    3. There is a possiblity that the SCGenWeb will in the near future not recognize the Horry County Historical Society site as its official Horry County SCGenWeb site. It seems as though we are in violation of some of their guidelines. We are trying to resolve the issue but it appears that the two cannot be one in the same. If you have contributed to this site any materials that you do not wish to be displayed on the Horry County Historical Society's site if it were not associated with the SCGenWeb, please let me know. Have a great day! :) Craig Smith <>< Webmaster for Horry County Historical Society http://www.hchsonline.org/ City Athletics, an athletic footwear specialty store in Conway, SC, is proud to host the following sites: 1) City Athletics Online Classified *Place free online classified ads* http://www.cityathletics.com/classified/ 2) Rivertown Community Church *A warm & friendly place to worship* http://www.cityathletics.com/rivertown/ 3) Seaside Emmaus *Coastal SC Walk to Emmaus Community* http://www.cityathletics.com/seaside/ 4) Kimmy's Homepage *My daughter's site* http://www.cityathletics.com/kimmy/

    1. [SCHORRY-L] Possible misunderstandings about Sale of Grave Markers
    2. Ricks
    3. I have received notification of the sale of grave markers on Ebay from many people and I have a suggestion. Before we flood Ebay and everybody else with our ill will, let me remind you all from a law enforcement point of view, I am a police officer, that most of these grave markers were provided by the government to the deceased family and as the families could afford better headstones, many of the small metal markers were removed, and I imagine, stored in an attic, to later be sold in estate auctions, etc. Also, if a soldier was entombed in a mausoleum, or cremated, the markers were given to the family since they were never even used . Also many time as families became financially more secure, they replaced tombstones with better and more expensive markers. We definitely don't need to jump the gun and accuse people of stealing grave markers or being in possession of stolen property unless we can prove it. That in itself could very well land some of you in civil court with hefty attorney fees. The sale of these grave markers has never bothered me as much as authenticated relics that are advertised as coming from particular battlefields. This is done all the time and all those battlefields are National Memorials and how did they get anything from there? Please be very careful in accusing people of robbing graves and stealing markers. If these markers were obtained legitimately, they have every right to profit from them, no matter how morally wrong it may be. Please remind everyone on your list of these thoughts before they act in haste. 1. [SCHORRY-L] The Trials of Edmund Bigham
    2. Craig Smith
    3. Date: Tuesday, May 04, 1999 Category: Places & Things Document: The Trials of Edmund Bigham Source: Files of Catherine H. Lewis The Trials of Edmund Bigham Files of Catherine H. Lewis South Carolina tried Edmund Bigham three times in the 1920s for the murder of his mother (Dora), his brother (Smiley III), his sister (Mrs. Marjorie McCrackin), and his sister's two children. The last two trials were held at the present courthouse in Conway. No trial ever held in Horry County have generated more interest over a longer period. Two books (The Last of the Bighams by J. A. Zeigler and A Piece of the Fox's Hide, by Katherine Boling) recount this bizarre story. It has also been the subject of many newspaper and magazine articles and several television programs. Events which led up to and followed the murders in 1921 span several generations. The Bighams were a prominent family in old Marion County, the part that is now in Florence County. Florence elected one of them, Smiley, Jr., the first state senator from the new county. If we concentrate only on the events that occurred in the senator's family, we begin with the senator’ s death in May 1908. There was a suspicion in the community that his wife, Dora, had done him in with poison. The community whispered horrendous stories about the treatment of family servants, including the murder of one young boy by driving a nail into his ear. Smiley was indicted for this crime. His trial was scheduled for October 1909. On September 9, 1909, a month before trial was to begin the Horry Herald reported the death Ruth Bigham, the senator's daughter-in-law, wife of Dr. G. Cleveland Bigham. She was murdered at Murrells Inlet, some said to keep her from testifying in court against Smiley. Blood members of the family tended to mistrust those who came in by marriage. Ruth often wore the long dresses of white or pale colors which were typical of the time. She was fond of strolling along the water's edge in the early evening dusk. According to newspaper accounts, her husband, Dr. G. Cleveland Bigham, persuaded a simple minded man named William Avant that the figure he saw in the gloom was a ghost. William