Julia Ann H. Roberts, 50, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach. Julia was born November 16, 1959 in Conway, and was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Bromell Hill. She was also predeceased by four brothers, Ralph Hill, Walter Hill, Jr., James Albert Hill and Jerry Lee Hill. Surviving are her husband, Jeffrey W. Roberts of Myrtle Beach; two brothers, LeVern Hill and his wife, Margree, of Conway, Kent Smith and his wife, Gloria, of Conway; three sisters, Mary Alice Benning, Alberta Sarvis, and Phyllis Moses, all of Conway; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Joseph Cranston Hucks, 82 died Monday September 20, 2010 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born April 14, 1928, a native of Horry County, beloved son of the late Rev. J.A. Hucks, Sr. and Hattie Jordan Hucks. His son, Joseph Charles Hucks, a sister, Evelyn Churchill, three brothers, Jennings Hucks, Bobby Joe Hucks and Paul David Hucks, all predeceased him. Mr. Hucks was an independent general contractor and real estate developer. He was a pioneer in the early development of Myrtle Beach. He was a man that worked behind the scenes and preferred to wait for his rewards as accolades in Heaven. He enjoyed humor, music, playing his spoons, genealogy and spending time with his family. He was loved greatly by his family and friends and helped them all that he could. All will miss his wisdom and presence. He was a member of Trinity Mission Church in Conway, SC. James Quincey "Sonny" Graham, III, age 61, died Friday evening, September 17, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Charleston following an illness. Born December 31, 1948 in Loris, SC he was the son of Mr. James Q. Graham Jr. and the late Mrs. Susan Edwards Graham. Mr. Graham served his country with courage and honor as a US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, was a member of the V.F.W. in Tabor City, NC., and the Loris First United Methodist Church. Cora Grainger Stevens, 91, formerly of Loris, S.C., died Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Heartfields Assisted Living of Cary following an illness. Born January 1, 1919, in Green Sea, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Mr. Alva Emory Grainger and the late Essie Magnolia Harrelson Grainger. Mrs. Stevens attended Wingate College where she was crowned Miss Wingate in 1941. She went on to complete her bachelors at the University of South Carolina. After graduation Mrs. Stevens taught school for 37 years, many of those years at Daisy, receiving her masters during that time. She was a longtime member of Loris First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years, and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors include her three sons; Keith Brooklyn Stevens and wife, Gloria, Bryan Stevens and wife, Gail, all of Cary, N.C., and Bruce Stevens and wife, Donna of Camden, S.C.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stevens was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Burvie Brooklyn Stevens; three brothers, Sherwood Grainger, Braxton Grainger and Autman Grainger; and three sisters, Alpha Prince, Esther Stevens and Lillian Hunt. Hazel Lee Chestnut Miller, age 65, of 14th Avenue passed away Saturday morning, September 18, 2010 at Loris Community Hospital following an illness. Mrs. Miller was born November 1, 1944 in Loris, a daughter of the late Homer Colell Chestnut and the late Lenola Register Chestnut. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith. Mrs. Chestnut was predeceased by her two brothers: Homer Coleman Chestnut and Homer Tyson Chestnut, Sr. Mrs. Miller's first husband, John Thelton Chestnut passed away in 1969 and she worked very hard to raise her children on her own and was a very devoted and loving mother. She later remarried and was a faithful and loving sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. RALEIGH, NC - Oakley LeGrande Herring, 82, of Raleigh died Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Rex Hospital. He was born on December 27, 1927 in Conway, SC, and was the son of the late William P. and Maggie Herring. Oak attended Conway Public Schools, and the University of South Carolina from 1955-1959. While at USC he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a Merchant Marine, and also in the Korean War serving in the US Air Force. For more than 40 years he worked for the Central Oil Asphalt Co. Oak was fondly known as 'Mr. Oakwood'. He had a great love and passion for the preservation of the Historic Oakwood neighborhood of Raleigh. He served for two years as President of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood, and later served for two years with the North Carolina Victorian Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jodie Herring and five siblings. Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Donna Colman Harper Herring of Raleigh; his four children, Milena Herring, Stephen Herring, Lisa Cantrell, and Holly Dunkin; two stepchildren, Laura Colman Harper and Joseph Stanway Harper; a sister, May Cutler; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary D. "Buddy" Gause passed away September 13, 2010 at Grand Strand Hospital. Born in Conway, S.C., Buddy was a lifetime resident of Myrtle Beach. Buddy was an avid participant in the Boy Scouts of America, where he encouraged the growth and development of his son. His love of family, animals, and gardening were unsurpassed. Buddy could be found in his yard tending to his garden, or at the opening of a hot grill cooking up a storm. Although he faced many struggles in his life, his strength was an inspiration to everyone he met. Buddy was no stranger to hardship and strife, and he was and still is an embodiment of perseverance. He is survived by his wife of the home, Lenna D. Gause; his ex-wife, Shirley R. Stone of Conway; his son, Corporal Christopher Q. Stone of Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., and his wife, Melissa D. Stone; two step sons, Benjamin Boeck and his wife, Jessica, and their son, Jacob, of North Carolina; his mother, Reann Collins of Murrells Inlet; his sister, Donna Underwood and her husband, Earl, and their twin daughters Alexandra and Alexis, all of North Carolina; his brother, Terry Gause and wife, Pam, and son, Derek and daughter, Tara; and great-niece, Reagan, all of Columbia. WHITE ROCK - Mamie Lee Howle Curley, 84, passed away Friday, Sept-ember 10, 2010 in White Rock, SC. Mrs. Curley was born in Darlington, SC one of eight children of the late John Newton and Letha Hoffman Howle. Mrs. Curley served in the United States Army during World War II. She was a former employee of the Dixie Cup Plant in Darl-ington, SC in 1959, she met and married Henry F. Curley, now deceased, and moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC where she became very involved in her husband's Plumbing and Electric Company. She spent many hours on the salt water marshes of Cherry Grove Beach boating, fishing, crabbing and enjoying the water. In their retirement, Mrs. Curley went back to classes and became a certified trainer in porcelain doll making. She spent many hours making dolls that were shared with many of her friends and family. Mrs. Curley was a member of Bible Fellowship Baptist Church in Little River, SC. Mrs. Curley is survived by her son, Charles David Truett and his wife, Janice and daughter, Mary Lee Cashwell Geist and her husband, Harold; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was born November 17, 1956 to Howard and Jean Hughes of Conway. Joe was a quiet, strong man of few words, but many kind deeds. He was employed for 18 years with Combraco Industries. Joe worked several years with Grand Strand Water & Sewer. He was also a brick mason. Joe had a very strong faith in God which sustained him through his most difficult life struggle. His greatest love was his family. Surviving in addition to his parents of Conway are his loving wife of 26 years, Rita J. Hughes, who stood by him faithfully. He is also survived by one loving daughter, Kimberly H. Smith (Bill); six grandsons whom he adored, Elijah, Ezra, Simon, Sebastian, Zachary, and Blake Smith, all of Conway; two brothers, Dexter Hughes (Trish) and Alvin Hughes (Reina), all of Conway; and many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Mt. Ariel Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Timmy Locklear officiating. Minnie C. Hedin, 74, wife of the late Einar Hedin, of the Homewood section of Horry County died Sunday, September 12, 2010. Mrs. Hedin was born in Conway, S.C., a daughter of the late Clyde M. and Letha Graham Cook. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Bourne; a grandson, Shane Martin; and a brother, Emory Cook. Survivors include one son, David Hedin of Conway; three daughters Linda Bourne Perry of Murrells Inlet, Faith Bourne Caulder of Conway and Hope Hedin Edwards of Newport News, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Nobles of Lancaster, S.C., and Milda Huggins of Aynor, S.C. ORANGEBURG - Dorothy Fennell Harper, 86, died Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Lexington Assisted Living. Graveside Service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Jud Jordan officiating. Mrs. Harper was born in Loris, SC a daughter of the late Mosley Frierson and Eva Mae Bellamy Fennell. Mrs. Harper was a graduate of St. Andrews College in Laurinsburg, NC, and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics and Science in 1945. She worked as an Assistant Home Demonstration Agent from 1945-46 in West Jefferson, NC, from 1946-48 in Lancaster,SC, and in 1949 in Kaufman, TX, as a County Home Demonstration Agent. Dorothy taught in the Orangeburg City School System beginning in 1958, and retired in 1984. She was a member of the National Education Association, the SC Education Association, and the Orangeburg County Education Association. Mrs. Harper was a member of the Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of South Carolina since 1969. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Orangeburg. Mrs. Harper was the widow of William Edgar Harper. Survivors: Daughter: Dr. and Mrs. Darrell ( Cynthia ) H. Shelva Jean Coleman Young, 72, of Florence, died Thursday, September 9, 2010 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Mrs. Young was born in Latta, SC a daughter of Emma Louise Shelley Coleman and the late Harold Coleman, Sr. She was a graduate of Latta High School and Anderson College and had worked in the Florence District One Schools. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 45 years and a member of Grace Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her father and by her husband, William Edward "Bill" Young, Sr., who died December 25, 2008. Surviving are her mother of Latta; sons, Eddie (Sherry) Young of Newnan, GA and Keith (Glenda) Young of Florence; grandchildren, Candace Holloman of Florence, Jewel Young and Savanna Young, both of Newnan, GA; brother, Harold (Sylvia) Coleman, Jr. of Marion; sisters, Joyce (Terry) Kennedy of Pamplico, Gayle (Carl) Edwards of Latta, SC and Nancy (Roger) Reece of Murrells Inlet and a number of nieces and nephews.
