    3. I'm in the U.S. with an interest in the Schofields starting with GeorgeSkolfield (Early spelling) who settled in the Philadelphia area while his brother Thomas settled in Maine, traveling with the Orr family. These brothers left England in the 1700's. I do not yet know where in england they originated but am led to believe they were of English backgroud but may in fact have settled in Ireland prior to leaving for America. Would be glad to hear from all Schofields no matter how they spell their name. ----- Original Message ----- From: robert schofield <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2001 5:40 PM Subject: [SCHOFIELD] Schofield- Scofield -Scholfield - Schoelfield > I would be interested in hearing from other researchers of the names as to swap and share information on the various families in Australia I am working on and to help others with their linage where possible. > > Regards Rob Schofield > > > ==== SCHOFIELD Mailing List ==== > Suggestions for improving the list are most welcome. I am in Washington State, USA. I was born a Schofield My father's family was many generations in the area of Pennsylvania in and around Philadelphia and Valley Forge, Chester County, Pennsyvania. The family tradition is that the first spelling of the name was SKOLFIELD. From here on I will copy from a book I have that relays mcu of what i know of the family since arrival in the USA, prir to the Revolutionary War with England. "Thomas Skolfield, an Englishman, was an officer in King William's army, and took part in the Irish Campaign, 1690, when King James was driven from Ireland. As a reward he was granted a tract of land inthat country. The original Thomas Skolfield had four children: Thomas Skolfield, Jr. George Elizabeth Susan George Skolfield settled in Philadelphia, Penna. Thomas, Jr. and Susan settled in Brunswick, Maine. William Skolfield, son of George Skolfield (who settled in Philadelphia) and Rebecca Davis, served as Lieutenant under Captains Job and Fred Vernon in the Revolutionary War________". There is more here but I'll skip on a bit. "Thomas Skolfield, Jr. received a liberal education at Dublin University, and shortly after graduation, emigrated in 1732 to America with the ORR famil, and taught at a Latin School in Boston. Subsequently, (about 1742) the ORRS removed to Maine, and Skolfield went with them. He married Mary Orr and settled in Brunswick." More beyond this. Some referenced are made as to source of material. It happens that I descend from the original Thomas Skolfield's son George who settled in Pennsylvania. Interestingly, I married a man from Maine and have been fortunate in having been able to return to Brunswick, Maine and visit a museum named Schofield House that was in the family for many years and is today in the same state of "lived in" as when the last resident moved out many years ago. It is open only in summers as there is no heating system. That branch of the family were very prominentin town affairs and as sea captains. A whole other story. The family branch I descend from is gifted in the area of medicine, the arts and eccenticities!!! (But NOT spelling my husband tells me!!) I've had correspondence with a man in Louisiana who has sent me documents showing a connection to the Maine branch of the Skolfields. If any of this is of interest or ties into material of others on the list I'd be most interested in hearing from and sharing with them. Anne, List Admin From: Paul Cunnington <[email protected]> Subject: JOHN SCHOFIELD 1830 - 26 AUG 1866 ===8<==============Original message text=============== I am trying to find any information on my great grandfather, John Schofield, and his family and their antecedants. Available details are: John SCHOFIELD. Born about 1830 (age at death given as 36) in England, probably in or near Liverpool. Emigrated to USA - ship's name, dates/ports of embarkation and disembarkation not known. Occupation: painter. Served in Union Army in Civil War - regiment, rank, dates of service, etc, not known. Believed to have been in process of taking US citizenship at the time he joined the army. Settled in St Louis, Missouri, in or before 1864. Married Jane SHANNON (see below), date & place of wedding not known. Died 26 August 1866 of cholera. Buried 26 August 1866 in Bellefontaine Cemetry, St Louis, Missouri. Jane SHANNON. Born about 1834 (photo marked "Mother aged 8 in c 1842", and age at death given as 31) in England, probably in or near Liverpool. Emigrated to USA some time after (according to family legend) her fiance John Schofield - dates of sailing/landing, ship's name, ports of embarkation and disembarkation not known. Died 12 March 1866 of phthisis. Buried 14 March 1866 Bellefontaine Cemetry, St Louis, Missouri. Their children:. Mary SCHOFIELD. Born about 1858 (according to family legend), place of birth not known. Died about 1920 in England, unmarried. John SCHOFIELD. Born about 1860 (age at death given as 6), place of birth not known. Died 26 August 1866 of cholera. Buried 27 August 1866 in Bellefontaine Cemetry, St Louis, Missouri. Eliza Jane HAYWARD, nee SCHOFIELD. Born 25 January 1865 in St Louis, Missouri (or so it has always been believed by the family - there is no known record). Following the deaths of their parents, Mary and Eliza Jane were sent back - ship's name, dates/ports of embarkation and disembarkation not known - to their maternal grandmother in Cheshire, England. Eliza Jane married Charles Frank HAYWARD on 21 Jan 1896 at St Jude, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. They became - eventually - my maternal grandparents. Eliza Jane died 21 November 1945 in Bristol, England. Maggie SCHOFIELD. Born about November 1865 in (I assume) St Louis, Missouri. Age at death given as 9 months. Died 20 August 1866 of "summer complaint". Buried 21 August 1866 Bellefontaine Cemetry, St Louis, Missouri, in her mother's grave. I should be grateful for any advice on how to track down details of the west-bound voyages of John Snr and Jane with any indications of their origins, and east-bound of Mary and Eliza Jane. Also details of the marriage of John and Jane and of the births of their children. Paul Cunnington ===8<===========End of original message text===========

    3. Posted on: SCHOFIELD Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/s/c/SCHOFIELD/queries/10 Surname: SCHOFIELD ------------------------- I am hoping to find information on the Schofield families that used to live in Gardner, Illinois around 1878-79. My great aunt, Anna Gould, married Willis E. Schofield, son of Joseph who served in 36th IL Volunteers, Company C, during the civil war. Joseph had a brother, William (married to Maria ?) who also lived in that county. At the time, there were other Schofield families living in Gardner, a Henry, a Benjamin, and another William (who married Amanda Haulteman) who moved a short distance away to Plattville, IL in Kendall County. The Joseph and William Schofield we know of, were born in Mossley, England in 1834 and 1836. The Schofields that moved to Kendall County were related to Robert Leach Schofield, a Grundy County Alderman. Other children of Joseph were Mrs. Emma Dee Schofield-Buck and Dr. Herbert S. Schofield of Kankakee, IL. I am hoping to find the connection between these two Schofield families. Thanks for any help.
