    2. O.K., I feel confident that he was in the 10th SCV Inf and you should get his pension and CSR photostat from the SC Dept of Archives and History in Columbia and a copy of the original CSR from the National Archives. At the same time and on the NARA form, you should request them to do a search of the Miscellaneous or "Unfiled Papers" Microfilm Rolls because you can often come up with something totally unexpected. Please let me know if I may help you further. Julian Ejsak@aol.com wrote: > Thank you so much Julian. 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Soldiers
    2. February 11, 2000 Dear Bonita: This is a two part answer. 1. If your nephew has a photocopy of the SC Dept of Archives and History's Confederate pension files, that can't be gotten from anywhere else, in Horry County's case, except from them. 2. If your nephew has the SCDAH's photstatic copy of the National Archives' Compiled Service Records which they got back in the early 1920's, chances are but not always you have want they have but a nearly illegible copy of the CSR. Just to make sure that you have everything re. your veteran and to get the best possible copy, I'd make darn sure of his service name and unit and then order using a credit card. They are $10 each. To make sure that the "folks" at the NARA know for sure that they have a CSR for you veteran, I'd photocopy what you have and send it along with your request. You will need NATF FORM 80 which is available at the website online of the TEXTUAL BRANCH OF THE NARA. I have purchased all of the CSR for the soldiers of the 26th SCV Inf but still don't have a microfilm reader/printer to make the copies for you folks. Maybe next month I can come up with $400+ to buy one. In any case, if you will follow these steps it should be a snap. If the NARA sends your request back with nothing, then just return to their Supervisor, Bernice Jackson with a little hell raising atached and she'll get the job done for you. I hope that I have answered your question? 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] Confederate Look Up
    2. February 11, 2000 Dear Jan: I believe that I may be offer some help but you will need to do some homework based upon my findings. First, I consulted the Compiled Service Record and Unit rosters for SC Confed troops, I have none of the other Confed states as the full set costs $1,500 and "Broken Fortunes" by Randolph Kirkland which is the best single register of SC Confed deaths. 1. Robert Boyd 6th Cav, Co. C was killed in action; 2. Robert Boyd, 5th State Troops, Co. A, survived the War and if your man had a brother or other kin named A.J. Boyd, then this is probably your man. I could not find the 5th State referred to as "Hatch's Coastal Ranger's" but the 5th was composed of men over 40 and boys under 17 and they saw limited action which would be consistent with a unit name that I have not seen referenced before. I do not have Stewart Sifakis SC edition of "The Confederate Compendium" which might list "Hatch's". Since Robert was born in 1835, he most likely was attached to a regular Confederate Unit but some eligible men were assigned to State Troops if they had physical impairments, were overseers, or in some other deferred. 3. Capt. Robert Boyd, 6th Reserve, Co. A could be your man. 4. Sgt. Robert Boyd, 17th Inf, Co. D. died of disease while in service to the Confederacy so he is eliminated. Furthermore, the 17th was primarily ogranized from men in the Central and western part of SC. 5. Robert Boyd, 23rd Inf, Cos. A and C, is an unlikely but possible choice since the 23rd was not staffed by eastern SC men. MY GUESS is that man #2 is your soldier and I'd order his CSR to see if the recruitment dates etc. match with your gentleman, if not then try #3 and then #5. I checked the Horry County pension rolls and Robert Boyd nor his widow Sarah received a pension in the years from 1898 to 1924, so he was either not in Horry County or did not financially qualify for the pension, which nearly all applicants or widows got by 1921. Being born in 1835, he was more than old enough to qualify by 1900. You might want to e-mail Mac Wyckoff, a real exper in SC Confederate units and if he has tiem he will try to answer your query re, "Hatch's Rangers". I checked his website and it is not listed http://members.tripod.com/mwyckoff/index.html . I hope that is coorect. If I may be of further service or if you can provide more clues as to your man's Confed service, then please let me know and I'll see what I can do. Sincerely Yours----Julian Jan Neal wrote: > Julian: > > Would you look up Robert Boyd for me? I've had a hard time with this > because The Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865. 2. It doesn't do any lasting good. If you raise hell then the Supervisors at the National Archives will move in to solve that problem, the as soon as that one is done, it reverts back to the deadhead clerks again and most of the time, just a lot of needless aggravation. Do what I did. I ran a test by requesting the Complied Service Records of a Union and of a Confederate that I already had in my hand. The Union man's record came back in 3 weeks but the Confederate's took hell raising and more than 3 months to get. That is a fact. Try your own test and let me know how it turns out. 3. I'm not sure if you still order those records from the National Archives. I know when I first ordered them in 1975, they would send them to you. I also found, that two people could order the same records & they would get something different along with some of the same. In other words, one person would copy what they thought was the best & the other person copied different items. Best to put a note in the order to send everything pertaining to this person. WT

