    1. [SCHORRY] S.F. Horton
    2. LORIS, SC - Mr. S.F. Horton, 99, of Loris, a mighty Tiger, family man, and Civic Leader, was called home on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, and with his death, truly an era has ended. Mr. Horton was best known for his many stories about Clemson and his grandchildren. Once it was told he was out of town and stopped at the local bank to cash a $2,000.00 tobacco check. When asked for identification, he pulled out his wallet and showed the teller pictures of his eight grandchildren (to whom he was "Daddy Horty") - the check was cashed. Mr. Horton was born June 5, 1911, in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, to Lewis S. Horton, Sr., and Ethel Gregory Horton. S.F. was the third of nine children who grew up in the rural sand hills and was taught the value of hard work, the land, and a good education. After graduating from Jefferson High School in 1928, S.F. Horton enrolled at Clemson College where he earned a double major in Animal Husbandry and Agriculture Education. His world was broadened and those years at his beloved Clemson became the corner stone and guiding force though out his adult life. In 1932, Mr. Horton became an agricultural teacher, and later was credited with having sent more students to Clemson to major in agriculture than any other teacher in the state. In 1982 Mr. Horton received the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Clemson, and in 1989 he was recognized as one of the Agriculture department's top 100 graduates in its centennial year. He was most proud. Mr. Horton moved to Loris in 1933 and taught agriculture until 1946 when he went to work for H.C. Lewis in his farm supply business, soon known as Lewis-Horton Supply Company. Later he became a partner in Lewis Tobacco Warehouse. He farmed extensively, raising certified seed for Coker Seed Company, beef cattle, corn, soybeans, and tobacco, and was a tremendous influence on farmers in Horry County, many of whom were his former students. He was a member of the South Carolina Seedman's Association and the historic Pendleton Farmer's Society. In Loris Mr. Horton met and married the love of his life, Rebecca Cook. They were married for 67 years before her death in 2003 and it was in Loris that they raised their three children. Mr. Horton was a member of the Loris Baptist Church for seventy-seven years where he served in many capacities. Mr. Horton was also very involved in his community. He was a founding member of the Civitan Club, original Board Member of the Loris Community Hospital, on which he served for 23 years and helped establish the Loris Nursing Home, and was an initial Director of the Horry County National Bank (later, Southern National Bank and BB&T) serving 40 consecutive years without missing a board meeting. He was also a member of Loris Masonic Lodge #205 where he gave the Third Degree lecture by heart for over 50 years. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Cook Horton, and his son, Dr. S.F. Horton, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Jean Horton Locke of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and her husband, Joel, and his son, Lewis Samuel Horton, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and his wife, Frances, his eight grandchildren, David Horton, Sarah Horton Owen, Leslie Locke Craft, John Horton Locke, Stephen Locke, Michael Locke, Gregory Horton and Joseph Horton, and fifteen great-grandchildren, Abigail Owen, Hayden Owen, Rebecca Warner, Heather Warner, Elizabeth Locke, J.T. Locke, Caroline Locke, Sidney Grace Locke, Addison Locke, Sawyer Locke, Anne Gregory Horton, Zella Horton, Samuel Horton, Fields Horton, and Hyder Horton and two step-great-grandchildren, Eli Freireich and Isabelle Freireich. Mr. Horton lived fully, verbosely, lovingly and he did it his own way. One never forgot his stories, because he told them to you over, and over, and over again; and he had a knack for shifting the focus of any conversation in the direction he wanted by making any association, however remote, between what had been said and the matter he wanted to discuss, or story he wanted to tell, by simply introducing his subject with the phrase "talking 'bout", and off he would go - he shall be missed. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, October 4, 2010 at Loris First Baptist Church. Visitation will be Sunday, October 3, 2010 from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at Hardwick Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Loris First Baptist Church - Capital Improvement Fund, 3117 Main St., Loris, SC 29569 or Clemson Memorial Carillon Endowment Fund, 110 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29631 or to Mercy Hospice Palliative Care, PO Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579.
