    1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Soldiers
    2. February 13, 2000 Dear Robert: My roster records only show SC troops that have Compiled Service Records on file at the National Archives , Textual Service Branch and their photostatic copies at the SC Dept of Archives in Columbia and most of the SC vets deaths, "Broken Fortunes" by Mr. Randolph Kirkland. I don't have a listing or anything close and including initials in either book for TT. As Horry County is on the border with NC and many of her folks had ties in NC, I'd look in the very fine regt index books for NC. Also, check the HCHS pension index as that will sometimes provide data for a vet that is not available anywhere else, and see if TT got a pension and if so order his papers from the SCDAH. For John, he is cited as J.M. Cannon (with the old timey script and careless clerks many easy to make mistakes were made reading this writing in transcription) died at home of disease on an unspecified date and was a member of both the 10th SCV Inf, probably early on in the War and later in the 26th SCV Inf, Co. "A", which is my main source of research interest as I am compiling data for a website, so please share all the info that you have on John N.. He apparently didn't make it to Appomattox so he died before April 9, 1865. Get his CSR and let me know of how it goes in case I can help further and also please share any family histories etc. that you might have for John and I will put it on my website and also pass it along as updated for Mr. Kirkland's book. Good luck---Julian Nspctr1@aol.com wrote: > Julian, > I have sent for the pension records for one of my ancestors, but I don't > know the unit. 2. Dear Gerald: A fine response but you are partly wrong. The formerly Confederate States, all that I am aware of, paid their state's pension benefits to the then veteran in residence, regardless of his state of Confederate Service. Fruthermore, the vast majority of libraries, all locals that I have been to, do not carry Broadfoots Confederate Compiled Service Records and Units Indices. A few carry them for thier respective state's veterans but most don't even do that. I have never been to Texas but from what i have been told and see on the web, you folks put a lot of money into your Confed resources, North Carolina and Virginia do also but not the remaining states that I am familiar with. Also, the Confederate Web Ring and knowledgeable researchers have websites, esp. SC, that are very good. Julian "Gerald E. Forsythe" wrote: > Just a note to pass along to the list. 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Soldiers
    2. February 13, 2000 Dear Dianne: Yes, Indians or Native Americans participated on both sides during the War Between The States and fought with distinquished records, both in their own tribal based units and integrated with the regular or non-Indian units, and so did freed negroes and some times slaves that accompanied their masters. Not just as cooks, teamsters, or in labor battlions. Also, there were a number of women that disquished themselves as men and fought well for the Confederacy and the Union sides and several actually got soldiers pensions. My Compiled Service Records Index shows 36 Chavis SC confederate soldiers and 26 in what I consider to have Horry County soldiers or "Horry Units", so if you will give me ancestors name, I'll see if he is on the listing index. If I may be of further service, then please let me know----Julian SIMMONSCRAFT@cs.com wrote: > this may sound nutty but besides my white ancestors from s.c. i also had an > indian great etc. grandfather and i was wondering if the indian des. were in > the civil war. if someone could tell me i will try to find him in the muster > rolls, i don't remember seeing any chavis name on the muster rolls for > s.c.(horry), but i could be mistaken.someone told me they didn't have indians > volunteering for the war. thanks for any info > diane > > ==== SCHORRY Mailing List ==== > More SCHORRY-L listmember sites: > 16. 3. Jane, Thanks so much for the list of confederate soldiers from Robeson County. I have a copy of a picture of my great great grandfather, Daniel Asbury FAULK, in his uniform. He married Sarah Ann BETHEA who is in the picture with him. I never knew what rank he held or any of the battles he fought in but with the information you provided, I can begin my research with some vital facts at hand. 1. [SCHORRY-L] GRAHAM, JAMES M.--
    2. Dow
    3. I obtained from the SCDAH a copy of the plat for 45 acres surveyed by James Beaty for my gg-grandfather, James M. The notation, beginning at the middle of the page, reads: "I do hereby certify for James. M. (stopping at the right margin and then beginning again at the left margin) Montgomery (which is lined out twice) Graham a tract of land containing forty five acres surveyed for him 16 August 1853. Situated in All Saints Parish Horry District Bounded S.W. by Land known as the Bigelow Land N.E. by land now owned by Daniel Stevens N.W. by E. F. Grahams land & on branch waters of Island Swamp, east side of Waccamaw River." Now...could it be that James M. is James Montgomery? Seems reasonable to me if the writer seeing that there wasn't enough room carried 'Montgomery' to the next line and then for some reason (preference of James maybe?) simply crossed it out. I know it's a reach. I've also poured over my topo maps of the area and can not find a reference to Island Swamp. There is an Island Green Golf Course on the east side of the Waccamaw between Bucksport and Socastee. Any thoughts? Dow L. Graham Researching Grahams of Horry County SC and Wayne County GA