    2. February 11, 2000 Dear Diane: It has been my repeated experience that the National Archives clerical personnel do everything possible but help when it comes to providing data and the Complied Service Records etc. re. Confederate Soldiers. I can't say more without being tarred with the catch-all racist label which I am not. Unless you can tell them right where to find it, then they would just as soon turn back your requests. That is why I got tired of their &^$@* and I ordered a book that shows theCompiled Service Record (CSR) of every SC Confed that has one, ordered from a "Southern Publisher". Give me your soldier's name and military unit (SC only is all I have) and I will tell you for sure whether or not he has a Complied Service Record. You will need to go to the NARA website to get their NATF FORM 80 form which you complete and use to file for the soldier's records. I'll be tickled to death to help in any way that I can. Their is a $10 charge if they find his CSR and no fee if they don't. There are some other Confed records that you can also ask for and I'll give those file numbers if your man has a CSR. Good luck---Julian SIMMONSCRAFT@cs.com wrote: > i sent off for a record at the national archives for a civil war vet > confederate. they wrote me back and said they do not keep records for the > confederate soldiers only the union and that the rebels had to sign a paper > saying they were pardoned from the war. if this is true then how come the > blank papers say to mark union or confederate when sending off for records. > does anyone know thanks > diane > > ==== SCHORRY Mailing List ==== > More Horry County Listmember sites.. > 6. 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Soldiers
    2. February 11, 2000 Dear James: First of all, I don't recognize the numbers or their significance. Maybe some of the site users can tell us what they mean. Secondly, I only have the Compiled Service Record roster for SC troops and none for NC. But it was common for individuals living close to the NC border or having kin in NC to join a NC unit. Thirdly, it is entirely possible that a SC soldier served the CSA but his record was destroyed before being gathered up by the Federals whom composed the CSR. Finally, I do not have an Edmond Spivey or Spivy, but I do have a Ephraim Spivey that most likely was from Horry or Marion County that served with the 26th SC Vol Inf Regt., Co. E. Also, a H.E.(E=Edmond?) Spivey that served in the 7th and 15th Inf, R.W. Spivey 10th Inf and W.A. Spivey Manigault's Arty Batt.. All of these units had Horry and Marion County men serving so maybe they were brothers or cousins. Ephraim Spivey was killed in action probably while serving in and near Petersburg, VA in 1864. If this sounds familiar, I'd recommend that you write the SC Dept of Archives in Columbia to get his CSR to find out more and if it is your man, then let me know and I'll photocopy his CSR for you from my microfilm for $5.00 to help defer my costs and this includes postage or you can write to the national Archives in Washington to get his CSR. They are online and you will need to use FORM NATF 80. AS this man was a member of the 26th and if he is kin, which I am building a website to honor that unit, I would appreciate hearing from you about any family stories, letters, etc., which I will use to personalize the website and help "breath life" into the material. Good hunting and let me know if I may be of further service in helping to perpetuate the member of the galliant Confederate soldiers---Julian james gore wrote: > Thanks for the offer to do a look up. 1. [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Soldiers
    2. February 11, 2000 Dear Listmembers: I will do look-up requests at no charge, as time allows, to see if your ancestor was involved in the SC C.S.A. armed forces, or at least to see if he has a Compiled Service Record (CSR) on file at the National Archives. This is a big help in case you want to order his CSR because many times their names were mis-spelled or perhaps not in the unit that the family had thought and the clerks could care less about Confederates, it is a big headache to them and to do more than swat flies. Sincerely Yours---Julian R. Harper

I have just purchased two books from Broadfoot Publishing that lists every SC man that has a Compiled Service Record on file at the National Archives. While some soldier's service is not included in the CSR's, it is still the best overall site to start an inquiry. It would be my pleasure to help in any way that I can. Sincerely Yours-----Julian R.
