    3. My grandmother was Florie Sarvis. d/o Patrick Corneilius Sarvis,s/o John N. Sarvis s/o Samuel Sarvis s/o Samuel Sarvis. There appear to be 2 sarvis lines in Horry co. The most documented is John Sarvis jr's line. My Samuel line is not as documented. Possibility ? Samuel and John jr were brothers . John sr. came from Ireland prior to 1751 , the year John jr. was born. Let me know if anything looks familiar. 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Vets
    2. March 29, 2000 Dear Ginger: Nearly all Confederate pensions were issued by the respective states in which the vet was residing upon filing an ap for the pension; therefore the systems and records are kept by the respective states. In SC, the Dept of Archives and History in Columbia is the record keeper. They have a website. If you can find the County in which his widow resided and approximate filing date and along with the data I given, and assuming that she lived until at least 1898 and did not re-mary, it is very likely that you may recover her widow's pension ap, both pre- and post 1919 versions which are very valuble genealogically. You may also order a poor quality photostatic reproduction of the NARA's Compiled Service record from the SCDAH or much better copy from DC with the data and form info already provided. As to his burial place, he died at Green Pond, SC on the Ashepoo River, you will have to locate Green Pond. He will be buried nearby his place of death, I have had good luck using the USGS map site, use the key word gnis and just follow the prompts..One you find the locale, try contacting the local Sons of Confederate Veterna Camp and they may help or do some surfing on Mac Wykoff's website that I enumerated below, to find out where his unit was at the time of Mr. Rhame's death and follow-up from there. Since he died by accidental drowning and not in the midst of the chaos of battle he most likely will be in buried in a nearby church cemetery and the local newspaper or unit history will have a write-up. The State Library of SC will loan out microfilm of the state's newspapers of the era. I'd bet that you'll find him and if so, go visit his grave or cemetery at all costs and pray over his grave, I believe that it will be a rewarding and spiritual thing for you and your family. If you can, go on Confed Memorial day. PLEASE keep me posted. Julian Ginger Hederer wrote: > Julian: > This is indeed my man? 3. Hi ya'll, I just got the message below and I'm hoping that someone on the list, probably nearer Conway than I am, can help this lady. I have no idea who this person she mentions is and haven't actually seen that issue of the IRQ. Thanks ya'll. I'm really hoping someone out there can help her. Dianne Subject: Huge favor...,please? (Lookup) Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 15:55:25 -0500 From: "Dale Colston" <dcolston@npl.org> To: ladydee@erols.com Dear Ms. Moore: Happy Spring to you and yours... I emailed the HCSC a few weeks ago but to date received no response. Your name was included under "Lookups". Recently I received a death certificate for my ggf, William Henry Kelly. He was born in Georgia in 1869 and died in Georgia in 1928. His mother was listed as "Mattie Doziex". I studied the cert carefully, it is DOZIEX, not DOZIER, as was someone's suggestion. In searching rootsweb.com and ancestry.com, I found no listing for DOZIEX. While using altavista.com, I was led to your Horry County site-- someone named Etrulia P. Doziex submitted the "Will of Arthur Alford", in the Vol. 20 Spring 1986 No.2 issue of the Independent Republic Quarterly. Who is (was) Etrulia Doziex? Can I contact this person? Do you or does the HCSC have any info on the surname DOZIEX? Where did that surname orginate? I thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon. Please feel free to pass my query on to others. Feel free to make suggestions as well. Sincerely, Ms. Dale Colston ======================= Dale E. 3. Julian: This is indeed my man? I contacted the NARA and they told me they would not have pension records for confederate soldiers that I would have to contact the state of South Carolina. I was looking over SC web page but could not find any reference on where to write, what information to include, or the amount needed for the search. Could you give me some suggestions? I know he died at Chapman's Fort, accidental drowning in the Ashepoo River, SC. I am wondering where he would have been buried. Is there burial grounds in that area. To tell the truth I don't even know where that area is. Thanks for all your help! 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Vets
