Author: Mr_Sugden Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.schofield/357.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In my tree there is the marriage of WIlliam Sugden to Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Scholefield of Batley and his wife Elizabeth Tilson. William was son of Mary Gomersall & William Sugden Yeoman and Clothier of Tyersal Hall near Tong. William's grandparents were Joshua Sugden and Hannah daughter of Thomas Rawson Yeoman of Bolling, a member of a prominent landowning family. I am pretty convinced that the Schofield/Scholefields I am concerned with are probably of Batley Hall. This site has a book about the history of Batley with a pedigree, and Will excerpts, from key members. The book says that the Scholefields of Batley Hall were all descended from a Joshua Scholefield who came from Drhilington in the 1600's. All Scholefields are, according to legend, descended from the Scholfields of Scholefield Hall in Butterworth Lancashire. I can't find a sure connection between the Scholefields of Batley Hall with my Thomas or with the original Lancashire branch. Anybody out there know more? I am trying to location anything on the parents of a John Schofield born in Vermont abt 1835. he is the 3rd great Grandfather of my Husband. Unfortunately his family on his father's side wont talk about the family. I have record of him in the 1840 census around Brandon, Vermont and then then again in 1850 at 17 ish In Franklin, Vermont. I know that he was either married too or just had children with a Betsey Button. However I can not account for his death or birth. Here is a census record that shows him with other Schofield's in Vermont, however they all came in from Canada and I am not sure if anyone is a father or mother, since there is no head of house listed and no children listed either. Man I would love some help from someone. I AM TOTALLY STUCK!!!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jojoones2xu Surnames: schofield Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.schofield/854.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Matthew Thanks for your info. I have a copy of the who's who. He was also awarded an mbe in 1918 for services in connection with the war in his capacity as principal and director or the wirless training college. I think there he was also the principal for one in bournmouth also. He once also played cricket for lancashire and blackpool, I beleive. He was also the director of the Garnant Gas company, and was involved in some kind of shipping where we think he lost all his money. He definitely died in the house you live in and died on 7th January 1927, but was buried in Blackpool. Not bad for someone from Rochdale previously a carpet weaver. I presume he maned the house Marconi, due to the wirless technology of the time. I seem to have in my head that I have seen something saying Marconi manager. However, I may jave dreamt it as I cant find it now. I've never been able to find him on the 1911 census, so don't know if he was in Wales then. Stange thing I came to cardiff over 10 years ago, knowing nothing about my ancestry and stayed on Cathedral Rd. If only I'd have known then. I have found a photo of one of the houses with Marconi on the front, but don't know which one it is. It doesn't show much of the house, but I can post you a copy of it and a photo of the family who used to live or stay in the house. I even think my great aunt may have been born there, but not unearthed this yet. Joanne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: timrudge70 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.schofield/854.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jo. Thanks so much for the reply. Cathedral Road connects with Pencisely Road, but the houses in Pencisely Road were more modern in the 1920s, and had larger gardens. He actually named two different houses 'Marconi' - 240 Cathedral Road, and this house, now number 108 Pencisely Road. How fascinating that JRS's great grand-daughter is researching him. I did wonder if his choice of house name was made not just because (according to 'Who's Who in Wales 1920') he is listed as being Principal of Cardiff and Bristol Wireless College, but that in some way he may have been connected with the eperiments Signor Marconi himself undertook in south wales in the 1890s. Do you know by any chance?? The listing in the Who's Who book is as follows; 'Schofield, James Rimmer.MBE Principal, Cardiff and Bristol Wireless Colleges, b Rochdale Nov 5th 1868, m. 1889 Emily Whitworth, one son, 2 daughters, educated John Bright School Rochdale, Liet-Commander RNVR Treasurer Glamorgan branch Navy league, Founder, Cardiff Naval Brigade, Director, Garnant Shipping Co. Cardiff. Address; Marconi, cathedral Road, Cardiff.' JRS moved to this house in 1920, and is still listed as being here in 1932. Oddly enough, my aunt and uncle lived a few doors away in the 20s, and as there were few houses in the road at that time, you may be fairly sure they knew one another. when did Commander Schofield die? There is a good image of him on the Cardiff sea cadets website, and he looks most imposing. What a distinguished ancestor to have. We have lived in this house for six years and have tried to restore it. Like many Edwardian houses it had suffered during the 1960s and 70s. However, i think JRS would recognise it were he to walk through his front door again. I am delighted to be in touch with a descendant of JRS and you would be a great plesure to welcome you here anytime. We have no old images of the house or garden, and I would be really thrilled to see any. Thanks again for your reply, and any further information on your family's time here would be most interesting. With all good wishes, Matthew. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
