    1. [SCHORRY-L] Horry Co. look up
    2. NaDean Bryant
    3. Could someone please do a look up for me at the Horry Co. courthouse? I'm looking for information on James Smith, Honor Smith Harris, and John Harris. On a family group sheet done by Janet Woodard of Charleston, SC, she listed the source of information as "Horry co. Deed Book L, p. 363." If anybody goes to the courthouse, could you please copy the info and email it to me? I found some information about James Smith, Sr. (my 4th great grandfather) in the Spring 1983 issue of The Independent Republic Quarterly. Some Facts About the Descendants of James Smith, Sr. of Horry Co. by his great great granddaughter, Kathryne Smith Hurt. In it she writes: "....The Smith family in Horry Co. and South Carolina is large, complicated, and very interesting, It is important that it be understood that not every person bearing the name Smith can be related, and this adds to the intrigue of trying to unwind the puzzle of it all. In our line, the search has been endless, and has already filled more than one book, so I will be able to touch only briefly upon those named. Recently we have uncovered a number of original letters and documents written by some early Smith relatives. I have made copies of some, thinking some reader will find them interesting. All originals have been authenticated, and are now in protective coverings. Also included are a few of the very meny copies of deeds for land grants, etc., relating to these ancestors. It is generally accepted fact that the Smith family came to North America from Scotland and Ireland. Within Horry County, SC, My great, great grandfather, James Smith, bought land and settled near Willow Springs, just outside of town, on what was called the "Sand Road". He was a very large and prosperous farmer. Born in 1793, he and his wife, Honor_____, born in 1795, had several sons, all born near Willow Springs...." Does anybody have any information on this family or know where I can get a copy of the book that Kathryne Smith Hurt talks about? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. 3. Quite possibly there could be a tie. My Mincey info is sketchy at best. I have names (and some dates) for Bryant Mincey (b. 1780)and his children, but don't have any generations after that (just a few names that I have picked up from the Horry County list). If I can make a connection, I will certainly let you know! Deb Thompkins Lowry Charlotte, NC

    3. Thanks to all who offered suggestions and if others have thoughts on the subject I would be happy to hear them. Glenda: Do you have the address for the Horry County Museum? Can they be reached by email? Carl: I have tried scanning the back of the picture but the pencil marks are just too faint and too much the same color as the backing material to register on the scan. I owned the picture for about 2 years and examined it many times for any clues and only recently noticed any evidence of markings. When holding it at a shallow angle, I can just make out a number which looks something like 1884 but nothing else can be made out. Vicky: The HCHS site would be a good place to display the picture except it doesn't seem to have a place for the purpose. It does have a section for photographs, but they are organized alphabetically by name. Maybe Craig could add a section for posting unidentified photos along with a brief description of whatever is known. (What do think Craig?) Thanks, Robert E. Lewis

There is some faded writing on the back but the only thing that is still legible is "1884". 3. Rob, Thanks so much for such a thorough review of the book. That was far more comprehensive than I had any right to expect. Now if only someone knows where a copy might be found. 1. [SCHORRY-L] Tombstone Dedication Ceremony
    2. Dear Asa Garden Causey and James Perry Jordan Descendents: Please take notice that on Saturday, February 26, 2000, at 11:00 A.M. ( this date is definite but time of day is only probable), we will be holding a three tombstone dedication ceremony at Campground Cemetery in Conway, to honor Asa Garden Causey, James Perry Jordan and his son Zebedee Jordan. It would be wonderful to have as many descendents and related lines turn out as possible. We have obtained three tombstones from the Veterans Administration and they are in Conway awaiting their erection. We have, in addition, obtained two Confederate iron Crosses to mark their graves which will also be erected for the ceremony. Please contact me so that I can get a head count of the expected attendees ASAP and for further details as to the ceremony. All available data points to Asa Garden being buried in Campground along with his second wife, Emily Beaty, her brother, one of his brothers and two sisters etc. and numerous Causey kin. We do not, however, have conclusive evidence as to his burial location and urgently urge anyone that does, to please contact me ASAP. James Perry is buried next to his wife, Asa's sister, Martha Jane "Patty" Causey Jordan. James' and Martha Janes' son, Zebedee Jordan died in Jackson Confederate Hospital in Richmond, VA on July 31, 1864, so his stone will be a "memorial" or cenotaph. Lewis > > - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - >>>>>>> Hi, Robert: Do you think that we might be confusing some of the list members with our names so close in spelling, etc? The book was copywrited in 1960 by Charlotte Stevenson and was printed by The R.L. Bryan Company, Columbia, S.C. It has a Forward and an Introduction of 4 or 5 pages and then the book proper is 181 pages in length and appears to be fully indexed. Charlotte was/is the daughter of the author, Mary Lewis Stevenson and finished the book after her mother died. There are nine chapters titled as follows: 1. William Lewis of Horry County, S.C. 2. The Eleven Children of William Lewis 3. Descendants of Isaac Lewis 4. Descendants of Hardy Lewis 5. Descendants of Jonothan Lewis 6. Descendants of Joel Lewis 7. Descendants of Patrick Lewis 8. Descendants of Polly Lewis Nichols 9. Descendants of Zilpha Lewis and William Gerald Those chapters cover 140 pages leaving 40 pages for an all-name index. It is easy to use and has quiet a bit of information concerning birth, death, burial, education, marriage, and occupation and possibly other facts such as migration. The period covered appears to be from about 1725 or there about to the late 1950s. I am having no success in remembering from whom I got the book. I think that it was someone on the SCHORRY-L list some 3 or 4 years ago but it could have just as easily been on the LEWIS-L list. My understanding was/is that the book is no longer in print. I have found the book to be very useful in expanding my database but, alas, it didn't tell me when nor from where or whom my GGGrandfather Gilbert LEWIS originated. I'll do some limited look-ups in the book for those persons who make such a request, but I must warn in advance that I can sometimes be slow in returning messages. Later, ROB Robert G. I have Dozier's death certificate #2587. He was 23 years old and died January 3, 1918, from accidental drowning, frozen to death, died hunting - body was found February 14, 1918, in Georgetown County, SC. His father is listed as F.M.