Avant shot and killed the young woman. Dr. Bigham and Avant stood trial for Ruth's murder. Because of the circumstances the jury found them guilty of manslaughter, not murder. After sentencing Cleveland Bigham to three years, the judge released him on bond, pending appeal. When the higher court upheld the verdict, he left the state without serving his sentence. On January 15, 1921 the neighborhood near Pamplico in which the Bighams lived was alerted that something was wrong at the Widow Bigham's house. All about the place lay the bodies of shooting victims. Of the whole household, only Edmund Bigham remained alive. He claimed that, before she succumbed to a wound in the head, his mother had told him his brother had done the murders. Edmund claimed that Smiley had then taken his life. Edmund Bigham's first trial in Florence County began on March 21, 1921. It resulted in a death penalty. A higher court later set aside the verdict and ordered a new trial, not to be held in Florence County. The court judged Bigham could not get a fair jury there. In the October term of court in 1924 Bigham went on trial again in Horry County. Conway, the county seat, took on a carnival atmosphere. Because of his notoriety, seats in the courtroom were in great demand. People came as to a theatrical performance. The trial lacked nothing one might ask in suspense and dramatic events. Bigham declared that officials and all who testified against him would die before he did. He said in court, "They've lied on me, and every one of them will die before I do." Following this one witness had a heart attack and died in the box. In all four would die before the end of the Bigham trials. He called down the wrath of God against his enemies and the rains came--and came. The result was the Bigham flood or freshet, which nearly drowned Conway. During this trial one of the prosecuting attorneys thrust the skull of Dora Bigham toward her son's face and begged him to acknowledge his guilt. Two opposing lawyers engaged in fisticuffs in the courtroom. Again the jury handed out a guilty verdict and the judge sentenced Bigham to be electrocuted. Again the sentence was set aside and a new trial ordered. At the beginning of the third trial the court announced a delay, because of a “delicate and temporary condition.”. Rumor said Bigham's wife was pregnant. A special term of court met on April 4, 1927 for the continuation of the trial. In anticipation of a sensational trial the New York World sent Oliver H. P. Garrett, a special correspondent, to cover the trial. His dispatch to his paper was reprinted in the Horry Herald on April 7, 1927. The postponement [from October term of court] came some weeks ago after country folk from miles around had driven into town in ramshackle Fords, and mule teams to see the man who has become a gigantic symbol of evil throughout the state and as far as the history of the Bighams is known. . . .It didn't need the incident [the death of one witness on the stand] to establish that belief deep in the minds of the simple farmers of this and the neighboring counties.but the last minute postponement added new heights to the nature of mystery, superstition and legend which the Bighams had built about themselves. . . . New converts to the Bigham legend were made in the crowded, stuffy courtroom. Bigham sat, calm and apparently certain of "God's hand," in the railed-in prisoners' dock, facing the judge. Upon the deep lined face of that official, in his black robes, the eyes of the gaping country-men lined about the walls, were fixed. In the little balcony, where the negroes sit, rows of dark fascinated faces peered down. Lawyers gathered around the bench. The defense argued for a change of venue, arguing that “this man cannot obtain a fair and impartial trial in this county.” The judge refused. The New York reporter continued: Bigham’s thick fingers drummed steadily on the railing beside him, but his face, with its overhanging brows and loose chin, never changed expression. His lawyers looked depressed. Suddenly their faces took life. “There are conditions existing new in this case,” said the judge, “of so delicate and curious a nature that they are not even brought out in argument here. To compel the defendant to go to trial during the temporary condition would be harsh, unfair and unnecessary. Therefore I order a special term of court for this trial to be conducted here by this court beginning April 4.” Bigham was smiling faintly. It was the same smile, men say, as that his grandfather, Leonard Smiley Bigham wore in the Marion county court house the day the jury released him, and Edmund’s father, L. Smiley Bigham, 2d, from the charge of the murder of William Jackson, negro. Edmund rose, and shook hands with those who came forward. He was asked how many men he had seen die in the death house since he was first imprisoned there, awaiting electrecution since 1921. Again, a short delay occurred. The crowd of spectators was tense with anticipation of some