Kerry, Information regarding the United Daughters of the Confederacy can be found at their website at http://www.hqudc.org/ Essentially, this is an organization for women descended from men or women who served the Confederate States of America, either in some military or other official capacity. These are generally descendents of Confederate veterans but service also includes those who served as nurses, provided material aid, or served in some governmental capacity. Essentially, it is a lineage organization much like the DAR and requires documentation and proofs on each generation from the ancestor down to the prospective member. The United Daughters of the Confederacy was an outgrowth of the many Ladies Memorial and Aid Societies that sprang up all over the South following the War to assist not only the disabled and homeless veterans but families, and any other victims of the conflict, or others in any kind of need, and they still award many thousands of dollars in educational scholarships, preserve and maintain historic sites, libraries, and museums, perform thousands of hours of volunteer service to VA hospitals and other veterans facilities, erect historic markers, do cemetery work, etc. Many of the battlefields and other historic sites were purchased and maintained by the UDC organization after the War and have since been turned over to the various federal and state park services. Ever since their original charter was issued over a hundred years ago, the UDC was awarded the special honor of having their official insignia patent renewed each year by Congress. The insignia in question can be seen on the main page of their web page and contains an emblem of the First National Flag of the Confederacy (official governmental flag), NOT the Confederate Battle Flag that is so often used and abused by the KKK and other hate groups. Former Senator Carol Moseley-Braun decided that the UDC and their emblem were racist, radical, and personally offensive to her and to other African-Americans and mounted an ultimately successful campaign to no longer issue the patent. The patent is still issued by another governmental entity and the only significance in the whole flap was that Moseley-Braun won what she considered to be a moral victory. Although Senator Helms, and many other senators, spoke out against Moseley-Braun's stance on the UDC, Senator Helms main complaint with Moseley-Braun now has to do with the many allegations of misuse and abuse of funds and other questionable acts and clouds of scandal that arose during her term and has nothing, technically, to do with the UDC issue. She was not re-elected to Congress but now seeks an appointment as an official U.S. ambassador. Senator Helms is opposed to her appointment, as I understand it, due to the plethora of allegations regarding her ethical conduct during her term of office in the Senate, but they have, in reality, been enemies ever since the old UDC dispute. Sorry to be so long winded but not many people were aware of this issue and it takes some explaining to get the whole picture. Has anyone used either group, the Society of Mayflower Descendants or the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, for genealogy research purposes, and if so, with what success? My gg-grandfather (James H. Taylor, Charleston, SC) was a member of the Sons of the Am. Revolution, and one of his sons was, in addition to being a member of SAR, chaplain general of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. The SAR has a Patriot Index on CDROM containing over 600,000 family history records of Patriots and their descendants between 1880 and 1999. How much information would I expect to find, and would it be worth the investment? (If I have 2 ancestors known to belong, would that guarantee my finding family history records?) I would love to hear from anyone who has dealth with either organization. Thanks, Kerry McCarthy Wood Boston kmcwnu@aol.com

Any body seen/heard of these folks?...ca. 1850 - 1880. -----Original Message----- From: Dan Fairfax [mailto:dfair777@home.com] Sent: Monday, October 18, 1999 10:01 PM To: Fairteam1@aol.com Subject: Confederate memorial & re-internment pics Hello Cousin William Avery FAIRFAX, jr. and Family!!!...{:) It is my pleasure to share any information in hopes of our common goals...whar da heck we cum frum?....{:) We are from Fair Bluff, NC and my dad remembers that Jack Fairfax, his father, did live in Marietta near Fairmont, NC and people tended to move back and forth across county and state lines as the MAIN Farms needed help in the late 1800's after re-construction. Jack eventually married and became a farmer in Horry County, SC adjacent to the Heck LOVETT Farm and did barbaring at the house. Jack later moved to Fair Bluff, NC and then moved to Clio, South Carolina and Barbered out of his house, where he passed away in 1935. We are stumped as to who John Quincy Fairfax, m. to Millie Jane Cribb parents are?....His sons' social security card applications state his middle name to be KELLY?...have you any idea why the QUINCY and Kelly are interchanged in different records? The Maryland FAIRFAX Family was protestant and the Virginia FAIRFAX Family tended to stay with catholicism for a while longer....the history in England does reflect that both FAIRFAX Families are related in England. Are there any other FAIRFAX Family members of your'ns that are researching the origin of John and Millie FAIRFAX? If you can, at your convenience, share some copies of old family pictures, even if they are zerox renditions we shore wud appreciate your efforts....