended Care Facility following an illness. Born September 13, 1924 in Green Sea, SC to Mr. Gutha Lee Floyd and Mrs. Minnie Jane Johnson Floyd. Mrs. Bellamy worked as an operator with Southern Bell and retired from the Horry School District. She was a lifetime member of The Loris Garden Club and a longtime, very active member of Green Sea Baptist Church where she served in numerous capacities. Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by two brothers, Bliss Lee and Ford Lee; and a sister, Virginia Mishoe. Mr. Lewis was born in Little River, the fifth of nine children born to the late Warren and Rosa Carroll Lewis. He was a skilled carpenter and master gardener, with over 30 years experience in the restaurant business. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by a son, Carroll Lewis. Born July 12, 1921 in Loris, SC she was the daughter of Mr. Fernnie Lewis and Mrs. Janie Elliott Lewis. Mrs. Williams retired after forty-three years with Horry County Food Services and she was a longtime member of Loris First Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother who will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking. Survivors include her son: Ernest Williams and wife, Betty of North Charleston, SC; her daughter: Alice Gerald and husband, L.C. of Myrtle Beach, SC; her son-in-law: Billy Blackburn of Loris, SC; daughter-in-law: Judy Williams; five grandchildren: Cindy Williams Rhodes, Kim Williams Epps, Jennifer Williams, Eddy Blackburn and Chad Gerald; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one niece and two nephews. Harrelson had served as pastor of Spring Hill Baptist Church in Cottageville, SC, Corinth Baptist Church in Oxford, NC, Salem Baptist Church in Aynor, SC, and Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Florence, SC. He also served as interim pastor of North Mullins Baptist Church in Mullins, SC, Cane Branch Baptist Church in Loris, SC, Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Loris, SC and Aynor First Baptist Church in Aynor, SC. Rev. Harrelson was a member of Juniper Bay Baptist Church. He was a US Army veteran. Rev. Harrelson was a graduate of the Baptist College at Charleston in Charleston, SC and Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He was a member of Graddy Masonic Lodge in Aynor, SC and was a former member of the Aynor Lion's Club.
