Dear Jan: If you will go to the Horry County Historical Society website, you can check for yourself and a bunch of other census years and loads of other good stuff. February 8, 2000 Dear Chris and Clarke Thompson: I thank you both for your kind assistence re. Capt. James Benjamin Lewis Beaty. I find he and his family cited on pages 87 and 88 of the "Beatys of Kingston". I never stop admiring the contents of that fine resource. As my earlier e-mail stated, I am looking to find the Minute Books and other materials of the Horry County Confederate Surviviors Association, as it is a plethora of valuble genealogical and WBTS data, that hopefully may not be found anywhere else. The National Archives; the Confederate Relic Room; the SC Dept of Archives and History; AND, THE hORRY cOUNTY cOURTHOUSE RECORD KEEPERS say that they do have them. I was in hopes of finding Capt. Beaty's descendents or heirs in hopes that they might have inherited this material as Capt. Beaty was the Commander of the unit for a good many years, until his death and I believe it had pretty much dissolved by 1913. Unfortunately, I see on page 88 of Barnhills that he and his wife had only one child, Nancy (Nannie) Beaty that died unmarried, hence probably had no children. So now I guess that I need to switch my search to his brother's children, JAMES EDWARD BEATY, and his wife IDA GRISSETTE. James Edward was also a distinguished member of the 26th SCV Inf Regt. but since the 26th never served at Chickamauga (Army of Northern Virginia not the Army of Tennessee), Barnhills is wrong in saying that James Edwards was wounded there! At this point I now am looking for the descendents of the children of JAMES EDWARD BEATY AND IDA GRISSETTE (two brothers married two sisters). Their 7 children'S names were: Leila Ida; Maude (lived in Sumter, SC); Genevieve; Anne; Ruby; James; and, Lewis. Finally, should anyone on the SCHORRY have any suggestions on where to look for the Survivor's Association docs, then please forward your suggestions. Thank you Clarke and Chris-----Julian R. Deryl: Would you mind checking to see if there were any Boyds in the 1820 Horry Co. census? Thanks so much. Jan
February 8, 2000 Dear Clarke: Thank you for your response. I will get my copy of "The Beatys of Kingston" out and look for the citation, could you cite me the page right off, just in case I can't find it? Do you know anything else about Capt. Beaty, such as who inherited his papers? Also, my wife is double-connected to the Beaty family. Her Step-Great-grandmother, Emily Beaty Causey, her Great-Grandfather's Asa Garden Causey's second wife, is cited on page 15 under the 1850 Census Household #962 of Thomas S. Beaty, "Emily 18f". She married Asa in April 1888 and died on march 16, 1923. Her death certificate says that she is buried at Campground Cemetery in Conway and her brother William is there also but alas, no tombstones. We are also looking for more info for her hoping that if we can find her, then we can better document Asa's burial location. Secondly, Timothy Cooper's dad's name was Ezekiel Cooper and if you will check the 1790 or 1800 Horry Census, you will see a female juvenile that is not their mom, Martha Magby, but we believe that to be Asa Garden's mother Lucretia Cooper, the oldest child of Martha and Ezekiel. None of the Coopers can prove or disprove this theory but there is a lot of indirect proof and family legend that tends to point in that direction, we are still looking. Do you know anything about Timothy and his brothers having an older sister? Thanks and I will get back with you with some more info and questions. Hi Julian, I am connected indirectly to J. Benjamin Lewis Beaty. I branched off from his aunt Mary Harriet Beaty (who married Timothy Cooper) and he came from Col. James S. Beaty, Esq. and Mary Frances Congdon. Col. James Beaty and Mary Frances Congdon were my gggg grandparents. James Beaty's parents were John Beaty and Elizabeth Mary Prince. In Edward Stanley Barnhill's book "The Beatys of Kingston" it notes the following for your B.L. Beaty: "married Frances Grissette. He was Captain, 26th SC Reg't., Co. K, CSA and was wounded at Petersburg, 1865". Their child was Nancie (Nannie) Beaty who died unmarried. Thank you Deryl for your prompt response. I probably didn't make my question clear enough-what I'm looking for is the individual family member, I have the head of household with dependent information taken from our great Horry County site. Maybe there wasn't an individual census taken in 1820. Appreciate your assistance. George

February 7, 2000 Dear List Members: I am looking to find or contact any descendent of Capt. B.L. Beaty, 26th SC Vol Infantry, C.S.A.. He is buried in Georgetown County and was born February 8, 1842 and died December 31, 1913. Is there a contact list or e-mail site comparable to the SCHORRY for Georgetown County? Thanks---Julian
