hi,responding to your message about Schofields, any info would be helpful, exspecialy his childrens names. thanks for you help.
Hi Katie! My maiden name was Schofield and I was raised in North Canton, Ohio. (Born in Canton.) I'm not terribly good at this genealogy stuff. Mostly my aunt did all the work before she died and I am just trying to keep all the information together until the time when I no longer run kids around all day and can work on it. My files list a brother to a direct line of mine who was Charles Schofield. Only he was born in 1844 in Scioto Co. Ohio. He had an older brother William Schofield born in New York State in 1823. I doubt these are connections for you, but it is possible since the dates are close and William Wilbur could have been named after an uncle. The father of those two was Benjamin Franklin Scofield (yes, no h) born in New York State in 1796. That's as far back as I can go. Keep in mind in your research that the h seems to be optional. I think the general rule of thumb is that the h appeared around the time of the civil war. I've never heard a good explanation why, but no one could pronounce or spell my name properly when I was growing up, I was glad to give it up for something simple like Miller. Benjamin Franklin Scofield's children were all either born in New York, or in Scioto Co. Ohio. This makes me think that it is unlikely that this is a match. My father was born in Athens Co. (also southern Ohio.) He did not come to Akron until the depression era. Since Hubbard is not terribly far from Akron it is not unreasonable to think I may have been related to this family. However, my father's father was an alcoholic and my grandmother divorced him before she moved the kids to Akron. If there were Schofield relations nearby it is unlikely they would have been in contact with them. Good luck on your research. I think it is a wonderful thing to do. It honors the family that built and preserved your property, and gives an interesting history for future owners. Thanks! Connie Miller [email protected] wrote: > Hello! Hello! My name is Katie and we bought property that was owned by Schofields, since it was built. I am trying to piece together their lives, and as much information as I can possibly find out about them. I do have some information that I could share as well, from all the investigation I have already done. Charles Schofield 1856-1914 Annie E. Schofield 1860-1940 Next generation was: William Wilbur Schofield 1887-1956 (Married twice) Ruth G. Schofield 1900-1932 and Kathleen Schofield ??? died around 1980 I do know there was also a sister to William Wilbur, born in 1885, unsure of her death. These individuals were all from Hubbard, Ohio. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Katie
Hi Lynn! I don't have any specific information on Mabel, but my maiden name was Schofield and most of my more recent ancestors (last 100 years or so) were from roughly that part of Ohio. With a first name I may be able to give you some information on her husband. I am searching for a Mabel Wsie Schofield she was born Feb 1875 to George Matthew Wise and Hannah Jane Keyser. All the information I have is that her married name was Schofield. Her family was from Belmont County,Ohio and I am not sure if that is where her husband was from. I would truly appreciate any help or suggestions you may have! Lynn in Calif.
Have some info on Edward Alonzo Schofields father etc. Please get in touch
OK, let me fix myself before I go any further. Anton's father's real name was Kurt Henry Schumacher. Anton Schumacher became Anton Schofeld when he came to be with his sister, Anna Schofeld (who married William Mesenbrink) in Fort Dodge, IA. He then changed his name, like I said, to Schofield around the time WWI broke out.
Hi List, Can I please remind everyone NOT TO POST virus warnings, chain letters etc to the List..? If anyone has a virus concern please e-mail direct to me at the List Owner address and I will check it out. If I consider it important enough for this List then I shall post a warning. Most times this is not needed. Anyone persistently posting virus warnings will have posting privileges to the List suspended and ALL their posts will come to me for approval before being allowed onto the List. Please take this matter seriously, Rootsweb really does not need the archives filling up with virus alerts - please remember this is a Genealogy List NOT a virus list. If you do wish to discuss virus info then I suggest you subscribe to [email protected] Incidentally this is also a useful source of information about those virus currently doing the rounds. Please address any follow-ups to this message direct to me and NOT to the List. Many thanks. -- Cheers, Anne, List Owner - Schofield mailto:[email protected]

Sylvia, That's a funny story. I don't think I have any connection with the Schofield Barracks guy, but if I ever get to Hawaii I'll be careful! As to branches, the first Schofield in our line (that we know of) was Benjamin Franklin Schofield, born in N.Y. in 1796. It's funny, much later (my great great grandfather, born in Ohio) was Andrew Jackson Schofield. I'm not very good at this genealogy stuff. My aunt was the one, I just kept track by putting it all into the computer, and sometimes finding some new leads on the CDroms and things. Before she died I promised to be the keeper of the family history (I was the only one who cared!) And one day I will diligently continue on with her research, but right now I am running a business and raising two kids so it will have to wait until I have a little more leisure time. Hi All, I also have Schofield relations that I've done a little research on that have come from England, and have found that there were a lot of those families from Mossley, Yorkshire (or in that Manchester area). The ones related to my family all seem to have been in Gardner, Grundy County, IL, at one time, but it appears that one branch moved to the Plattville area in Kendall County. Most all are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Morris, IL, even the ones from Plattville, who were removed to there from Lisbon in Kendall County. The line I'm researching descends from Joseph Schofield (civil war veteran). Some others that I'm trying to figure how they fit into that particular family are, Benjamin, Robert Leach, William and Henry Schofield. I'm fairly certain that Joseph and William were brothers. I have a few obituaries, several cemetery cards, censuses and marriage licenses for anyone that's looking for a branch of that family. Rodney Gould
Thanks, Sylvia and Connie. Wish I could find my grandfather. Hoping when the Ellis Island site works better I can find him. I have sat in LDS rooms looking through film ordered from them for 6yrs now. Nothing. All we know is that he truly lived in NJ and fathered 6 children, my Mom one of them. He was killed in NJ and I have the death certificate. But I'll be darned if I can find where in Ireland he came from Judy Judy Corbett Barker St Pete, Florida Researching Newfoundland, Ireland, Channel Islands Http://members.aol.com/judyb3753/index.html
The following is meant to be laughable and not to cast any aspersions; When I left the east coast for college in California it was not long till I had several people snickering over my last name of Schofield. Finally someone explained to me that a large number of illegitimate children born in Hawaii bore the Schofield last name . Reason was that many of these children were sired by soldiers who had been stationed at Schofield Barracks!!! Your mention of the Army and the name brought back that startling experience in my past. So, Connie, which branch of this Schofield family do you come from?? I never cease to be amazed at how large and interesting a family it is. Just had to jump in here with an aside on the spelling of Schofield. My maiden name was Schofield. My father had a cousin who was in WWII. Somehow the army messed up the spelling of his name and left out the h on all his official papers. He figured you can't argue with the U.S. Army and went the rest of his life with no h. Now his son is a Scofield. Connie Miller Sylvia Ellingwood wrote: > The spelling is VERY variable. Many Scofields in Connecticut. Dear Sylvia, I am sorry but I know nothing about him except for birth and death . And even birth record is impossible to find. However, I found a James Schofield on the Arabic sailing from Ireland to New York which would fit his age and when he arrived. He married my grandmother and died before her last baby was born. My Mom is 80 and doesn't even know in which county he was born . I do not think we are connected to the US Schofields who were here very early like yours. Actually, James didn't have an "h" in his name, but my Mom said he may have dropped it. Thanks for your interest. The spelling is VERY variable. Many Scofields in Connecticut. I want to follow a gut feeling I have that the elusive Susan, sister to George and Thomas , may have ended up in Connecticut. There was a Susan in Conn. at the correct time. My research is usually a winter project however so it may be "down the road " a bit till that stone is turned over. Happy hunting.