new dramatic event. Finally the judge came in and announced that Bigham had pleaded guilty in exchange for a sentence of life imprisonment. Suddenly, the courtroom drama was over, but the Bigham story was not. Edmund Bigham did outlive the prosecuting attorneys and the jury. He did not die in prison. In spite of the agreement that ended his trial, Senator Ralph Gasque of Marion succeeded in having Bigham paroled to his custody in 1960. He lived the last two years of his life in Marion. The skull of his mother remained in an evidence box (actually a hatbox) in the Horry County courthouse for many years. A later senator from Florence, Tom Smith, got an injunction to claim it for reburial. Somehow the skull of Dora Bigham passed into private hands for some years before members of the Pamplico community finally buried it in Pamplico on April 14, 1990, more than 69 years after her murder. 1. [SCHORRY-L] Beaty-Worley Farm
    2. Craig Smith
    3. Date: Tuesday, May 04, 1999 Category: Places & Things Document: Beaty-Worley Farm Source: Files of Catherine H. Lewis Beaty-Worley Farm Files of Catherine H. Lewis The Rev. Thomas Akin Beaty was the son of John Beaty III and Elizabeth Mary Prince, daughter of Nicholas Prince. There is a tall monument to him in Kingston Presbyterian Church cemetery which says he was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 25 years. The property in Floyds Township must have been the family home since his widow was buried in the Beaty Cemetery nearby in 1875. Angelina Shaw Beaty, the youngest daughter of Dorcas and Thomas Akin Beaty, who also appears to be buried in the Beaty Cemetery was married to William Henry Buck, a brother of the Henry Buck who settled Bucksport and Bucksville. Why she is buried as a Beaty and not as a Buck, I can't say. One of her two children who died in infancy is memorialized by a beautiful little statue in Kingston Cemetery. It is very similar to the one which memorializes two small daughters of Thomas W. Beaty. None of Angelina's children survived to adulthood. Thomas Akin Beaty (b. 14 Oct 1798, d. 17 Oct 1853) m. Dorcas (Chestnut) Johnson (3 Mar 1791- 12 July 1875) on 13 Feb 1825. Their children: Thomas Wilson Beaty SC Senator, etc., lived in house on Kingston Lake Margaret Dorcas Beaty m. William I. Graham, sheriff of Horry District, lived near Hickory Grove John Robinson Beaty lived in big house corner 6th and Main St., Conway Mary Fletcher Beaty m. Jackson Jones Martha M. Beaty also m. a Jones *James Congdon Beaty m. Melvina Serena Grissette, d/o R. G. W. Grissette. Two of her sisters were married in succession to J. W. Holliday. Annah Beaty d. in infancy Angelina Shaw Beaty m. William Henry Buck, brother of Henry Buck The homes of Thomas Wilson Beaty, John Robinson Beaty, and Margaret Dorcas Beaty Graham were all large structures built by ships carpenters from Maine. James Congdon Beaty (1833- ) inherited the land in Floyds Township from Thomas Akin Beaty. James C. Beaty conveyed the land to his son *Lewis G. Beaty on 28 Oct 1878. In the 1880 Census James C. and his wife were living in Floyds with four children, ages 11-18. I don't know his date of death nor place of burial. Lewis (or Louis) George Beaty, whose firs t wife was Anne Plowden and second wife was Nolie Hughes, lived in Charleston. Although he received this land from his father, he decided to remain in Charleston. He gave power to attorney to his uncle, Thomas W. Beaty, an attorney of Conwayborough, who sold it to Rey Worley on 27 January 1881. The deed, recorded in Horry County Deed Book U, p. 299, conveyed 450 acres for $1100. The land was located north of Lake Swamp and a mile from the Playcard to Nichols Road. It is described as bounded by lands of John Williamson, Noah Shelley, Joseph Beaty, Arnold G. Strickland, Benjamin Mincey, and John S. Elliott. Between 1835 and 1848 Rev. Beaty put together parcels of land on the north side of Lake Swamp which totaled more than 1100 acres. At the same time he was purchasing land in other widely scattered parts of the county. He was also buying and selling slaves. His brother, Col. James S. Beaty who was known as the "King of the Republic," was elected sheriff in December 1833 and served 1834-1838. During his term TAB purchased at the courthouse steps on sales day the following first two parcels. (1) 200 acres which had been seized for debt of $53 owed to Thomas A. Beaty by Penelope Avant. He paid $4 for it. This land was part of a grant to John Lambert made 15 March 1770 and of another grant to Thomas Floyd made 7 June 1802. The Lambert grant would, of course, have been a royal grant because it occurred before the American Revolution. The deed from Sheriff James Beaty to Thomas Akin Beaty was dated 12 Mar 1835. (See Horry County Deed Book, B-1, p. 556.) (2) 509.5 acres on Cartwheel Bay seized from Prudence Johnson (Johnston), deceased. He paid $12 for it. Part of the land was from a grant to Thomas Lloyd dated 7 June 1802 which Prudence Johns(t)on inherited from