Your post on your grandfather is interesting to me. My early Schofields settled in Pa.. They were English but came from Ireland, having received a land grant for service in King William's army. That was in the 1700's. George Skofield settled in Philadelphia. His brother Thomas, who attended University at Dublin first went to Boston then on to Brunswick, Maine. A large mariner group of Skolfield's sprang up around Brunswick. My George was father to William who served in the Revolutionary War for the U.S..(of course!!) So, what I would like to know is if your Irish grandfather traced backed to relatives of George & Thomas. There were other siblings. Susan was a sisster who also came to U.S. and I would have to look up the other brother of whom I know nothing at this point in my research. Oops, I got really excited there and didn't read the message properly. Lucky Kerry. Please accept my apologies Regards Gail
Robert, I am not sure if the reply I sent you from work today actually worked so thought I would let you know I am really interested in getting what you have. I am pretty sure the program allows me to import GED files but to be safe, if you can export to a text file I think I would prefer that. At least I will know what I am doing. I would be pleased to swap any and all information I have with you. Kerry
Robert, I am so excited, this is the first time anyone has ever had the same information as me. I'm sorry to say that I don't have a clue what a GED file is, however I use the software called Family Tree Maker and I am sure it mentions something about converting files to Ged format. I will have to look it up. Does this mean we are related? As a help to new members joining the List I thought the information below on the Archives available at Rootsweb may be useful, and I'd like to suggest you keep it for future reference. Many thanks to George W. Durman of the Virus-Discussion List for the original text and for permitting me to adapt it for use on this List. (PLEASE NOTE: The Threaded Archives are NOT working right now!!!!!) (I'm posting the instructions below, in case you want to use them later when the Archives do become available.) ********************************** >From time to time, as new subscribers join us, I receive questions about the ARCHIVES for these Lists. So, it's time to post instructions and URLs again, so that you can read those ARCHIVES. To start, every email that has ever been posted to a Mailing List is archived at Rootsweb. That means that you may do a search to read any past messages that might be of interest to you. This is especially helpful for new users who might want to know if a certain surname, subject, state, county, etc., has been discussed in the past. Basically, there are TWO different ARCHIVE search engines at Rootsweb: Karen's Archive, AKA Isearch and The Threaded Archives The differences between the two are kind of complicated, and too lengthy to discuss here. My recommendation is that you just try both of them and see which fits your purpose better. (If you wish to search by year, "The Threaded Archives" is the best choice.) There are two ways to do a search on either of these search engines: 1) Go to the Main page for the search and type in the NAME of the List you want to search, in our case, you would type in: SCHOFIELD (For ISearch) http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl (For Threaded Archives) http://archiver.rootsweb.com/search.html 2) Go DIRECTLY to the search for a specific list: (For ISearch) http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=SCHOFIELD-L (For Threaded Archives) http://archiver.rootsweb.com/SCHOFIELD-L If you want to search a List, and don't know the exact name, or don't know if a List actually exists, you can go to the Main page and look through the list of Lists; just find the List you are interested in and click on it: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/list-index.html Some of these ARCHIVES only go back a few months (recently created), while others go back several years. There are tricks to typing in the correct search words or phrases, so be sure to read the tips at each site. If anyone needs to search the ARCHIVES, and has trouble doing so, feel free to send an email back here to the List Owner. Please explain what you were looking for, which URL you used, what selections you made, what search word(s) or phrase(s) you typed in, etc. On another note about the ARCHIVES, please remember that EVERY email to Lists is "archived". That means that if you see an email and reply with "Me Too", "I agree", "I would like a copy", etc., and nothing else, your reply gets archived. Such replies are what I consider to be unnecessary, since they contribute nothing to the Lists, but do take up valuable space at Rootsweb. This is just a gentle "reminder" to you to carefully consider what you send to a List. Is what you're sending something you would like to have permanently archived for eternity? Does your post or reply actually provide anything useful for others? Would it be better to send a post or reply to an INDIVIDUAL, rather than the entire List? If you're criticizing or castigating someone, would you rather it go to the individual, or would you like it permanently archived for all times? These are just some of the things you should consider before sending an original post or a reply. Remember, if you lose your temper and reply hastily, your words are forever etched into the hard drives at Rootsweb, for all the world to read, FOREVER! Hope this helps, any problems with it please mail me at address below or [email protected] -- Cheers, Anne ICQ# 32010967 (nickie) mailto:[email protected] Rootsweb ListOwner: Docwra, Dockery, Garton, Hampson and Schofield still hunting Nichols, Martin, Fletcher, Ford, Chandler
Hi, To repost my interests in case anyone has a link to *my* Schofields... My grandfather's birth certificate says name Joseph William Schofield, d-o-b 20 June 1899 at 25 St Anne's Street, Bury, Lancashire, UK; father's name William Schofield, mother's name Emma Schofield, formerly Lindow. Father's occupation Coach Builder (journeyman). I searched through the Parish Records a few years ago but cannot find the family, and due to living in a remote area of the UK I cannot access the FRC records at this time. I wondered if anyone had come across great-grandpa on their travels or had a link to him in their line? All responses more than welcome. Many thanks. -- Cheers, Anne ICQ# 32010967 (nickie) mailto:[email protected] Rootsweb ListOwner: Docwra, Dockery, Garton, Hampson and Schofield still hunting Nichols, Martin, Fletcher, Ford, Chandler
