Don't forget that there two ends of the shipping records, the arrival records in America and the departure records in Hamburg. The focus of these two sets of records is different. The German end is more interested in whether or not they've done their National Service, on the run etc etc and as a result is far more interested in the exact place of origin. Furthermore, if they stayed in Hamburg for more than a few days, they would have had to register their presence with the Hamburg Police. These Transients Registers show the full date and place of birth of the people. The records have been microfilmed years ago by the LDS and can be ordered into your local LDS library. https://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=193218&disp=Meldeprotokolle für Fremden 1 &columns=*,0,0 Regards David Western Australia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