I need help and certainly hope that someone out there can help me. I have been reviewing information contained in Mary Belle Manning Bethea's book titled Ancestral Key to the Pee Dee. In the book, she gives the birth and death date of Elizabeth, wife of J. B. Perritt, as Elizabeth born on December 5, 1814 and stated that she died on December 5, 1882. This Elizabeth, according to McDonald's & Perritt's, was then buried in the Smith Cemetery, Hwy. 917, Smithboro. Now, my question: In my searching I have a Jesse, son of Joseph Perritt and Sarah Smith, who is of the right age to be the J. B. Perritt given. However, I don't know what my Jesse, son of Joseph and Sarah's middle initial is/was. Does anyone know? Can anyone help be determine which J. B. Perritt is the husband of this Elizabeth? The information I've found on the Jesse, son of Joseph and Sarah Smith Perritt is as follows: From Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity by Lucille Utley is taken: "Gideon Powers et us vs. William Perritt et al. Bill for Injunction and Relief. Filed 2 Jan. 1839. Amended Bill filed 5 Dec. 1839. Gideon Powers and wife Elizabeth Powers show that on 14 Jan. 1826 orator purchased from Sarah Perritt several negroes, William Daniels and William Perritt well knowing the possession on 26 Jan. 1838 took possession of negroes and William Perritt has them in his possession. Orator believes he intends to remove them from jurisdiction of court. William Daniels married Mary Perritt the daughter of Sarah Perritt. The oratrix is also the daughter of Sarah Perritt. Elizabeth Powers claims negroes by virtue of a deed of gift dated 21 June 1807 by Joseph Perritt, the father of the oratrix. Joseph Perritt is still living in Marion Dist.; has not lived with his wife for a number of years. Sarah Perritt has still living the following children: Elizabeth, wife of Gideon Powers, Jesse Perritt, William Perritt, Mary wife of William Daniels, John Perritt." Joseph's will listed his children John, Jesse, and William. However, it did not mention a wife. His brother John's estate was administered by Barfield Moody, who sold 130 acres to John's mother, Sarah, and William, his brother. The estate also gave other heirs such as Gideon Powers and his wife, Elizabeth; Jesse Perritt; and Sarah Daniels, her husband William, and her children Bosswell, Martha Ann, Gamewell, and Perry Daniel. If anyone can help me figure out if this is the J.B. Perritt who was also married to the Elizabeth above, I would truly appreciate it. Thanks, Dianne
Is there any one out there who knows anything about the John Perrot listed in Early Pee Dee Settlers by Gregg. According to the information in this book, John Perrot's spouse was Julian Newman, widow of Robert Newman, who he married at the Parish of Prince Frederick Winyaw on October 3, 1749. John Perrot was in Pee Dee 1737. The last date shown is 1767. He lived on the North Side of the Santee River. I would truly appreciate knowing more about this John if anyone is able to help me. Thanks for all your help, Dianne Moore
Does anyone know where I could find a reference to find where old community names were located? In old records you will see where a person died at Louisville, or had land on Rattlesnake Branch. I would like to find out where some of these places were. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Wanda
I don't have any info of interest to you that I know of, but I do have two brothers, Bennet and Otto Rhames that married into the Causey/Marlow family. Bennet married Eva Mae Marlow and they had at least two children. They lived in Conway, and I believe they all were from that area, but later moved away. Otto, who married my half Aunt, Wilhminna Causey, moved to Fayetteville, NC. I seem to remember that Bennet and Eva Mae moved to Rock Hill, SC. I am just curious if your Rhames' might be connected to any of these. Thanks for any help that you can give me. Bob Causey. In your search for Grahams have you checked in the HCHS website under military records, civil war, to see whether or not your ancestor received a Confederate Pension? It seems to me that I remember seeing one or two Grahams on the list. If he did, then you should write the SC Dept of Archives and History in Columbia for his pension papers. They are on the web but they generally don't respond to e-mail requests. It has been my experience that the SCDAH are not always responsive and you may have to be persistent. Use the data in the HCHS website as proof of the pension receipt and stick to your guns. Also, if you are near Conway or plan on a visit, there is a big read book kept in the rear of the records portion of the County Judge's office in the Courthouse that is a ledger book showing Confederate Pension data which may be useful when you are levering the apps etc. out of the SCDAH. If and when I find the location of the Survivors Association's minute books etc., I will let the list members know and then get it put on the HCHS website.