    2. Dear Howard: It looks like the same Grainger individuals were also spelled as Granger. According to "Broken Fortunes", page 136, one William Grainger from Horry served in the 1st SCV Inf Regt., Co. F, later converted to heavy Arty died from wounds on 05/131863 in Richmond and is buried in the Confed section of Hollywood Cemetery Section "T", grave 91. See Franklin Grainger below. He is probably reported in "SC Troops" as William GRANGER. T.W. Granger, Co. K, 26th SCV Inf Regt., see Levi and H.J. below as they were probalby bors or cousins. On page 136 of "SC Troops" no George Grainger is cited, see my response to Ruby just posted regarding further research sites. I do have a G. Granger that was a Lt. in a nearby local unit called M. Ward's Co. a.k.a. the Waccamaw Light Arty. which is probably our man if he was from NE SC and/or Horry County. I do know a fair amount about this unit. There are five other Grainger's cited in "SC Troops" that do not appear to "fit" Horry units except Levi Grainger that was a Capt. in 9th Bn Co. G, which was the predecessor unit of the 26th SCV Inf. I have a Levi Granger that become a Capt in the 26th SC Inf Regt. Co. K, which is probalby one and the same as the gentleman form the 9th Bn. I'd say he was probably from the northern part of Horry Co. near Loris. It looks like he survived the War. I have a ton of Grangers from SC and if you want these, then send me a SSAE and a note and I will send the listing from "SC Troops" and "Broken Fortunes" to you ASAP. I do have a Pvt. Franklin Grainger from Horry Co. F, 1st SC V Inf Regt, Co., that was converted to a heavy arty unit, that died of disease in Richmond, VA on 08/02/1862 according to "Broken Fortunes" on page 136, although no Franklin is reported in "SC Troops". Pvt. H.J. Grainger of Co. K, 26th SCV Inf Regt. age 36 died of wounds on 09/09/1863 while in the Confederate Hospital at Lauderdale, MS from wounds he received 07/12-1863 at Jackson, MS. I know a great deal of these circumstances and will be relating them in the website that I am working on for the 26th. He was one of the first of the 26th regt to die with many more to subsequently come. If you have any family stories, letters, diaries, photos, ect. re. Mr. Grainger, I would be very anxious to hear from you directly via my e-mail, as the 26th is my major focus. Help me so that I can really put a human face on this website and your keepsakes can remain with you and never leave your custody. He is cited as H.J. Granger in "SC Troops" on page 189, so he does have a Military Compiled Service Record on file at the National Archives. See me if you need help in ordering any of these or other SC men's Complied Service Records. Again, send me a SSAE along with a reminder note as to what you are requesting and I will drop these lists to you: Julian R. Harper, 10030 East Dewey Robbins Road, Howey-in-the-Hills, FL 34737. There is just too many to provide to you by e-mail. Hope this info helps. 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Vets
    2. PS: I would recommend checking the HCHS website to see if any of these gentlemen are cited there as having received Confed Pensions or contact the SC Dept of Archives and History in Columbia for the respective Counties in which they resides to get their pension data, both pre-1918 and post. They had considerable genealogical value, esp. the pre-1919 aps. It would be my guess that the dob cited for Mr. Hughes is incorrect as he would have been 50 years or more in age at the time of his Confed Service but the upward limit would have been 35-40 max. did he have a son named after him? Unless his birthdate was 1822 or 1832? Julian RCAMP65@aol.com wrote: > Julian & Carol, Thanks for the offer, can you look for, > George Hodges, br. Jan. 1, 1831 of Marlboro S.C. > Larkin F. 1. Re: [SCHORRY-L] SC Confed Vets
    2. Dear Ruby: I have two George Hodges and one G.M. Hodges cited in "SC Troops" on page 228: 1. George, 1st Sgt. 19th Cav Bat, Co "E" 2. George 1st Sgt. 20th Inf Regt Co. L. # 1 and #2 may well be one and the same persons. You will need to order both of their Military Compiled Service Records from the National Archives, Textual Service Branch to straighten them out by comparing places of recruitment and dates of service. Also, contact Mac Wykoff's website at http:/members.tripod.com/mwyckoff/index.html for further info on the respective units as I know nothing of either. 3. Sgt. G.M. Hodges 6th SC Cav, Co. F. No George or G.M Hodges reported in "Broken Fortunes" as having died in the War. Larkin Hughes is reported on page 239 of "SC Troops" as 1st Lt. 2nd Rifles, Co. H. Without further research it looks like Mr. Hughes survived the War. It seems like to me that I have previously looked-up Goodman James either for you or some other SCHORRY member so if it is not you you might want to throw out a query for one of your kin who is also researching him. I do not have a Goodman James but do have a G. James reported on page 249 of "SC Troops" which is our man and he was a member of the 9th Inf Bn, Co. A and its successor unit 26th SC Inf Regt Co "A" which is the unit that my wife's G-Grandfather Asa Garden Causey served with and the subject of my upcoming website. I would be very interested in hearing from unit and sharing info on his service as that is the core unit of my website and I desparately want to put a face on the unit. It is a very under-reported unit which my website will help to rectify, hopefully. Contact me directly without going public on the SCHORRY if you own or know of any personal items, letters, diaries, or collectibles? It looks like Mr. James also survived the War but he was not on the Appomattox surrender list so he was likely captured at the Battle of Five Froks and imprisioned with Mr. Causey at Point Lookout Federal Prison Camp. As soon as I get a microfilm reader I willhave his records at my disposal as I have the service record on microfilm for the entire 26th as well as their "daily" reports logs. Hope that this info helps----Julian RCAMP65@aol.com wrote: > Julian & Carol, Thanks for the offer, can you look for, > George Hodges, br. Jan. 1, 1831 of Marlboro S.C. > Larkin F. Hughes, br.
