Do any of you Graham researchers have an Alfred Graham who died about 1940 in your tree? He was married to a Mary Johnson. My cousin in Florida is trying to trace him. He is her grandfather. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks, Wanda
I am Julia Norton from Hayward, California. I am spending February and half of March and next summer assisting my parents (primarily my mother, Betty Sue Hawkins Norton, but also my father Robert Louis Norton, both of Birmingham, Alabama) with some research on our family. I have this time because my children are mostly grown and I am a college professor on sabbatical (Statistics is my field--don't shudder, I like it). I am primarily interested in William Norton born in New Hanover County about 1739. My belief is that he moved to Horry County South Carolina, married Patience Minsey, a widow, about 1780. They had six children, Lewis, Mary, William Jr., James, Ruth, and John Wesley, all born in Horry County between about 1780 and 1794. William Sr., died in Horry County in 1806. William Jr., to Barbour County Alabama before 1826 and Patience and John W. joined him there. I am a descendant from William Jr.'s line. If you have any interest in what I know of William Norton's descendants in Alabama, please let me know. Meanwhile, if you have any leads or information that I could use, I would appreciate it. I have no knowledge about the descendants of Lewis Norton b. about 1781; Mary Norton b. about 1782, m. Isaac Lewis probably about 1802; James Norton (Rev.), b. about 1786, d. Columbia SC about 1828; or Ruth Norton, about 1790, m. Joel Lewis (son of William Lewis and Mourning Vamplet of Horry Co.) moved to Mississippi. I am also interested in them. I have gotten some very useful assistance from researchers in Horry County Historical Society already. For example, William Norton Jr., b. Horry County about 1784, married Lucretia Harralson, b 1788 in Horry County. I got some really interesting information about Lucretia that I had not known. Also, their son James Russell Norton, b. 21 Dec. 1804 Horry County, married Margaret C. Johnston b. 4 Oct. 1808. I had thought that Margaret's mother was Mary Hodges. But she turns out to be wife two and Margaret's mother was Celia Floyd. I learned that from a descendant of Margaret's sister Mary Ann. It is great filling in the female lines especially because they are so often forgotten. I am in the dark about Patience, wife of William Norton who died in Horry County 1806(?). There is some indication that she might be the sister of Lucretia Harralson. That is really strange as Lucretia would then also be her daughter-in-law. Of course, there could have been two wives of Josiah Harralson d. 1822 Horry County. Patience could have been born from the first wife, not Mary Vick, whom I believe is the mother of Lucretia Harralson. Any light to shed on this topic? Also I learned today that a William Norton was in the 2nd Infantry of North Carolina, Captain Augustin Spain's Company--they were captured 12 May 1780 by the British at Charleston, they were furloughed 1 January 1783 at James Island, SC, and they were decommissioned from the Revolutionary War 15 Nov. 1783. Certainly puts a William Norton in the right place to marry in Horry County in early 1780s. The widow (Patience Norton) reported in Alabama (She died Barbour County, Alabama about 1839) that William Norton was in the revolution. I notice that in Virginia about 1780 a William Norton and a Henry Norton were reported as Tories. So I have some searching to unravel which William Norton (there may even have been two in Spain's company) is in my line. All the best--Julia Norton
I have read in a history of Francis Marion references to the Socastee Swamp at the time of the Revolution being a British "resort". Does anyone know of where to find more information about this "resort" reference?
hello all i would like that map site also thanks richard
Could anyone tell me where I can obtain a copy of the 1860 Horry County Census Index? Jim Strickland
A reminder from the listowner: Please keep the posts to this list relevant to the topic (the history and genealogy of Horry County). Emails containing jokes, religious or political information, idle chit-chat, etc. should be sent privately, and not to the list. Also, when replying to a message, please include only the portion of the message that you are referring to. Snip off the rest of the message, especially if it contains a lot of lines of header information. The rest of us will appreciate being able to read the emails without having to scroll through many lines of irrelevant information first. Thanks, Marceline

Thanks, Robert Roach http://www.senate.gov/ http://www.house.gov/writerep/ ============================================================ PRESIDENT PROPOSES BUDGET INCREASE FOR NARA <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ President Clinton has proposed a budget increase of $77,755,000 for Fiscal Year 2001 that would enable the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to renovate the original National Archives Building in downtown Washington, D.C., and advance initiatives in four major areas under NARA's Strategic Plan: ~ Improve records management in the Federal Government ~ Meet special challenges posed by electronic records ~ Expand public access to records ~ Meet storage and preservation needs of growing quantities of records. For improving government records management, the budget requests an addition of $992,000 to extend NARA's Targeted Assistance Program to Federal agencies in more regions of the country as well as in Washington, D.C. Through this partnership program, agencies with particularly severe records management needs receive priority help from NARA. For meeting electronic records challenges, the budget requests an addition of $902,000 for helping Federal agencies manage electronic records by testing guidance within NARA itself, and for adding three high-level professionals to assist with the development and implementation of an Electronic Records Archives (ERA). With our base funding plus these funds, NARA will continue working towards this ERA within the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure. Through this partnership, the San Diego Supercomputer Center has produced prototype demonstrations for preserving large volumes of electronic records such as email messages in a relatively short time. We now need to continue research toward building an archives that can preserve any kind of electronic record in a format that frees it from the computer system in which it was created, an archives that also can meet requests for that record using a variety of tools available today and advanced technologies that will be developed for tomorrow. All this could be a major breakthrough in NARA's search for a system to accession, preserve, and provide electronic access to electronic records of the Federal Government. For expanding public access to records, the budget requests an increase of $14,516,000 for the following initiatives: ~ Improving reference services for records needed by America's veterans ~ Expanding NARA's online offerings via the Internet to customers nationwide ~ Upgrading NARA's communications infrastructure to improve service capabilities for customers and staff nationwide ~ Meeting requirements of the Administration's records declassification order, and ~ Taking custody of and beginning to process the records of the Clinton Administration in compliance with the Presidential Records Act. For meeting storage and preservation needs of growing quantities of records, the budget requests an increase of $6,528,000 to ensure the survival of veterans' records in jeopardy, make NARA's facilities more secure, and move Administration records into temporary quarters in Little Rock in preparation for the Clinton Presidential Library. The major increase proposed in the budget is $88,000,000 for the renovation NARA has been repairing of the original National Archives Building, now nearly two-thirds of a century old. The work will include correcting mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire safety deficiencies; retrofitting the Rotunda to display America's Charters of Freedom (the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights) in new encasements currently under preparation; bringing the building into full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; upgrading storage conditions to meet modern archival standards; and providing sufficient exhibit and public-use space to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Best Wishes, Juliana Smith, Editor, Ancestry Daily News Jennifer Browning, Associate Editor Please feel free to circulate this newsletter to other genealogy enthusiasts!