Samuel Johns(t)on 26 Nov 1824. Another part was from a grant to Samuel Foxworth dated 7 Jul 1794 and another from a grant to to Richard Lewis dated 6 Feb 1815. The deed from Sheriff Beaty to Thomas A. Beaty was dated 18 Jan 1837. (3) On 27 May 1839 Thomas Akin Beaty purchased from Gilbert Johnson 200 acres of land which was originally granted to John Lambert 10 Oct 1769 (pre-Revolution). Gilbert Johnson inherited it as parcel #4 of the estate of his father, Samuel Johnson. (Horry County Deed Book L, p. 421) (4) On 14 Dec 1842 Thomas Akin Beaty purchased 201 acres from Hugh R. Johnson for $75. It is described as the middle portion of a Wm. Hemingway plat of 897 acres made 4 May 1801. (Horry County Deed Book L, p. 422) (5) On 28 August 1848 Thomas Akin Beaty purchased from G. L. Johnson one acre for which he paid $5.00. This land had been granted to Joseph Graham, Sr., and inherited by James Graham. It then passed through the hands of "various persons" to G. L. Johnson. It is described as the land on which G. L. Johnson "now lives". This suggests that the $5.00 purchase included a house which was in existence in 1848. The witnesses to this deed are Sam C. Johnson and Elizabeth Chestnut. (Horry County Deed Book L, p. 423) The last three deeds were finally recorded in Conwayborough in November, 1849. There are a lot of other transactions in Beaty's name, but I have included here all I found described as being on the north side of Lake Swamp. They total 1111.5 acres. If you were to look at the descriptions of these, you could probably determine which were the lands Rey Worley purchased. Since there was always some variations in acreages when land was resurveyed, it may be that two parcels of Lambert land, both pre-Revolutionary War grants and so granted in the name of the king, constituted the 450 acres sold to Rey Worley. This is pure speculation on my part, but would account for the tradition of a royal grant. In 1850 The Rev. John H. Beaty, a brother of Thomas Akin Beaty, was living somewhere close by. He is listed in the Census that year between Abraham King and Alfred Inman. His second wife was the widow Lucy Booth Dorman. Thomas A. Beaty is shown between W. I. Graham and C. E. Ludlam. To further illustrate the connections with prominent families, Thomas Akin Beaty's youngest sister, Mary Harriet, married Timothy Cooper. One of her daughters, Adeline Cooper, married F. G. Burroughs and another, Laura, married B. G. Collins, the principals in the firm of Burroughs & Collins. These women would be first cousins of James C. Beaty, who inherited the Worley farm. R. G. W. Grissette was a SC state senator. Two of his daughters in turn married Joseph W. Holliday of Galivants Ferry. A third married James C. Beaty who inherited the Worley farm. 1. [SCHORRY-L] Martin Cemetary list-how I did it
    2. Wanda Martin
    3. Hey Ya'll, I have heard from some people on the list wanting to know how I put the Martin Cemetary list together. I will be happy to send anyone who wants it a text file of what I have put together to work from (to pull my Martin names out of). That consists of over 90 cemetaries from the Horry site in one big file (360 pages). Yep, there all in one big file and I didn't have to copy and paste each cemetary list separately into one file but I did have to do it in MS-DOS. I believe in the old saying "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach him to fish and he eats as long as the fish are biting" BUT..I'm afraid ya'll will have to go hungry (don't think I know enough about DOS to explain how to do this or help if you get stuck as I'm just learning it myself) so I will just send it to anyone who wants it. Just let me know you want the (allcem.txt) and I will send it as an attachment. Once you get it (if you have WORD) a handy trick is to learn how to spike. Before you start spiking tho make a backup copy of the allcem.txt file. Spiking cuts what you are copying from the text and copies things to a clipboard in the order you cut them without having to stop and paste each thing separately. Then, when you paste it, it will come out like you took it off. I do know before we got Windows 95 I was using spike so anyone who has word (whatever version) might try this. BTW, you can't spike in email or any of the other programs that I know of except WORD. To spike in WORD you highlight what you want then hold the Control key down while clicking on the F3 key (this key is on the row on the top line of your keyboard). You know you did it right if that text you highlighted dissappears. You do not have to paste now..just go to the next thing you want, highlight it, press control and hit the F3 key again and it should dissappear. Do this until you are ready to paste all that you have cut. When you are ready to paste open up a new document, hold down the Control and Shift keys at the same time and click F3 again. Class is over <grin>. Wanda PS: I've been watching the weather and the tornado's in Oklahoma. Princess, are you okay?
