I have recently learned that Henry & Conrad Schnell emigated from Hesse - Kassel Germany/Prussia. We learned this from a librarian at a Museum in Jasper, IN, which had a large chart on the wall showing owners of plots of land (Conrad Schnell and others). It was not until 1806 that there was a state called simply "Isenburg". When the Holy Roman Empire was defeated by Napoleon Bonaparte of France in that year, the empire was abolished and the Confederation of the Rhine was established amongst the various German states. As an incentive to join the Confederation, it was stated that any state which joined could mediatise their neighbours. Prince Charles of Isenburg-Birstein joined the Confederation and was granted the mediatized Isenburgian Countships of Isenburg-Büdingen, Isenburg-Meerholz, Isenburg-Philippseich, and Isenburg-Wächtersbach. His Principality was renamed to Isenburg. The Principality continued under the rule of Prince Charles through the Napoleonic era, but was mediatised by the Congress of Vienna for being too keen an ally of Napoleon Bonaparte. The lands of the principality were divided between the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt and the Electorate of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel). mcr308 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The St. Celestine book has entries for the following historical information (this is off the top of my head): -The Cemetary Map and listing of those buried there from early times. -It shows surnames that arrived in the area and which decade they arrived and where they emmigrated from. -It indicates what records an individual might be listed in (ie census, church records, etc.) -It has a map of who first owned the land in Hall (and one other township) My family felt that it was very well done and mentioned some of the Schnell, Alles, Miller, Hahn, and Leisman ancestors. I can send you the old map that shows the borders of Alt-Isenberg before the Napoleanic era or try to post it here this evening after I get home from work. My knowledge of German geography is very limited. My ancestors probably didn't know they were going to become "german" until well after they left. They were platt-deutsche speaking people who probably considered themselves "deutsche". My father speaks plattdeutsche as his mother tongue though he was born in the USA. My ability to search in german records has been severely constrained by not knowing the town of origin, though I do have some idea of where they departed from en masse to travel with others who took advantage of the land offered in russia. This was about 11 generations ago. Around this time there was a mass exodus from central europe following several ruinous wars that devastated the region and as a result our Schnell ancestors scattered in all directions. I have LOTS of Conrads in my line. There were only a few popular male names in the family tree and they recycled them over and over. Johannes and Heinrich were common also. Author: aaronschnell Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.schnell/195.6.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I cannot confirm the town, but my Schnell Ancestors originated in the Pricipality of Isenberg where they left in the mid to late 1700's to migrate to Russia under Catherine the Great's invitation. Many of the volga deutsche people were from this part of Hesse. As were many of the mercenary Hessian troops that fought in the US revolution - several Schnells included. As it is, Isenberg is now a part of Hesse, and we see that Neu-Isenberg is now a part of Frankfurt. The old Isenberg is to the northeast of Frankfurt and surrounds the town of Giesel. I have an old map that demarks this region saved on another computer and may be able to provide it. I have also heard (but cannot confirm) that Schlitzenhausen was a source of Schnells, which is very close to Giesel. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
