Hi Gillian and List My grandparents were born in Schleswig which was taken over by the Prussians in the 1860s, so when they emigrated to New Zealand they had to say they came from Germany. They married in 1882 in New Zealand and their children were always told they were Danish. They were Peter PETRSEN born c1856, son of Carl Hansen PETERSEN and Ingeborg ANDERSEN or ANDRESEN, who were living in Carlum, SCH, when the 1860 census was taken, and Carl was said to be a carpenter, and Anna Catherina NIELSEN, dau. of Christian NIELSEN and Anna Catherina Petersen KIRKMANN , who came from somewhere around the same area. Christian and Anna Catherina were married at the Lutheran Church in Ensted on 25 Feb. 1855. They were living in Abenraa at the time. Iris from Auckland, New Zealand
