    1. [SCHORRY-L] Reunion
    2. Wanda Martin
    3. Hello all, Since I asked earlier this week about the reunion I have received 4 or 5 letters wanting to know if I found out anything. So far I haven't heard anyone say it is still on. I think it was shelved as September was so far away. My plans are still to go to Conway (I've told so many down there I was going to visit) but if we are not having the reunion I may change the dates of my visit. If anyone knows anything about the reunion still being planned please let the list know. Thanks, Wanda

    1. [SCHORRY-L] Horry Confed Vet Pensions
    2. popmom7957
    3. June 13, 1999 Dear Group: I would like to help the website members help yourselves by asking someone to volunteer to type up and put on the website or some other commonly available free site, the lists of Horry County Confederate Pension recipients. I am a hunt-and-peck typer and basically computer illiterate so I will make the lists available to anyone that will agree to promptly do the job. The lists are typeset so they are easy to read. After having gone through a great deal of grief and major expense at the hands of the SC Dept of Archives and History, I have finally managed to assemble all of theirpayments rosters of Horry County Confederate Veterans or their wives that received pensions. The years of coverage are sporatic but start in 1898 and run through the 1923 rolls. If you think that any of your ancestors may have had Confederate military experience, and most of the able bodied men did, then this list is an all important reference document that must be used to demonstrate to the folks at the archives that your ancestors did serve and did receive a pension. I found out the hard way that, unless you can prove to them by using the State Assembly/Comptrollers disbursement list, they will not really bother to go through the jumble of pension documents, 11 c.f. to find your ancestor's docs, that the Horry Probate Judge's Office sent to them in 1998. There are many vets cited as having received pension funds that are not listed anywhere else and just about every surname query that I see on this site is represented. These lists and the resulting pension application docs and Honor Roll Commitee Minutes are a wealth of genealogical information; however, before the archives will not move off their behinds and sort, organize, and index these precious documents, there has to be enough demand generated for the pension records, and hence pressure brought to bear to go ahead and properly make them available for our reference purposes. As the situation stands now you have to go to Columbia and dig through 11 c.f. of material or pay a researcher at least $25 per hour and up to do it for you, which I feel is an outrage. I think that it would take a good typist about 4 hours max to do the job. Please let me hear from a willing volunteer and I willsee that you get the lists. Unfortunately, I am not able to respond to individual queries re. the lists. Sincerely Yours-----Julian R. Harper

    1. [SCHORRY-L] Now looking for Maureen Russ
    2. Dianne Moore
    3. Hi gang, I'm sorry to do this to the list (again) but ya'll know everyone and have been able to help me find others. I know that if anyone can help, ya'll can. :) While I was out of the country last year I tried to get email messages through my work address. However, after being out all of about 5 days something happened to the email capacity and I wasn't able to get anything or to send anything. But before it all went down I had received a message from Maureen Russ concerning the Russ family. I have been unable to find an email address for Maureen and am turning to ya'll for help. Does anyone on the list know her? If so, please let her know I'm back and would like to talk to her. If not, please forgive me for using bandwidth requesting this. Thanks to all of ya'll, Dianne

    3. I'm looking for information about Leroy "Roy" Collins' (1909-1997) family. I suspect his parent's names are Isaac Edward Collins (1874-1946) and Fannie Shelley Collins (1878-1957). They're all buried at the Centenary United Methodist Church. Does anyone know anything about this family? Thanks, Nick ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Free software, free e-mail, and free Internet access for a month! 1. [SCHORRY-L] I need help with this one
    2. Nick R Bryant
    3. This message doesn't have anything to do with my Horry County ancestors but I've had no luck any where else. I promised someone I would try to find out about their ancestors from the Charleston area. Pasted below is everything she told me: __________________________________________________________________ I am looking for the family DesBrosses. They were French Hugenots who, as the story goes, came to NY from Europe. Two or three brothers. One brother stayed in NYC and became a merchant very influential in the revolutionary war. So influential that there is a street named after him. Another brother or brothers went to PA and from there at least one of them sailed down the east coast to Charleston. Legend has it that my ancestor was born on the boat. The family settled in Charleston and one of the children grew up and became a banker and was there during the great Charleston earthquake, but i don't know the year. Another of the children (the one suposedly born on the boat) went to Abbeville, and there married a Thomas woman. I am not sure of all of this. Just family stories. However, in 1914, my great grandmother's first cousin went to Charleston and got information as to their great grandfather and Uncle Ben. This first cousin wrote a letter to my g grandmother stating this. However, the name was originally DesBrosses. This cousin used the name DeBrosse. My family used the name Bross. My gg grandfather was named George W. Bross. I think, perhaps, that George's father was named Francis or Francois. Francis being the one born on the boat. I wish I had access to some census records from SC, but apparently none of those are on line yet, and You can only request one at a time for the library to order and I'm not sure of counties and years. ____________________________________________________________________ Unfortunately, Charleston doesn't have it's own list (not that I saw any way). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Nick ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. 2. popmom7957
    3. June 8, 1999 Dear Members: Since we recently had an incident of a member accidently sending a "worm" or "virus", (I am not a computer expert by any stretch of the imagination) I thought that the following information that I received today from the computer chip and equipment manufacturing firm AMG (Advanced Micro Devices) in their weekly newsletter,"Parity Bits", Volume 6, No. 10 is worth passing along: "EMail Text Doesn't Have Virus" "You can count it as a hoax when you receive an eMail that tells you not to open a specific message. Viruses transmitted by e-mail are carried by the attached files and NOT by the text of the e-mail message itself". I was just lucky not to open the errant e-mail that was send, as I never accept e-mails from persons that I don't know or that I did not request info from but it could happen so now that I know the scoop, I hope not. Julian
