He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of the late Carl Bruce Strickland and Alice Faye Johnson Strickland. He was a Veteran of the US Army WW II. He is survived by two sons: Charles "Chuck" M. Helen Anne Bryant Capps, 65, died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. She was born August 6, 1944 in Mullins, SC, a daughter of the late Thomas and Alma Rogers Bryant. Eula V. Cox, 79, wife of the late Elmo "Pete" J. Cox, of Highway 905, died Friday, April 23, 2010 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mrs. Cox was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Joseph R. and Sudie O. Todd Stalvey. She attended Valley Grove Baptist Church in Tennessee and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Conway. While living in Conway, she was employed by AVX. After moving to Tennessee, where she enjoyed spending time, she was employed by Dollywood. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances D. Curry. Mr. Daniel Collins (Carl) Strickland, age 88, of the Cherry Grove Community in Columbus County passed on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, SC. Mr. Strickland was born on September 11, 1921 in the Cherry Grove Community. He was a retired farmer and a Master Barber. He enjoyed coon hunting, viewing nature and loved working in local politics. Dorothy Ann Milligan Martin of Conway answered a call for rest and a better life around 5:20 pm, Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at her home. Dorothy had been trying to recover and rehabilitate from a 120 day hospitalization for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Pneumonia at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She enjoyed spending time at the river and enjoyed the outdoors very much. Dorothy is predeceased by her father, Crosby Gene Milligan and her mother, Nellie JoAnn Martin Milligan of Conway. Dorothy leaves her husband of twenty-seven years and friend and companion of thirty-four years, Milton M. Gail Paul, age 57, went home to be with the Lord Monday, April 19, 2010 at Conway Medical Center following an illness. Mrs. Paul was born January 16, 1953 in Conway a daughter of the late John B. Paul, Jr., and the late Mavis Porter Paul. She enjoyed sewing, planting flowers, and going to the beach with her family. Her family was very important to her and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Paul worked as a bookkeeper with Carolina Fence Inc. and Magnolia Tire and Auto Service. William Steve Hewitt, age 70, of Myrtle Beach, died Sunday April 18, 2010 at home after losing his courageous battle with cancer. He was born on July 28, 1939, the son of the late William Strocie Hewitt and Lurline B. Hewitt. Steve graduated Aynor High School and went on to become the Vice President of Chapin Company in Myrtle Beach before retiring in 2000. Steve was a line judge with the South Carolina High School League for 10 years. Since his retirement he has enjoyed being a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie R. Hewitt, four daughters, Dianne Holladay and husband Larry of Georgetown, Donna Griffith and husband Mike of Gastonia, NC, Darlene Pittman and husband Roy of Houston, Texas, and Dorothy Sherman and husband Jamie of Myrtle Beach. Mrs. Carolyn Holden age 75, wife of the late Harvey Holden of Fairfax Road, passed away Sunday April 18, 2010, at her residence surrounded by her family. Ms. Holden was born August 9, 1934 a daughter of the late Ned and Ida Bell Hatcher Gore. She was a member of Aynor Church of God. Surviving are one son Charlie Holden and his wife Claudia; two daughters; Patricia Holden; Audrey Severy and her husband Rick all of Galivants Ferry, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday April 20, 2010 at Aynor Church of God, with the Rev. Jerry Love and Rev. Jerry Love Jr. officiating, burial will follow in the church cemetery. MURRELLS INLET - John Waldon "Buzz" Darden, III, age 64 of Wachesaw Plantation, passed away Friday, April 16, 2010 at MUSC in Charleston. Mr. Darden was born December 15, 1945 in Conway, SC, a son of the late Hanna Ross Smith Darden and John Waldon Darden, Jr. Mr. Darden was a graduate of Conway High School, a 1969 graduate of the University of SC, a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, and a certified gemologist and appraiser. After graduating from the Gemological Institute of America and the Holland School for Jewelers, among his many accomplishments, he was president of the SC Jewelers Association from 1975-1977 and National Director with Jewelers of America from 1991-1997. Mr. Darden was president of Darden Jewelers in Murrells Inlet, Georgetown, Myrtle Beach and Conway, which his father and mother established in 1940. He was also vice president of Darden Jewelers in Lancaster, SC. Mr. Darden was very civic oriented in his home town of Conway where he was a past commissioner of the Housing Authority, past director of the Conway Chamber of Commerce and many others. One of his greatest accomplishments he felt was his involvement in restoring the Town Clock of Conway. After moving to Murrells Inlet in 1993, he was chairman of the Mt. Gilead Tax Commission for many years. He later moved to Wachesaw Plantation and served on several committees. Working with the Rotary, he found great satisfaction in the CART Program (coins for Alzheimer's Research Trust) and served as district chairman. In March 2010 he was co-chairman for the Rotary Convention held in Myrtle Beach and was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. Buzz was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on the finance committee and recently was chairman of the staff pastor parish committee. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Surviving are; his wife of 39 years, Susan Darden of Murrells Inlet, son, Stuart Darden and his wife Lori of Myrtle Beach, grandson, Tyler Christopher Darden, daughter, Elizabeth Darden of Murrells Inlet, sisters, Carolyn Darden Karn and her husband Marvin of Blenheim, SC and Doris Darden Gunsalus and her husband Martin of Clio, SC. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. B. Mike Alexander, Jr., Rev. Marty Nason and Rev. Harold Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.