{:) Jack's brother Davis Fairfax owned a barber shop in Fair Bluff, NC in the 1930's and then began selling grave monuments. I am trying to pin down the lineage of the Fair Bluff, NC SCOTT Family - Aquilla Scott m. Amanda Hayes of Pages Mill section of Marion County, later Dillon County, SC...because my grandmother was Addie (Addeline) Florence HAYES Fairfax, whose parents were Nathan D. Hayes and Amy Caroline ANDERSON Hayes of Dillon County, SC....Nathan is buried at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Hwy 57, south of Dillon, SC and his last name was spelled HAYSE on the headstone....it's believed that an "Amanda Hayes" was a sister to Addie but we do not know if she was the Amanda HAYES Scott, married to Aquilla Scott of Fair Bluff, NC (both Amanda and Aquilla Scott are buried in the Fair Bluff Methodist Church Cemetery and their headstones are hidden behind a bush, which should be removed). Becky Maples has a copy print of a 1971 Fair Bluff, NC newspaper article, (The News Reporter, Oct. 11, 1971, 75th Anniversary Edition, pg. 6, "Fifty Early Families of Fair Bluff"), which discusses the SCOTT family and she is BLESSING our FAIRFAX family with an effort to transcribed it to me via email...I have a picture of the first page but not a copy of the entire article, (several pages). Hopefully Becky can shed some significant light on the SCOTT Family of Fair Bluff, NC for us all as I am being BLESSED by you sending us Scott pictures...{:) Guess what??? My wife's mother is a SCOTT, from Alabama....what a hoot!!!...{:) I am copying this to Becky Maples and maybe she can help us with who Ethel Scott may be...{:) Please continue helping us FAIR BLUFF, NC folks as you are....your pictures are AWESOME!!! Bless ya, Cousin Dan Fairfax 2629 Somerset Drive Nashville, Tennessee 37217 home email: dfair777@home.com - ----------------------------- Dan, I know you are interested in what Bruce has to say about Aquilla Scott. "Aquilla Scott came to Fair Bluff in the 1880s and settled on the old Griffin farm south of Fair Bluff. He married Amanda Hayes of Pages Mill section of Marion County, later Dillon County, SC. The Scotts had lived for several generations in Marion County. Aquilla's great grandfather Thomas Scott came to America from Scotland. Thomas' son Pharoah married a Campbell and their son James married Sally Elvington. Aquilla Q. Scott and Amanda Hayes Scott had the following children: Ella who married Cornelius Goodyear; Maude who married Charles Holsonback; Claude who married and lived at High Point; Edgar who married Hannah Bash; Samuel who married Janie Powell, daughter of I.M. Powell, and secondly Mattie Waller, daughter of Alex Waller; and Spencer who married Maggie Dunham of White Oak in Bladen County. Aquilla Scott was a maker of wagons and buggies. His sons Spencer and Sam were in business for many years in Fair Bluff together. Sam's sons own the Scott Motor Company in Fair Bluff and Spencer's sons own the Scott Oil Company in Fair Bluff." Mattie Waller and Sam Scott Sr. had no children. Mattie was my first cousin once removed; her father Alex Waller was a brother of my grandmother Rebecca Waller Anderson (Mrs. Gilbert Johnston Anderson). Alex Waller's first wife was Sarah Anderson, daughter of David Russell Anderson and his second wife Elizabeth Fowler. Mattie was a child of Alex Waller's 3rd wife Sallie Taylor. ==================== -----Original Message----- From: LOYCEWIN@aol.com [mailto:LOYCEWIN@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, October 07, 1999 7:43 PM To: DFairfax@nespower.com Subject: Re: Ethel Scott (September 9th 1907 Do you happen to know who Ethel Scott is? Do you have some dates BORN _______ Died ______ on them?
I am searching for information on Franklin Richardson & Julia Larrimore. They married and had at least 1 son, Henry M. Richardson. I'm have been told they were from Brittons Neck. I have no information about them. Any help or suggestions appreciated, Sonja
In my search for information on my g-grandmother, Callie Johnson Hughes Singleton, I sent for her death certificate. It only had a line drawn through the lines where the parents names should be. I called one of Callies grand daughters. She seemed to recall her father speaking of "Uncle Tom". She believes it was Callies brother. Does the name Tom Johnson sound familiar to anybody? I believe he would have been in Horry County. Thanks for any help, Sonja
I've posted this before but I didn't have Marys middle name then. I have finally recieved a death certificate for my g-grandmother. It shows her maiden name is Mary Magdaline Jordan. She married Levi James ("Jim" or "Little Jim") Martin. It shows her father is Joe Jordan and her mothers maiden name is Elizabeth Brown. I would like to find where her parents are buried. Have any of you ran across their names in your research? I have no information on them. Thanks for any help, Sonja