    2. Julian, I have sent for the pension records for one of my ancestors, but I don't know the unit. Would you look and see if you could find any of the following: Toquet Turentine ( TT ) Cannon, Horry County, b. Aug 15, 1848. His wife Tabitha drew a pension for his service in the Civil War. John N. Cannon, (TT's Father), Horry County, b. Abt 1823: wife Mary; I also have been told that he died while home on leave Elisha Tyler, Horry County, b. abt 1843; wife Amelia Any help would be appreciated. 3. Just a note to pass along to the list. I don't care to get involved in an on going debate but thought I'd add a few comments. These may have already been covered, if so I apologize to the list. Research is like money. Personal interest dictates how well it is managed. I personally have researched several hundred individuals that served in the Confederate State of America. As a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans part of our duty is to find, document and place markers for these soldiers. I'm sorry I have a long list already so I don't have time for anymore. In my home state of Texas we have researched cemeteries , ordered markers and then held dedication ceremonies for these veterans. In regards to research, problems may arise along the way but the individual must be persistent. In dealing with the National Archives I have been very fortunate. When filling out these forms they will only research one area, pension, period or compiled service records, at a time. Also only on company at a time. Since Confederate pension records are not kept in Washington it is useless to check the pension box , for a confederate soldier. If your ancestor served in more than one company at a time, a separate form has to be submitted for each. When the form is returned it may state e.g.. that a person by the same name also appears in Company D, F, & K besides the Co. C you submitted. The reason for this is consolidation of the companies and the information is all in one card file. On other occasions the individual may serve in the infantry go home wounded, not return, and reappear in a cavalry company, every infantryman's dream. The NA form ask that you complete as much info as possible, where born, died, served etc. If I want to eliminate a possible company of service, I just give the individuals name, state, branch and company. Submit several forms at the same time with the basic info but for the different companies he may have served in. You will only pay for the ones that match. Remember people misread names back then just as they do now. State Archives, college and university libraries usually have microfilm card index files for the Civil War, pertaining to the state where the repository is. The complete service file has to come from Washington. If you live in Texas and/or researching a veteran that served in a Texas unit, Hillsboro College Research Center has almost all the complete microfilm rolls of Texas units. Many universities have microfilm newspapers of the period. Battle reports were often submitted to the papers for publication, containing list of killed and wounded. Papers in Virginia, Texas and Louisiana are some states that I am personally aware of published reports. I could go on but there are books on this subject and sites on the web that also deal it. Even the Official Record of the War of the Late Rebellion ( referred to as OR) is on CD-ROM. Broadfoot has published a complete list of Confederate veterans that appear in the NA microfilm records. The several volume set is available at most large genealogy libraries. Our on library, a town of 32,000, has this set in the genealogy room, bought by donations. County Courthouses through out the south have pension application books, when available, and indigent list of widows and orphans. Some counties, I have found, also have the membership books of the United Confederate Veterans. These were usually given to the county when the aging veterans no longer had enough members for a quorum. These books usually state unit, company and branch of service, minutes of meetings. I have asked for these books all across the south, many times told no such book, but would find the book sometimes. Court house employees really don't know what all is in the records. It is up to the INDIVIDUAL RESEARCHER to find this information. Be positive, patient and convinced that you will find something. If you don't you gave it a good shoot. One last thought if your veteran had a brother that served in the same unit, usually they did, send to your state archives for his pension also. The amount of information is really surprising in the pension applications; often stating brothers, fathers that served in the same Co.; when they migrated to the state they are submitting the application. etc. If your veteran later moved to Texas you may be in luck. All southern states would only give pensions to individuals that served from the home state. Texas was an exception, granting pensions to anyone that met residency and financial requirements required by law, usually six months in a county of the state. GERALD

    2. dear julian thank you so much it is exceedingly kind of you. the thing of it is i filed the proper naft form and all just like i did for my union vet. i got back a lot of info on my union vet and only had to pay $10.00 for it, but they did not even check for my southern vet. the reply was we don't have any records on the southern vets and your vet had to sign a pardon form they didn't even look.my vet was from south carolina. his name was isaac hartley hatcher, mar to naomi cooper hatcher he was born abt 1826 d.12-09-1891.he was in 2 battalion of south carolina sharp shooters, a private, the box # is 000381 the exct#i is 0014 and the record # is 00003955 on the civil war muster rolls .i also have an uncle isaacs brother whose name was abner hatcher, who was wounded at petersburg, va in 1864 of the co D 26th regiment south carolina vol.inf ,,ABNER was wounded in 1864. b 1843 d. 1900 (isacc was my great etc.i grand father.isaac probably signed up in horry co s.c. .i thank you for any help. blessings diane simmons simmonscraft@cs.com

    2. dear bob i am in total agreement with what you are doing and you have my support with anything i can do. when i sent for my union des. i received in due time a tremendous amt. of info and pd only $10.00 for it. when i traced at last my southern roots anc. i was offended at the reply. of my desc having to sign a paper saying he was pardoned and they had no records on southern civil war vets. if so then why is there two boxes on the form saying mark union or confed? exactly what do i need to put in my letter to the reps abt this problem. i want to say the things that would be most effective. thanks diane
